The way he can make the audience go from “oh, what a cute, funny guy” to “oh, he’s actually fucking unhinged, good for him” in a matter of seconds like we stan a freak.
His entire design is great. His armor is very utilitarian, what seems to be for show is actually extremely relevant later and he added that bell and whistle for that specific scenario, even his plain looks add to character (from omake: He's inherently lazy and unkempt, the second his sister said he looks like a certain someone like that, he religiously shaves and trims his hair now)
I completely agree, idk if it’s because of his attitude, his little monster rants or because half of his fans (including me) are autistic but something about him is just… so true
@@flo_bato For real. He might genuinely be some of the best autism representation out there. Kyoko Kui also just spends so much time on her characters that I know with absolute certainty that him being Like This is not just kind of incidental. In the new Daydream Hour compilation, there's a small comic in which a toddler Laios is being shown his newborn sister for the first time, and his parents are disappointed when he just looks at her and runs off, apparently either too young or simple to actually understand it. Then it shows him going around his household telling all the animals about his new baby sister, and being so happy about it. And that just resonated really deeply with my own experiences. I'm an autistic man, and from since when I was a little kid, animals were always the one thing I could trust and be at ease around. I did the exact same kind of stuff.
@@goblinrat6119 I know exactly what you’re talking about. Especially in the manga, I always related so much with his behaviour and just the way he talks about his interests. I,m very happy the anime is getting more popular since more can see the way he was amazingly written. It’s amazing how a character has the power to make people from all around the world who just happen to have autism all gather around and adopt him as one of them aha. All of the characters in the manga are just wonderfully written, it’s one of it’s best qualities.
dude as a kid i used to be super obsessed with fantastical creatures and fairies and this manga completely revived that interest. i think i was just as excited as Laios about all the monsters in the dungeon. hes just like me frfr
I love animals and monsters, I can’t read the room and poor social skills, i love learning something to the point of obsession, i am dense Most of all, i went to therapy and learnt im neuro-divergent like this numpty Im a Laios and I like Laios
I love Laios and how his autism is actually integral to the plot and character relationships in positive, negative, and funny ways ALL AT ONCE. Makes me feel seen.
God _especially_ that relationship part (certain Easterner lol). It's also legitimately cute that it's because of him that his sister is extremely kind and considerate-- She knows that he isn't the best at communication or social cues so she speaks for him sometimes. That pretty much broadens her understanding of how others might work, and thus broaden her empathy towards others.
laios is the most doglike man i have ever seen and i don't mean in the cute and stupid way i mean when they're being really frustrating and avidly refusing to give you what they have in their mouth or stop playing with the cat that is actively trying to tear their eyes out. i do also mean it in the cute way but moreso "Awwww fucked up and weird beast"
01:02 Funny how Senshi, who has demonstrated extreme competence in living in the dungeon for 10 years at this point, and basically cooked eaten more monsters than anyone else, even has doubts and suspicion over what Laios is about to do.
I think it's _because_ Senshi has extreme competence and experience that he's doubting what Laios is about to do. for real, Laios does some pretty inadvisable stuff in the name of investigation. like... he'd only hide that he was eating raw meat _because_ he knew that their food safety guy would tell him not to. he knew... he knew...
To be fair, they literally *just* discovered Living Armor were actually a type of Mollusk that used Armor as a Shell, so it's new ground for Senshi, too
senshi’s character is all about practicality and safety. He doesn’t tend to take risks. When Senshi tries something new, it’s usually because he has understands enough about the topic that he is reasonably sure it will be safe. The episode with the kelpie is sort of the demonstrator for this character trait. When it came to a new situation he couldn’t accurately understand the risks so he defaulted to the one he had more experience with (trusting the kelpie) over the one he had zero experience with (marcielle’s magic) and when that goes terribly he learns to lean on the experience of people he trusts. Laios is a much riskier person. He isn’t afraid of getting hurt or sick to try something new and see if there’s a something of value to a new experience. This outlook is way more reasonable as a person who is used to working in a party. If laios takes too big of a risk, he had healers and people to resurrect him. Senshi’s lifestyle meant that big risks were inherently much more consequential.
