i used to live up there, my wife was born and raised there. We've quite a few stories about that lake. here's just 1: my wife was 6, she was on a picnic at Lake Champlain. She walked out onto a dock and looked in the water. As she turned to leave she heard a noise behind her. Turning she saw two small black webbed hands at the end of the dock. As she watched a small black head appeared. At this point she screamed and ran to her family on the beach. Much later she recalled her father relating the story to a group of fishing buddies. Some laughed but others had similar stories. her best description of it is that it was similar in appearance to the creature in the movie "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" but smaller, child size. To this day, she's 68 now, she will not go into a lake for a dip.

Regarding the agricultural runoff, perhaps whatever authorities govern Lake Champlain might want to look into how Ontario, Canada's Tiny Township handles its agricultural runoff. There are a lot of farms on the Penetanguishene Peninsula in the Township at the south end of Lake Huron's colossal Georgian Bay, but I've never heard of any issues with algae. Both Tiny Township and the Town of Wasaga Beach immediately to the southwest are wildly popular tourist spots due to their beach areas and are jam-packed in the summer. Wasaga Beach is actually the world's longest freshwater beach, so it's important for it to be clean for tourism / marketing reasons. It might be worth looking into so Lake Champlain can heal.

Truly an amazing body of water, absolutely historic. While lacking in size compared to the "Big 5" Lake Champlain is more historically significant for sure. The battles for freedom of this nation were fought on its waters, many suggest this lake is really where the U.S. Navy's beginnings are rooted. Lots of men died in and around its waters in battle. From naval battles, strategic historic forts that line the west coast shoreline, the former strategic air command base up in Plattsburgh, and the soon to be Burlington VT based F-35 fighter wing the Champlain Valley remains a crucial link in defense of our great nation. While commercial shipping barges have declined recreational boating, and the all important ferry services are a huge part of the maritime economy.

Sewage dumping: Burlington: twice right into the lake... crickets
@bigriver2000
@bigriver2000 3 года назад
It's insane to think that raw sewage is going into the lake today given the environmental laws. As for the farmers, they have to do their part as well. There needs to be filtration, no matter what the pollutants are, and in some cases it's as simple as passing a law saying that vegetation along the banks can not be disturbed for X-Number of feet from the shore. Road salt in the winter also plays hazard with fresh water. Water, as in fresh clean water is our life line, and without it there is no future for humanity.

living on the lake for a year and coming up since 10 years old its sad to hear an algae bloom is coming and this is also happening in smaller lakes too. Such as mirror lake, Lake Placid. My biology teacher taught me this and now I feel concerned on what may happen to this lake over time. Hoping less fertilizers are going to be used in Vermont and New York to keep this lake the way its meant to be kept.

Samuel De Champlain founded my area in Central Ontario. We have a statue of him (or did as it was taken down to be restored and then issues have arose over it and the depiction of natives at his feet by our local Rez just across the water, about 1.5km straight across the lake) at our local city park.There is also a French Catholic public school bearing the name and I also work at a hotel called the Champlain that has been in our city since 1932. It's crazy how much this man did discover here in the northeast of America and Canada. Finally I must also say that you are butchering the "De" it sounds more like "duh" . As well, the Champlain is pronounced Sham-pl'anne', the 'i' is not pronounced as it is french. However we pronounce Champlain the same English way as you do, Lol. Great video! Filled with lots of interesting facts and information of the lake. Very, very good video!!

I wish scientists would stop wasting their time in Loch Ness, & start devoting real efforts to the exploration of lake champlain. Something in lake champlain has been caught echo locating multiple times, in multiple locations. As far as science has determined, no fresh water species of fish has the ability to echo locate. There's clearly some large species unknown to modern science or out of its normal ecosystem living in lake champlain. This ancient body of water needs to be thoroughly & transparently explored by the scientific community. There's something special in that lake.
