Sri Vittal Ramamurthy started his musical journey at an early age at home, and continued his violin training with Sri Hosahalli Venkataram and Smt. T. Rukmini (both of whom were themselves disciples of Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman). Subsequently, he was handpicked by Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman himself to be a direct disciple, an event he considers a major turning point in his life.
"Vittal", as he is known in the music world, is a Top Ranking artist of All India Radio and an internationally acclaimed violin soloist as well as accompanist. He has accompanied many great stalwarts, including Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, Sri D.K.Jayaraman, Sri Nedunuri Krishnamurthy, Sri N. Ramani, and his guru Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman. He has received numerous awards, including the Vadya Kala Vipanchee, Vani Kala Sudhakara and more, and is an Asthana Vidwan of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam and Sri Sringeri Sharada Peetam. Vittal is also a renowned teacher and has trained numerous students worldwide, including many who are leading performers today. He also conducts an annual music summer camp in his native hometown ‘Karunbithil’ to help cultivate the next generation of musicians and rasikas.
He remembers his guru's quest for perfection in all aspects of life. "Lalgudi sir's teaching went way beyond music", he recalls. "I have had innumerable discusions with him, on topics ranging from music and professional matters to personal and financial matters. Since he approached every facet of life, musical or otherwise, with perfection as his goal, he always had valuable insights and life lessons to offer on all matters", says Vittal with fond remembrance.
Vijayashri Vittal, daughter of Sri Vittal Ramamurthy and herself a budding vocalist, started learning vocal music from Sri S. P. Ramh and is now undergoing training from Smt. Bombay Jayashri. She also performed her Bharathanatyam Arangetram (student of Sri Vijay Madhavan) in the august presence of Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman. Srihari Vittal is learning violin from his father Vittal Ramamurthy.