@@user-ow1bc4sx2rI love that take on the whole situation, and that part at the end about Senshi not taking big risks and Laios being used to being in a party sounded super spot on
Yknow aside from this quirk Laios is still one hell of a leader and a great asset to the team cause of all his knowledge, I like how that breaks so evenly
@@kennethsatria6607 in the end, even when compared to skilled people like Kabru, laios still wins in the dungeon because of his extensive monster knowledge
@@kennethsatria6607 Laios is so fucking smart/Laios is so fucking stupid is a perfect quantum state that may end up collapsing on either side at any moment.
my favorite trope about humans in fantasy is that we’re so fucking weird, we’ll literally try to eat everything. if it can fit in a humans mouth they’ll try to eat it, if it can’t they’ll find a way to cut it up so it fits. If it’s poisonous or harmful we’ll try to make it less so. my absolute favorite human representation is on a space station 13 server i can’t recall the name of where you gain a trait as a human character that lets you swallow small objects. The himbo in the vid is peak human representation.
Honestly, judging by how Kui likes couching her analogies instead of outright saying anything, Laois was more than likely had his autism cooked into his character from the start.
After reading the manga, i had to stop and reflect upon how much of a freakazoid Laios. I mean, it is beyond what i could imagine, bro is a certified weirdo.
end of manga spoilers: Kabru: You turned into a monster to defeat the demon, right? That was the plan all along? Laios: ... Kabru: Ok, wait, don't answer that actually.
@@TerminalConcretYes that was ultimately the case. He wrote in his journal concerning his ultimate monster that it can eat desires. He outsmarted the demon in the end.
"Average adventuring party is at least 1/3rd autistic" factoid actualy just statistical error. Average adventuring party has 0 autistics. *Autismo Touden*, who lives in the dungeon and eats 10000 monsters each day, is an outlier and shoudl not have been counted.
Laois is hilarious and awesome - he genuinely wants to save his sister and won’t stop at nothing to do - but also simultaneously uses said quest snd financial circumstances as an excuse to finally give into his intrusive thoughts (eating monsters). I think what’s funnier is that a lot of the time this passion not only drives the plot but also helps the gang get out of desperate situations (ie. The living armour).
to have a main character with an autism trait is an interesting choice tbh. and literally this whole manga/anime feels so fresh to me an autistic white guy who’s hungry for monster foods a female elf who’s not sexualized a tiny guy who’s 30yo and has 2 kids and a grandpa whose job is cooking
at the start senshi is seen as a weird hermit type chraactee but he kinda is the least weird of the group lol. Alright, maybe chilchuk is a bit more realistic but still
I went from being founder of my high schools anime club to not being about to stand the stuff, I watch maybe twenty six episodes of anime a year a this point. Most volume 1 manga I borrow I don’t bother finishing. I absolutely devoured the delicious dungeon manga and it’s because the cast was so refreshing. The script would make a solid comedy no matter what format it was in.
I love how the moment someone who's willing to indulge his special interest without judgement shows up, Laois' mask cracks. His friendship with Senshi is so precious.
i think what i most appreciate about this show is how everyone is just kinda....a bit unhinged in their own way. Liaos is over here with his monster hyperfixation and i swear he missed his calling as a bioligist lmao. but i love this freaky monster obsessed himbo
0:04 Subtle Blushing Literally a second later: “Our pretty Elf mage is being attacked by a monster!” Any other MC “I’ll defend her! I’ll draw my sword and my armor can take the hits!” Laios: “Spread your arms and legs to look bigger” “Make loud noises to threaten them” “That’s enough to keep them from rushing you immediately” Proceeds to do an insane intimidation dance with a monster. Laios is just lucky he was born as a tall man with a build that lets him follow his curiosity and obsession.
I mean Marcille ain't exactly a half-foot (for now...), she could reasonably scare an animal by making herself look bigger and being very loud. She just doesn't know about the black bear technique.
