Following on from our walk of Blencathra ( • Lake District Walks | ... ), Neil returns to Mousthwaite Comb to visit Souther Fell, in the north east of the English Lake District. This fell is supposedly haunted by a ghost army, which has been seen by various witnesses on numerous midsummer's days, but will he have a sighting?!

A note on the pronunciation: in this video, Neil goes with "Sooter" Fell, because that's what several guides, and online commentators ,say ("Sue-ter" to rhyme with "hooter"). As a Cumbrian viewer with local farming friends has pointed out, though, it should be pronounced "Sow-ter," which certainly makes sense with the name itself, which seems to have been "Souterfel" or "Souterfell" until at least 1783, when "The County of Cumberland Surveyed" by T. Donald was published, and it became "Souther Fell."
However you pronounce it (and bearing in mind, there's the linguistic minefield of Mungrisedale just round the corner), it's a great little fell, and well worth an expedition! Enjoy!
