Fly fishing for trout at Otter tarn (Bigland) in the Lake district. This is my first fly fishing trip in ages, and it ended up being much more successful than i thought it was going to be. I even ended up catching a rare fish i've been after for a long time. This is a species i've travelled quite a long way a few times to try and catch, but never made it so I was over the moon when one surprised me today.
If you enjoyed this video please don't forget to like and subscribe, it really helps the channel!
Remember, you can all get 10% off rigged and ready travel rods with discount code AFUK10 available from riggedandready...
As always, thanks for watching and i'll see you for the next video!

Gorgeous water, agree with the comment about the rod tip. Your casting looks better than you think it it's, try only a couple of false casts you will get maximum distance with a smooth release on the 2nd or 3rd cast.

Do you just do ponds/lakes ? I used to fish the little streams of North Wales for Brownies. The best time was to wait for a down pour where the river would turn brown and rough. We would use worm because when the river is brown it means worms etc would be washed into the rivers and that's what trout would be sniffing out. A single hook with a few lead shot about 8-10 inches away and cast into the current and let it drift down the pool. In the summer, if you try and find some road kill or something, you tie it across the river and let maggots and nature do its job, you then go to where you tied the road kill a few weeks later and use maggot as bait, the fish will be hanging around the road kill because of all the maggot dropping off into the water.
@adventurefishinguk
@adventurefishinguk 2 года назад
I fish everywhere mate all over! Interesting idea with the roadkill, I can see that working really well actually. Not sure I’d have the stomach for it though or know a suitable place to try it 😂 lures more my sort of thing in general!

I watched a fly fishing program in the rockies and their were some huge rainbow trout in this crystal clear blue mountain lake but I felt really bad for these guys cuz one had a cold bit wasn't missing the trip and cuz they were out there 5 days his m8 caught the cold aswell but the worst thing for them was the altitude going from 2,000 feet to 8,000 feet making their colds seem awful I imagine, anyway they fished a stream on the way back down and caught either green back cut throat trout or green back Brook trout, either way they were thought to be extinct but thankfully someone found a pocket of them and they've been bred and reintroduced to other rivers they once called home. This is one reason I love fishing programs like that one and this is because you explain what you're doing every episode and I always get a bit of new information, I always tell a m8 who I'm teaching to fish that it's a constant learning curve with new methods coming out all the time and when I started fishing I only had John Wilson on a Sunday night for my education and my grandad cuz their way nowhere near an Internet in 85 when my grandad Started teaching me god rest him, he was a great man taught me alot and my dad said him looking after me in summer holidays was the highlight of the year cuz he'd take me foraging fishing walking etc only dad we didn't go out was in pissin rain. Are you see taught or were you lucky enough to have a friend or relative who educated you?

Now this is my type of video and my kinda fishing. Absolutely superb, mate. Lovely size some of them and that spartic was a beast. Not much wrong with that cast at all, Mate. You’re getting distance and you’re catching fish so that’s alls that matters. We can always tweak our cast to make it look nicer on the eye and present the fly more delicately as it lands on the water but at the end of the day, you’re catching so if something isn’t broke, don’t fix it. I’ve just got back from a days fly fishing myself and the apps bloodworm knocked them daft. Anything squirmy and they can’t help themselves. Nice to see you using the naturals as well. The Montana is a must in any fly box. That reel you’re using is a cracker and the rod to match its is one of the best on the market in my opinion, I’d have a pair of them if they weren’t bright blue and Orange in colour 😂 a little to garish for me. I’d love to give that fishery a go myself. Looks class. Nice and big and a gorgeous settings. After seeing that Montana take, I bet straight line buzzer fishing is unbelievable there. Really enjoyed this vid, mate. More of this please 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Headed to the river after my first wild trout on the fly the other day so you’ve got that video to look forward to! Not going to pretend I know what straight line buzzer fishing is 😂 was a great take though! I have a couple of those worms in my box, not had a go with them yet though. I do love a Montana! Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍
@CBCB78
@CBCB78 2 года назад
@@adventurefishinguk straight line buzzer fishing is using 2 or 3 small flys, on a floating line, letting them drift in the wind. A buzzer is an imitation of a stage of the fly before it hatches. It’s barely even a fly. It’s a hook with cotton round it basically. Buy yourself some, you’ll love it. You watch the top of the floating line as if it were and indicator and it is shoots off and straightens, a fish has hit the buzzer. Some of the takes are brutal. It’s such good fun. Check out MD fly fishing vids or Rhys Fishes and he teaches you how to do it. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Previous comment also said they'd never heard of sparctic trout and I hadnt b4 today and I thought I knew all the trout species we had in UK waters as their aunt that many unless someone has started introducing cut throat trout and other such fish?? Great video what an awesome session m8 , I intend to get a day ticket or a week licence and fish my local resivior as I was learning to fly fish in my local river because it was fly or lures only but they changed the rules so you can use anything except live bait, I do prefer sitting in my favourite spot with my centerpin and 11ft carp rod drowning worms 🪱, would wild brown trout take shrimp 🍤?? I was thinking I know a great spot to scoop a load down on the local beach if trout will take em and if not I can always walk 5 minutes and fish off the pier, the beauty of the isle of man is your never more than a 30 minute drive anywhere on the island pretty much and so many people don't treat this beautiful island, the amount of times traffic cones appear in the river and plastic bottles is disgusting and the one I h8 most is people who bag their dog shite and throw it in the bushes 20ft away from a bin!! So disrespectful 😒
@adventurefishinguk

Horrible to hear about all the litter, it's disgusting people treat nature like that. And yes the spartic trout are really cool, a none native cross between a brook trout and an arctic char I believe. Not wild but still a really cool fish to catch!

@adventurefishinguk 2 года назад
Hi Allan, using 8lb Drennan sub surface leader at the moment. 0.28mm I believe! I’ve been told this is on the heavy side, but better to be too heavy than too light when I’m learning!
@allan8515
@allan8515 2 года назад
Hi thanks for the reply.. I think the leader/ tippet material your using is a monofilament line at about £5 a 50m spool .. I only use fluorocarbon line these days it sinks quickly and is very durable, if you go for a brand like airflo g3 sight free an 8lb line is only .21mm significantly thinner and will improve catch rate. The downside is that is costs nearly 3x the price (I'm not sponsored by airflo) Wychwood also do a good fluorocarbon but there is a big choice out there.. all that said you seem to be doing pretty well without my advice. Maybe it's the green colour of your line. Enjoy your fly-fishing

Your fly-casting is pretty much there. Everyone tends to push their casting hand forward on the forward cast to some extent. The more experienced and expert fly-casters reduce it down to a minimum. Aim to keep the hand in a fixed position when you put the power into the forward flick, just like you keep the butt end of a spinning rod fixed when casting out. Keep the power transfer to a well-defined arc (eg from 10 to 12, or 11 to 1).
@paulmckearney4945
@paulmckearney4945 2 года назад
Of course, I meant your elbow stays at a fixed point on the forward flycast so you don't push the rod forward (that wastes power).
