The inner Cleveland suburb of Lakewood (population 51,000) calls itself a "walking school district." Lakewood has never had school buses in its history, and kids grow up walking and biking to school.
Mornings and afternoons are a beehive of activity on streets near schools, as kids and parents walk to and from classrooms. You can feel the energy. The freedom of being able to walk and socialize with friends is incalculable.
According to city planner Bryce Sylvester, Lakewood strives to design neighborhoods so that all children are within walking distance of their school. These decisions have paid off financially, saving the city about a million dollars annually, according to Lakewood City School District spokesperson Christine Gordillo.

To me (I am from the Netherlands) it is kind of shocking that this isn't the norm. I grew up with biking to school every day. getting picked up or walking. The notion of going to school in a bus isn't something we use here. even to High school children take a bike. I think it's great that this way of going to school is emerging in America. But I always thought it was like this everywhere because that is what I grew up with. Imagine my surprise!!

The Netherlands is the most densely-populated country in Europe, so I guess when communities are dense this is more common and doable.

I walked to Lakewood public schools in the 80s...it wasn't particularly fun in the winter. The sidewalks were bad. I was approached by a weird driver when I was 7 but I ran off. I feel safer driving my kids to school and picking them up.

And it was worse much earlier on. The walk to Lincoln was just awful.

too bad their school system is horrible. The teachers Bully, Harass and sexually Harass the students and get away with it. They do absolutely nothing about bullying especially if it is done by someone on their precious sports teams because they don't want to lose their players. I had to leave that school because of the constant struggle to do work and keep my grades up with the pressure of teachers hitting me with insults to my intelligence, self worth and even interests.

Tsundere Kitten - Wow, that’s ironic. I feel the same way and experienced much of the same circumstance - over 50 years ago! I attended Lakewood schools (McKinley, Hayes, Harding, and Lakewood High) and dreaded everything about them. I was a “class clown” and teachers despised me for it (the old “you’re not one bit funny”). When we moved to Bay Village, the teachers loved my sense of humor, my grades improved considerably and the environment was supportive and fun. Just seeing these images of Lakewood brought back terrible memories. Lakewood’s schools were banal bureaucratic stockades of teacher-union tedium.

I share your experience with that school system. I was bullied by several teachers witnessed others being bullied by teachers, stood up for some kids in 8th grade math class(Emerson Middle School cir 1983). Finally excelled at wrestling then I could do no wrong. I will never send my kids to that school system.

Lakewood also has a thriving culture and art scene. I saw Subtle Q play there last November: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wv_q9xc5jY4.html

I feel what u said in my school we only had like 3 black or even just mixed kids in our school and one day I thought this girl was my friend and she cane up to me and said “when I grow up I don’t wanna have a bad life like yours because ur dads black!” Knowing my dad mentally abused me and moved to georgia so obviously I confronted her and was about to lay hands and she started crying is the teachers took me to the office and I got in trouble
