My friend Jonathan returns for some more rocks. We found lots and even had a chance to get a few slabbed and one polished for the video. A big thanks to Jonathan for the drone shots and pictures of some the rocks he slabbed.

Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

I just remembered a few years ago I was there in mid Oct and the restroom were still open. Lucky for me because the waves were really rolling in and I lost my balance and fell in on my knees. Before I could get up the next wave completely knocked me over and I was drenched from head to toe. Fortunately my wife had enough smarts to bring a complete change of clothes and I changed in the restroom there. On the way home we got rear ended by a driver that left the scene.

Have question about Johnathon's banded chert that was iron stained. Would that iron stain come off w/ polishing? Some really nice slabs came the banded iron formation. Spectacular shine on the horned coral. Really nice job, Rob. Enjoyed this vid. Hello to Nancy and Sam.
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks Год назад
I can answer very confidently that it would. Sam and I have tumbled quite a bit of banded chert and it almost always ends up gray no matter what color it started out. In this case, since Jonathan slabbed that rock, you can see exactly what color the inside is. You can see how deep the iron goes too. It's not very deep at all.
@jonathanyoung7785
@jonathanyoung7785 Год назад
Anytime you see that rust color on the outside of a rock there is a decent chance that it's only on the surface. In the case of banded chert, we knew it was only on the outside since banded chert is never that color (as far as I know).

Love pretty stripey rocks. I just did a cool rock hunt on a lake in New Zealand, it's actually a Supervolcano. Do you find volcanic stones in any of your hunts???
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks Год назад
If by volcanic, you mean igneous rocks, then yes. A lot of the rocks here are igneous.

I simply love your videos. Thank you very much! I live in Maryland and would like to drive up your way in search of petosky stones and yuperlites . I was wondering if you could let me know of the farthest place south east that I could visit as a first trip. Is there such a place you know of that is nearest MD that we should visit? Rock hunting in your area is on my bucket list. Many thx for all of the inspiration!
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks Год назад
The farthest south east in Michigan that I have hunted rocks is in Port Huron. There are good rocks there, but there are LOTS of people hunting them, so you're not likely to find much. Here are a couple videos, both in the off season. The sound is really messed up on the second one. I'm not recommending these beaches at all, just answering your question the best I could. If you're going to drive that far, I'd go up to the U.P. and hunt Lake Superior. It's farther, but you'll find better rocks and the beaches will be much less crowded. I've been waiting my whole life to go rock hunting in michigan. But when I googled it, it said I have to have a permit to rock hunt on lake michigan. Is this true? If so, where can I get it?
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 11 месяцев назад
No, that's not true. You can legally hunt rocks on the shores of the Great Lakes in Michigan. The beaches on inland lakes are private, but the Great Lakes beaches are public. There is a 25 pound per year per person limit, and you can't hunt rocks on National Lakeshores like Sleeping Bear Dunes or Pictured Rocks.

This is a spot that Jonathan and I got to by crossing private property, with permission. For that reason, I don't post the location for fear of encouraging people to trespass. For almost all other beaches, I post the location if there's public access.

I hate to say that these are all good, because it depends on what you're looking for and they vary from day to day, but here is a list of beaches with rocks that I've been to: Huron Shores Roadside Park south of Cheboygan Hoeft State Park 40 Mile Point Lighthouse Seagull Point Park in Rogers City Besser Natural Area north of Alpena Rockport State Recreation Area Partridge Point just south of Alpena Negwegon State Park Sturgeon Point Lighthouse Harrisville State Park Gratiot Park in Port Huron Lakeport State Park I'm probably forgetting a few, but that should be enough to get you started.

@jonathanyoung7785

I thought it was hematite and jasper when I first saw it, but after looking closer it wasn't banded iron formation (banded hematite and red jasper). Or if it was banded iron formation, it didn't look like any that I've ever seen in Michigan.

I agree with Jonathan. The colors are vaguely similar and the stripes are somewhat similar, but looking at the whole thing, I just don't see hematite.
