Lag is RUINING your Swing by DESTROYING your Shaft Lean 😱

In today's video, we jump into a controversial subject! LAG and the difference between REAL lag and FAKE lag and how it plays a role in your shaft lean, and if done incorrectly, could be RUINING your golf swing!
Mike Granato and Shaun Webb jump into how to get tour level lag the RIGHT WAY. True to form lag that delivers you a powerful and controlled golf swing.
Most amateurs use, what we refer to as "Fake Lag" that actually DESTROYS Shaft Lean that causes major loss is distance and power.

You two are in the process of undoing about 40 years of swing rabbit holes and I can't thank you enough. Combining your general downswing proper shift concepts with a proper amount of shaft lean for my 59 year old swing speed has allowed me to hit the ball way more solidly with the driver and irons. Thanks again++++

For me the most important Golf instruction video in the Internet. Thank you so much! The lowering of the arms combined with letting go of the "lag" gives me max speed and consistency. I was very inconsistent with my driver and thin with my irons because I was sometimes too fast turning in the DS and because of this I either dragged my driver wide open thru the ball or pulled it right away or with my irons my chest was too open at impact and I wasn't able to reach for the ball. When I understood the (timing/speed) of the turn of the shoulders/chest in relation of the lowering of the arms, straightening of the right arm and getting rid of the LAG as shown in the video, I only had to find the right tempo between the lowering of my arms (as fast as I can) and my upper body rotation. Now my DS is in SYNC and I can swing as fast as I can and I really bomb the driver without holding anything back. And I am 59! Almost everybody, here on the range, suffers from going over the top because of trying to hit the ball with the turn of the body while leaving the arms on top. And I see so many amateurs trying to hold onto all the angles (bend of the right arm and the LAG in the wrist in the DS) which leads to all kind of miss hits and head scratching. There is one famous Ben Hogan video out there where he shows how he starts the DS with hips while holding the angles in wrist and right arm and all I can say to the one's who try this is: GOOD LUCK. You will need it.

That three finger drill is brilliant guys. I just practiced it a bunch and filmed it in slo-mo, and sure enough..perfect lag and shaft lean without trying to create or manufacture anything. I expanded the drill a bit by doing it with three fingers, then adding a fourth finger from each hand and trying to recreate the same feel, then fifth finger etc. Then I filmed that and analyzed it, seeing if I reach the same positions with each added finger. What a great drill! It's a shame so many golf pros lead students down a bad rabbit-hole of hold this and pre-set that. Good lag and shaft lean is the natural consequence of a good fundamental swing.

Very informative and to my knowledge generally unknown and/or misinterpreted. Also by well known well established websites which either favor the one wrist action or the other; hardly any of them show that both directions of the wrist are fundamental to the very phase of the swing they are in. Well done and thank you and keep up the good work. Looking forward! Piet Leguit, the Netherlands

This may be the best video on the subject. You’ve done some before but this is more distilled and highlights the key evidence without requiring the attention span of a lesson. I like watching those longer videos bc they’re such great experience builders but this watches like a succinct master’s thesis. Would love to learn more how this combines with loading and unloading the shaft because the way you presented this is so much clearer and a lot of shaft loading talk is clouded in special terms and elusive feelings.

Gentlemen, I have really been watching and studying your videos intently over the past few months. I have worked on re centering with great success. I also have been working on my ability to get into the right position going into the delivery position, that holy grail of positions you guys talk about with getting the hands in front of that right thigh in the delivery position. That has been more difficult for me to achieve. I know a lot of things go into getting into that position. I, like many amateurs, often have the look of coming into impact and my hands are about the center of my body. It’s better then I have been in the past when I would have my hands even with my right thigh at impact. I would love to see you guys make a video talking about that holy grail and what we need to achieve in order to get there. Anyways, I am having a blast re learning the correct golf swing by watching your videos and I am also on the AMG Academy site. I am hoping for Christmas to maybe treat myself to AMG+ so I can show you my swing and after you have a laugh you can point me in the right direction. 😂 Keep up the good work! Peace.

