Join Paul and I as we attempt to ferry two Lake Buccaneer airplanes across Canada and back again in the middle of winter. Things don't go according to plan as the engine quits over a remote part of northern Ontario and we perform a forced landing on a frozen lake.
This is part one of two and the first official episode of TomAir. If you like aviation adventure content like this please like, subscribe and share my channel. There will be many more adventures to follow.

MORE INFO & TOMAIR DISCLAIMER
I fly for fun and adventure and I strive to be the best, safest and most professional pilot that can be at all times but I am far from perfect. I have not been flying for a long time (since April 2015) but I always strive to be better. This channel is part of that process and another piece of the puzzle for me. I fly with as many people as I can and I seek out instructors and mentors whenever possible and I recommend that you do as well. I make sure that everyone I share the cockpit with with fits my style of flying and learning and that they can help me take my adventure higher.
Producing this RU-vid channel has made me grow as a pilot and for that I am truly thankful. Scouring through all the footage has shown me my strengths and weaknesses and that process has been humbling to say the least. I recommend videoing your own flights, watching them with an open mind and maybe even sharing them. There has been a lot of great feedback and wisdom in the comments on my videos as well. I always appreciate the constructive and almost always positive feedback. Keep it coming!
Please note that my videos are highly edited and some of the context of these flights is altered in order to keep the story moving. These videos are for entertainment purposes only and should not be considered a replacement for professional instruction by a certified flight instructor.
Fly safe and have fun!

I thought I had watched every aviation video on RU-vid. This one is the best I have seen. So much good info for a new pilot like myself who flies a 48 C170 up near Muskoka. Great work Tom. Glad you guys were prepared and came out with a great story.

Hello. Thank you for watching and for the kind words. Yes, we were prepared but we got pretty lucky as well. I fly in and out of CYQA all the time. I assume you know the folks at Lake Central?

Yes, those guys were key to how it all went down as they let search and rescue know that we are alive and well and they adjusted their rescue plan accordingly. I have since taken up the habit of monitoring 121.5 whenever I have a radio free for this same reason. This is an SOP that all general aviation pilots should adopt.

Thanks for watching. Pass them around if you can. I feel that we were very lucky that things turned out the way they did and that there is lots for all pilots to learn in here. Part of the reason I took the effort to put this together was to educate and inform.

One part in particular i'd like to call out especially to newer pilots. The importance monitoring 121.5 while flying. On this flight, you guys were the ones hoping someone was listening, and they were. I'll post a link to these in the next flight video I post.

Hello David. This is a treat to hear from you, my almost first flight instructor ever. You did a great job teaching me and I thank you for all the effort you put in. Looking back I can see that I was probably not the best student but we both stuck with it and now I feel like I am a pretty OK pilot. Still LOTS to learn but that is part of the joy. Thank you!

Perfect plane to land on overflow. I suspect a 172 or your Skymaster would have ended up jam side down.

Amazing video and very educational for me, im not a pilot but have a little experience. You guys really did a great job how you handled this! I betol it was a long cold night though!!! Not sure since i have part 2 to watch but i hope you were picked up quickly!!! What happens in a case such as this when i think you were basically ferrying someone elses plane home to them? Their insurance cover it or what? So glad you both got down safely!!! But good lord it had to of gooten cold that night!
@tomairtv
@tomairtv 8 месяцев назад
I think things are still being worked out money wise on the plane but insurance will certainly cover a lot of it. Me and Paul's rescue was compliments of the Canadian taxpayers and I am thankful to all Canadians for that.

Good stuff! Neighbor Jesse suggested your channel. Had a forced landing myself last year, had to splash down in a flooded quarry. It may be worth the drive to Acton but not the walk! Just saw a Skymaster buzz over couple days ago, maybe was you...

@@tomairtvNo - I've a wee strip north of Dundas, but my business is near Rockton. Pretty much directly under the path between CYFD and CZBA. I noticed first because of the distinctive sound (can tell when the neighbor is taking up his Lake too!) And that there was some pretty gnarly weather moving in. I fly a Rans S7 on amphibs.

How did they get the sea plane to it's final destination after landing it on the lake with no engine power?

At this stage, I see a total of 166 comments on this incident, all tossing flowers, with not a one asking for peer review on what has to be one of the stupidest flights of fancy ever undertaken. Where is Richard Collins when we need him?
@tomairtv
@tomairtv 8 месяцев назад
Not sure I follow as to why the flight was stupid. Please enlighten me. Richard Collins venerable publication Air Facts was happy to publish the written version of my story and no one had anything negative to say there either ( airfactsjournal.com/2023/08/my-lake-rescue-in-northern-ontario/ ). I am certainly open to hear what you feel we did wrong and how we could improve in your opinion. The main reason I put this material out there is to help educate the overall safety of our flying community.
@davebrough1902
@davebrough1902 8 месяцев назад
Rather than me enlightening you, I suggest that you take the time to enlighten you. Cover every milometer of those trips and try to come up with things you did stupid. Of which there were many. I also suggest that you start with a map showing your flight path along with the reasons you chose the particular routing you did. I’ll follow with my review. Dave Brough

So slow in telling the story, makes that old plane seem fast. Boring boring boring. Put your love fest in a separate video and get on with it.
