Lake Ballard, an unexpected desert island paradise! Recent rains in the Menzies area resulted in water over Lake Ballard. Add the Seven Sisters Islands to this picture and you have a scene that looks like any oceanic archipelago.
As we walked down to Lake Ballard, the first thing that greeted us wasn't the sculptures, it was the large ironstone island, which is approx 40mts high and dominates the salty landscape. There are 7 islands in total on the surface of Lake Ballard and these have spiritual dreamtime significance to the Wangkatha people. This dreamtime is known as the Seven Sisters Dreaming.
In the words of Wangkatha elder, Paddy Walker “that island right in front of us, the largest of the islands, that is the oldest of the sisters. The other islands, heading out there, up the lake, are the other sisters, the younger ones…”
The second thing that caught our eye was the peaceful, soft colorful palette nature had spread across Lake Ballard; golds, blues, pinks, purples, greens, even muddy browns and the shimmer of the water. A true feast for the eyes no matter which direction we turned. Lake Ballard was also sprinkled with footprints of emus and wallabies/kangaroos which created interesting patterns over the lake.
Venturing further onto the lake the first few sculptures came into view. There are 51 sculptures in total and they're spaced 500 mts apart over the western end of Lake Ballard. With the recent rains in the Menzies area, although parts of Lake Ballard looked dry, the surface became soft and slippery in areas making it unpredictable to do the walk while we were there.
Lake Ballard is on the traditional lands of Wangkatha people (Wongathu)
