In this video, Fulling Mill Signature Tyer Howard Croston walks us through his most used methods for small stillwater fly fishing. These are the three main tactics he employs if he doesn't know a small stillwater and wants to enjoy his day of fishing, or to get an idea of how it will fish. As he's often fishing completely new bodies of water in competitions, these are tactics that have proven themselves time and time again.
This video is broken into three parts: pulling lures, nymph fishing, and dry fly fishing. All three tactics have their time and place on small stillwaters, and Howard goes over when and why to use each. If you're a stillwater angler, or want to become one, you absolutely don't want to miss this #troutfishing #stillwater #lakefishing

I absolutely love these Howard Croston videos, I will watch this one several times over and over again. I have every Howard video that I can find on my RU-vid playlist and I play it when I’m driving to go fishing, mainly the Stillwater videos for when I’m going Stillwater fishing. There are some great little nuggets of information that Howard mentions and I catch a few more trout from them. I’ve purchased Howard’s drop back bungs and flies that go with them. The indicator he’s designed with the certain weighted flies are catching me more trout on the lakes and ponds. Thanks a ton for the video, I appreciate it!!!!!

I’ve done a lot of research and watching of videos to improve my fly fishing abilities. This long form tutorial style taught me more than a bundle of shorter videos. Thank you !!

I really like this video because it is similar to the course fishing videos by Preston innovations and MATRIX fishing, which I'm a big fan of. Please make more fly fishing videos like this. 😁👍

Designed and tied a dry fly that virtually never sinks, also a leader system that always sink leaving nothing on the top .These two catches me hundreds of fish every year and a quick strip if the fly does sinks also catches many fish. Love dry fly fishing.

Great session and very informative Howard. Too true regarding fish feeding and not feeling at hand. I’ve been marking my lines for years. It just you that lead in on a take that you’d otherwise miss. Thank you

Dear Howard, I really enjoy watching your videos. I am fishing for more than 45 years now and there is still a lot to learn. What are your favourite knots when fishing lures, buzzers, nymphs and dries? I like to use a non-slip-mono-knot for lures and nymphs when fished with one fly only, for buzzers and dries the improved clinch knot. For very small flies like midges I use either a clinch or a davy knot. Best regards from Bavaria!

Feel like I've just had a guided session. Camera work, editing and Howard's extremely helpful commentary has been extremely helpful. Hope much of it transfers well to here in Victoria, Australia! Thanks very much!

Great video I love these tips and tricks from the master just wish it came sooner in the year, on the nymph leader what distance would you use between files ? Also is there any chance of a video tutorial on how to tie the trigger db pretty please 🙏 if not more of these type videos would be great . thank you to Howard and filling mill

We recommend 3-4 feet apart for the nymph setup. We'll add a trigger DB video to the list for this coming year!

Excellent thoroughly enjoyed that on this cold November afternoon. Trouble is I’ve got 4 1/2 months to wait now. I notice you don’t play a fish off the reel which I always try to do, and the difference is?? Thanks again John from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Hi John , I rarely play fish from the reel to be honest , I find you can react a lot quicker and more smoothly when playing a fish by hand. I do use the reel in the Salt or when Salmon fishing .
