Speaking as a professional sailor who's been living the life for ten years: This movie is 100% dead on accurate to what being a sailor is like. It's absolutely wonderful to the point that it's recommended viewing in the fleet I work in. I was working as an Oiler when I first saw this and the way the Fireman describes doing a watch is perfect.

You're not wrong either, I did an apprenticeship up on the lakes and sailed around the world on Car Carriers and and on a tug now, this movie really nails how Merchant Mariners talk amongst ourselves

10 years on the ore boats on the lakes. Started as an OS at 18 my senior year of high school. Some of these men were on the boats when I first started out. Makes me miss those wide eyed times hauling cable trying not to screw up. Those days made me who I am and taught me more than any college degree could.

I watch this movie as the twilight of my own sailing career has passed me by. It’s so accurate in the depictions of the ridiculous things you talk about while you build a bond that you didn’t know was possible. I miss the guys from the Lee Tregurtha every day.

I used to own this film on DVD and really enjoyed it. Since losing my copy, I've looked online for years to replace it. I haven't seen it commercially available (even my copy was an Academy Screener). I like the shipboard scenes and representation of 'life aboard' more than the Garcia-led subplot or cuss-heavy dialogue. The main plot, like much D Mamet, is adventuresome, but many of the shotgun-blast, jabber-heavy, episodic encounters with shipmates (ostensibly meant to be sole shots at character development for cursory crew-members) fall short of typical Mamet charm and believability. The Tony Mamet/Forster interactions come off best, which is certainly a key intent of the piece, but I can't help feeling minor adjustments in the storytelling would have greatly improved the overall impact of the film. The cast is great, the acting is quite enjoyable and, though I'm not familiar with David Mamet's source material, perhaps still it's Mamet's own screen adaptation and Joe Montegna's freshman attempt at direction, or simply the Final Cut, that is at issue (I doubt like hell Mamet/Montegna ended up with Final Cut power). It's a very good film, but minor shifts in focus would have given this inland sea indie far more tonnage. As an aside, this film used the Seaway Queen to film the realistic, onboard scenes. After filming and a couple more years in layup in Toronto, the ship was towed to India for scrap. www.boatnerd.com/pictures/fleet/seaqun.htm

Good movie. Underrated. The nice weather in the movie is a bit of a misrepresentation. Those lakers go through a lot of nasty weather even in summer.

Nothing greatly HAPENIN here However, I took a lot of screenshots and they will be made into beautyfully ATHMOSPEHERIC DRAWINGS, Later to be made , maybe, into canvasses so in THAT.. Mamet WAS inspiring. Ps Note Men attempt to talk abt their interior Life But ...as there ain t much there in terms of Reflection...it all remains tentative. Any attempt at introspection ..doomed by their OBSEESION with genitals

If it's not to your taste then it's not to your taste, but I promise you the writing is sublime, just inarguably among the greatest scripts ever filmed. Now, if you don't like raw fish, the very best sushi in the world is gonna taste gross to you, and that's just the way of things.

Pretty lame except for the shipboard and ship shots. Poor plot and story development. Thankfully, a better movie is now in pre-production by a Canadian producer and film company although sadly, a steam powered lakeboat on the Canadian side no longer exists!

An outstanding film if you've sailed on a merchant ship - it's one of those movies where it just gets it, but I can see how it would be boring and undriven to most. This is hands down a love letter to everyone's first trip on a working ship
