Laksa Without 'Hum': What's Behind The Cockle Shortage? | For Food's Sake | CNA Insider

Imagine eating Singaporean and Malaysian fare like laksa or char kway teow without blood cockles. That day could come, with supply dwindling dramatically.
This has affected eateries like Two Chef's Eating House - whose signature dish is garlic and chilli cockles - which says the price of cockles has doubled in 5 years.
The key culprit? High levels of nitrates and phosphates from pollution which, according to researchers from Universiti Sains Malaysia, are suffocating the cockles.
While the Malaysian authorities have limited the size of harvest and distribution to revive the population, there are still fishermen who smuggle cockles to Thailand for sale, says the general manager of Pontian District Fishermen Association.
But there is hope in aquaculture as marine labs in Malaysia are breeding cockles in a controlled environment. #ForFoodsSake explores how.
Rising food prices are the new normal across the world - year by year, we’re hit by new reports about food inflation and price hikes. In Singapore, a country which imports 90 per cent of its food, the cost of such staple groceries as fish or bananas has almost doubled since 2008.
What are the forces driving the food prices up? How much will buying basic ingredients hurt our pockets in the future? Self-taught chef Lennard Yeong takes iconic Singaporean dishes, such as laksa or chicken rice, and dissects them to unravel the unlikely connections between world events and our table.
From price fixing scandals to pollution and mysterious diseases, Lennard travels across Southeast Asia to understand how seemingly random occurrences disturb the food supply in Singapore - and if it is possible to predict and prevent the price hikes and food shortages in the future.

I never knew what a cockle was until I watched this. Thanks CNA Insider! I sure hope the cockle population can come back. We are losing so many fish from over fishing. It’s hurt jobs, the environment and the people who eat the fish.

The problems is the nitrates and phosphates waste from pesticides and factory wastes that are causing the water pollution that is killing the cockles and other marine animals, and yet, instead of dealing with this issue, the Malaysian Government limits the number of young cockles that can be harvested. What kind of half-baked idea is that as a viable long-term solution? The practice of dumping factory wastes and any type of waste deem hazardous to any environment has to be stopped, heavier fines, imprisonments and complete closure of the factories has to be imposed and enforced.

So, they try to solve the end problem, but not the root cause. Because it goes deeper than just factory waste. But commendable, aquaculture. 👍🏽

Err Singaporeans any of you ever walk along the Sembawang beach lately? I see FW harvesting cockles and mussles along the beach near the jetty. They come up with buckets full and if you want big mud crabs that river near the 3M factory in Sembawang oso have quite big ones too.

Its a good idea to breed cockles but these things occupy space and they take 2 bloody years to grow to a big enough size to be consumed. Doesnt sound economical to me..

From this video I gathered that these shortages are caused by pesticides and factory waste. So has the malaysian government introduced new guidelines to plantations and factories to dump their industrial into the ocean and water system?

Those found in Malaysia so small. Went to Thailand once and got the shock of my life when I saw their cockles were as big as my fist. Can't Singapore import from Thailand or Vietnam? Why must be only from Malaysia?
