I got out just after the ice left the beach and found some really cool rocks.
The two main rocks I collect in this video are Petoskey stones and puddingstones. Both rocks are found mainly in Michigan, although a few may be found in some of the surrounding states.
The Petoskey stone (Hexagonaria) is an approximately 360 million old fossilized coral. It is the state stone of Michigan. Petoskey stones are calcite which is very soft, approximately 3 on the Mohs scale. Since they are so soft, they can be polished by hand. See this video for polishing instructions: • How to Hand Polish a P...
Puddingstones are a conglomerate stones comprised of red jasper and chert in a quartzite matrix. They are found in larger numbers on Drummond Island and St. Joseph Island in Canada but also across much of the lower peninsula of Michigan. They were called puddingstones by British settlers who thought they looked like a boiled suet pudding with berries. Puddingstone playlist: • Best of the Puddingsto...

Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

Oh Boy, do I love rock hunting with you! Your eye is drawn to all the same things I would be looking at. The waves, the sky at the horizon, the ice formations. I would be torn between photography/videography and rock-hounding. Do you do photography, by any chance? You have a good eye. Thanks for taking us along. Don't stop making these.

Thanks for the compliment. I took a photography class once, but I don't consider myself a good photographer. I don't even have a great camera. I use a GoPro for my videos. I have a Sony camera that I bought used. It's just a point and shoot, not a DSLR. I've been trying to be a little more artistic about some of my shots. I resist the urge to just take shots of the rocks. If you have any tips to improve my filming, I'm all ears.

In my younger day's I've found fossils, shark teeth, crystals and even amethyst at Malibu beach. Now just memories and my collection's. I meant to keep the Petoskey stone one cause I though it might have been a piece of a meteorite... Michigan Rocks no, I get being selective. I just wish that I could trail along (at least 6 feet away) and pick up some of the discards. I only started my first rock tumble last week and at this point am gathering quartz (northern Shenandoah in Virginia). I hope for jasper and agate but have only found one rock that I’m certain is jasper. I had never even heard of puddingstone until I watched this video. Thanks for your videos. I’m learning from you, rookie rockounding, agate dad, Chris Ralph and meMiner the most (so far).

@@virginiarocks I can't help you much with your local rocks. What I do is pick up some of everything that I like and see what tumbles. You'll run across similar rocks each time you go out and get to know what will do well. Then you can start to avoid stuff that doesn't shine up.

Michigan Rocks no worries, wasn’t expecting help. Just wishing I could rock hound in Michigan. And I will someday, when it is safer to travel again. I’ve always wanted to see the Great Lakes. My first time stopping by. Grew up Down State, always loved hunting Huron shores on the south end of the lake, my only access opportunity. Recently visited the UP and took my girls, 4 & 8, on their first shore-treasure find. They loved it and brought home about 100 marble sized specimens. We’ve invested in a new double-barrel tumbler so we can pretty them up. Teaches patience. I’m going to re-view this segment with them on the big screen, help spread the hobby. Great job!
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 3 года назад
If you need any help with that new tumbler, that's kind of my specialty. I have several videos on how to tumble. What tumbler did you get?
@berjo77
@berjo77 3 года назад
@@MichiganRocks, until we know the girls are going to want to keep up with the work, show the patience needed, went inexpensive with a Chicago Electric, Dual Drum Rotary Rock Tumbler. I have watched several of your videos on the basics, 2/3 to 3/4 filled drum, water fill 1/2 inch below rocks, 3 tablespoons of the 60 grit (we will hit our day 3 look-see on Thursday AM) and even bought decent rated abrasives and ceramics. So, we should be off to a good start. Question? I’ve inherited buckets and buckets of large fossilized coral, most showing small to medium crystals. I’ve been experimenting with rust remover (good results) and now muriatic acid at 50/50. Do you work with this kind of cleanup?
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 3 года назад
@@berjo77 I have not done too much with acid. I have a video on soaking chain coral in acid. I tried a couple other types, but the whole rock dissolved. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hjk3_KMLYXs.html