I am totally sold on letting lag out in that "point 08" seconds. In fact, I used to experiment a lot, and noticed I had a bunch of success when I "let myself cast". But in fact, I wasn't casting, I was releasing properly... I just felt guilty (said tongue in cheek) because I had it SO DRILLED into me that "casting" was bad. ANYWAY.... I struggle w pulled wedges, and pulled irons in general. In your video on pulled irons, Sean stresses getting rear (r for me) shoulder low. I don't disagree. But at the range, I have MORE SUCCESS fixing pulls by focusing on releasing lag in that "point 08 seconds" part of swing. I have LESS CONSISTENT SUCCESS fixing pulls with consciously trying to get r shoulder tucked and turned and low. HMMMM.... I'm thinking that by releasing lag correctly, my body, specifically left shoulder, reacts in the fraction of a second and pulls up .. leading to r shoulder going down. My left shoulder pulls up (not conciously), because if it didn't, with my correct lag release, my club would smack ground 8 or so inches behind ball. If any of this meshes with golf brains a lot bigger than mine (like AMG golf), is there something in here that might inform another comment or video from you guys on iron pulls? Thx for taking time to read. You guys are terrific, and have helped my game so much. R

Great content as always - gotta try that drill! I have a request for a video: please explain what a "flat left wrist" is. When I grip a club, the back of my left hand becomes convex. When my pinkie bone is aligned with my wrist bones (from a down-the-line view), this looks to me like a "flat left wrist." If I freeze that position and look at it from face on, there is a signifiant angle ("cupping") between my index finger bone and wrist bones - the same exact position looks completely different depending on the angle! If my index finger bone is aligned with my wrist from face on, it looks like I'm pretty "bowed" from a down-the-line view. Everybody throws this term around but you guys are all about accuracy and a 3D look at this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Gentlemen, my mind is again blown. I had a light bulb moment when you mentioned that trying to hold lag can actually cause the club to tip out. As my swing improves I was still noticing on video that my club was tipping out, but not coming classically “over the top”. I could not figure out what was going on. However, with my desire to get lag and doing it by trying to hold the angle I think that was what was causing the club to tip out. I will definitely work this drill and continue to lament the fact that I used to read golf magazines relentlessly and all different kinds of instructional books about golf. More then half the stuff I read only served to lock my swing up and helped cause the problems that I am currently trying to get out of my swing. Again, thanks for clearing up swing misconceptions that are floating around out there.

I might be off but I started getting better with this by loosening my grip on the way back, feeling the club head and allowing it to take my wrists with it. In transition after the club naturally sets give a slight split second squeeze and feel the shot loose with pressure really coming out of my trail hand trigger finger. It’s a swing thought of mine I call it loose squeeze loose. Kind of got my rhythm down wit it also

Mike...." shaft lean comes from this ( left hand extensionl) vs that (left hand radial flexion). I have noticed the swing you teach promotes a flat left wrist at the top. Since I have been practicing this, a guy told me in a tournament what great lag I was producing. Also, I used to try to really set the club wide on the backswing only to collapse in at the top. No more! I am also trying to "throw" the club head from the top to dump the angle on down swing as my recenter and hip turn are faster... no more weak fades! Thanks coaches!

Nice graphics! Been missing you guys from long video instruction. This video was just what I needed. I’ve been chasing positions lately, and chasing positions is a death Knell in the swing. I’ve been holding angles in an attempt to maintain club face stability through the hitting zone. However, by holding angles, I’ve had this terrible feeling of getting stuck. My wrists have felt handcuffed on the downswing, like they were in a vice. I needed to be reminded not to hold angles, but to release them, and not to chase positions, because good positions are the result of a dynamic golf swing. Thanks, guys. Glad you’re back! 👊👊

Hi Guys, as always a great and informative video. Could you just clarify an issue on wrist angle and the meaning of ‘flat’. If I hold out my lead arm, my wrist becomes naturally slightly cupped/extended. It only becomes flat if I bow/flex it so that the knuckles are in line with my forearm. My question is when you refer to a ‘flat’ wrist do you mean it’s natural position as when the arm is extended I.e. slightly cupped or is it when the wrist is physically bowed so that the knuckles are in line with the forearm. Thanks

