Millar Lakes are two claypans you come across approx 100 kms north east of Yeo Homestead as you continue on your travels along Hann's Track. A few kilometers north east of Millar Range, Hann's Track passes through a claypan and splits it into two, one larger than the other. Little Millar Claypan is the smaller of the two, is often full of fresh water from seasonal rains. The freshwater appears pink due to the clay sediment at the bottom of the claypan. The larger of the two is known as Millar Lake and is just south of Little Millar Claypan.
Water, whether in a salt lake or freshwater claypan brings the landscape to life. Vegetation springs up along salt lakes and claypans giving life to animals in the region. Migratory water birds take refuge on these freshwater claypans as they rest before continuing on their way.
Research suggests Millar Range, Millar Lake and Little Millar Claypan were re-named after Mr E. C. Millar who was a member of the syndicate that financed Frank Hann on his 1903 expedition out this way.
We were fortunate enough to pass the Millar Lakes whilst they were both filled with water. These lakes don't fill with water that often.
