Open passing (red/fast advanced) group. NCRC said 1'44 and below were fine for this group, so I went for it. Ambient temps hit as high as 91, so I was finally able to test the new cooling. Unfortunately, it failed quite miserably. I was having too much fun in the second session being surrounded by nice cars that I let the oil temps reach almost 300F (not a typo). Power loss and cooldown laps really prevented me from keeping up. Sad face. I'm probably never signing up for the fast open group again until my cooling issues are resolved.
The day's sessions were marred by all sorts of incidents. First session was delayed due to a coolant leak at the end of the previous session. Some homeboy with a death wish got out of his car in the second. Fourth session had a miata get stuck in the gravel at 11. The fifth saw a car die at the bottom of 9, and a radical who slowed to a crawl after 1 because of some miscommunication (I think), which I almost hit. Crazy day, but at least my windshield didn't get a new crack.
Overall, my driving today was way better than the last Laguna day. Despite the car being down on power, I was able to PB by improving my cornering speeds significantly. I'm still doing too much maintenance throttle though. I tell myself it's to balance the car, but in reality I'm just overslowing and being impatient. Regardless, I should be able to get down to the 40s on a cooler day with similar tire conditions.
Next track day will be at Thunderhill West in a couple weeks.