2:06 this would be extremely unnerving. Your in a dark dungeon, monsters trying to kill you all around, the water below you being no esception. And suddenly you hear thing singing, not sure whether they’re friend or foe. And then this doofus removes all the tension in the best way possible. For all his craziness its hard to deny his capabilities as a leader. Even if his methods are… unorthodox
I think Marcille is by far the best character in this series, which is not something inherently positive or negative. Hunter x Hunter for example, remains the best shonen ever written and Killua is more popular than the main character. I think when the story provides multiple great characters, that is a sign of great writing. YuYu Hakusho used to be like this, Full Metal Alchemist, etc.. when people vote for the protagonist by default, like what is happening with One Piece for example (the series devolved into a generic "chosen one" plot), that is a sign of weak writing in my pov
“Laios” 🙂👍 “Laios when he’s being silly” 🥰👌👌👌 “Laios when he’s bleeding and dying” 😵💫💗💞👌😤🙏💞 “Laios when he gets crazy eyes” 😳🥵🫠💞💖💖👁️🫦👁️🥰🫠😩👌👌👌🥰😵💫😇🙏💗💗💗
To be fair venom and poison is different. Poisonous animal require you to eat or bite into them for the poison to start acting. Venomous animals have to actively bite you, so it makes sense why he said that.
It's quite rare to find an animal which layers poison on top of venom on top of armor. Mostly because at that point you are wasting energy on more defenses than are necessary to defend yourself and therefore are lowering your own survival rate.
@@georgyekimov4577 he literally had to sneak cuz he knew someone would stop him... because it's a bad idea. the impulse control was just not there in that moment.
This is a great compilation but you left out my favorite 😔 the scene where Laois is asking Marcille if being tied up by the man-eating plant felt good and she just has this look of disgust
Can't wait for more episodes to come out so y'all can see more of his freak behaviour. Also i find the siren scene hilarious bc the va is clearly able to sing well, and is singing better than someone who actually sucks at singing despite his efforts to sound terrible
i'm sorry but İ can't in good conscience accept that Laios is autistic. The community needs to consider that the reality is much worse than we thought: everyone in that party is autistic af. Chil is the rigid hyperfixating kind. He doesn't get out of his comfort zone and can't handle interference in his work, and he has a lot of trouble opening himself and expressing his emotions. Marcille is the "I won't try anything new". She's extremely rigid in what she considers acceptable, and that adversion takes over her communication and doesn't allow her to express how she feels. Senshi... Do I need to say anything about him? We've seen him have breakdowns over magic, water, bread. We've seen him rocking in his seat like an autoregulating goblin. His blank expression. His inability to express affection through anything but food. İ mean, if you asked me who has the tisms, I would say all of them. I'm a Senshi flavour autist. Tag yourself.
@@derpiedoxie eldritch horror? Keeping a little bit of absurdism in our lives? It's an illusion like tall Laios? Discordianism? Honestly l just do it İn case someone finds it. Congratulations, you've seen it, your mortal soul is now forfeit (your immortal one is fine until you find the slightly taller uppercase "I" don't worry).
As an autistic blond man, I can relate to him a lot. Especially when he decided to sing without anyone's approval) Hopefully, my hyperfixations don't include eating every strange creature I encounter...
@@HazeEmry Ha-ha, really random. I'm not a fan of seafood. Some is good, when cooked correctly, of course. But molluscs are a no-go for me - their texture is so weird and unpleasant. It grosses me out.
Technically, they're venomous, not poisonous. And venomous things don't (usually) hurt you if you eat them, unless you maybe have a cut in your insides.
me, looking at cyno and laios "i think i have a type" i cant excuse him eating a fckign raw worm tho wth was he THINKING WHY HE HAD A COOKED ONE RIGHT NEXT TO HIM
@@backgroundartist1879as a matter of fact Laios is either the first or second smartest. Why? Because spoilers He thought in advance on what monster to create to transform into to defeat the lion without coming off as suspicious and is actually genuine because the lion can read your mind
Honestly he seems like the most normal person in any cartoon that there has ever been. I don't think I've ever related to an anime character *more* haha
FINALLY someone else sees it. Tall blonde man in armor with a specific haircut who hangs out with elves and is probably autistic. He also has a fraught relationship with his dad.
Not gonna lie he is so far the best boi for me this season. Cute, bubbly, freaky, smart, knowledgeable, ditzy, most of the time just straight up crazy but most of all I like him because he is blonde has golden eyes and is a lovable bear. Most of my favorite anime characters have blonde hair and golden eyes