If you are actually trying to release it, you are making it too active. Look at the 2 finger drill 11:00 min in. The club will fall there if you don’t have excessive tension. If that doesn’t sort it out, the it’s probably sequencing. If you want to try something, try on the takeaway or backswing (you might have a chance). On the downswing there can be no try. Happens too fast. Alan

Do you recommend bowing the left wrist and not rotating the forearms for consistent face control? or said another way, do you recommend working toward keeping the clubface outside the hands from DOL view, i.e. pointing clubface more toward the sky for longer through impact? at least for a over hooker of the ball.

This is superb content. Would this concept of "letting the angle out" apply to pitch shots, and even short chip shots? I'm guilty of the old cliche of pulling the handle on those shots, leading to "inconsistency" (that's putting it mildly)!!
@Sreeve94
@Sreeve94 Год назад
Think the more angle you use on pitch shots the more speed you create (and thus spin). But often with those shots you want to focus more on distance control. To do that, you'd want to create and release less lag angle with your hands, and focus more on using your bigger muscles (i.e. body turn) to generate speed. Basically, getting and releasing lag angle with your hands creates a tonne of speed but it's harder to judge it and replicate it the same every time, easier to do that with body turn instead. That's from the short-game chef too
@Murkz21
@Murkz21 Год назад
There was one experiment showed that, physically and biometically, wrist joint (mostly ulnar bone) is the one which controls the range of lag angle, without any musle force (free fall), only arm ratation, the joint does timing and square the club face properly every single time. So in the other words, passive wrist motion with proper grip is the most easy way to control lag and square the club face. Then the club lean angle is controlled by leading shoulder position which acts like anchor point (body rotation and vertical movment), and the grip of cause (stronger grip, less release motion required). Nowadays, most pros keep passive wrist motion, at least during the downswing.

depends....most of the time golfers leave the clubface wide open when they do that drill so it can hurt more than it can help...and the speed happens late instead of at impact

Hey Amg, thanks for the clarification on shaft lean and lag! I've been using the tourstriker planemate and they use those interchangeably. This has helped me big time. As an aside, what are your thoughts on using the tourstriker planemate? I've been enjoying it, and would love to hear your quick opinion on it since I respect y'alls opinion. Keep up the great videos. I recommend them to everyone who enjoys detailed golf instruction.
@AthleticMotionGolf
@AthleticMotionGolf 2 года назад
I like their products but not a huge fan of a training aid doing that work that the golfer needs to do on his own. The plane mate pulls the club in transition (correct me if I’m wrong). So it eliminates the golfer having to do it. I’m sure it helps a lot of people but it’s not something we’ve used to help golfers.
@IAM-xf9ir
@IAM-xf9ir 2 года назад
@@AthleticMotionGolf copy that. I appreciate your opinion. I agree with that principle, and I guess that's why I do their prescribed protocols with the aid on and off so I'm not reliant on it. I think the aid + protocols are helpful in showing me how to keep my swing within the "rails" of a good swing. From there it's on me to take it off and replicate those feelings without it on. Just my 2¢ Again, thank you and I look forward to your next video.

Would you say the higher end 8* of shaft lean as opposed to the 6* is possibly the club being a shade more open, and an optical illusion in itself like the flattened lag angle? (Not so much as more bowing?) ... And perhaps the faster speed is also closing at a slightly faster rpm as well right?

Is creating shaft lean predicated in part by the arms position at the top? In other words, if the angle of right arm bend is greater than 90 degrees, won't the rebound affect from the top make forward shaft lean at impact difficult or not possible?

This may seem far fetched but I also believe some Day in the near future technology will create a teaching aid with a gizmo similar to the Segway I think it uses gimbals or gyros to keep it upright (similar to a flight instrument called attitude indicator) once the gimbal or gyro spins up its rotational forces keep it upright and stable, if they could put one of those in a golf shaft and tune it to stay on a “incline plane” it could be revolutionary for golf teaching …. Next has to be what level of player the measurements were from. If the answer to #1 is "no", you're getting an opinion.
