Lamar Jackson's 2023 MVP Was WILDY Overrated

Lamar Jackson's 2023 MVP is one of the weakest we have ever witnessed, yet some mainstream pundits like Stephen A Smith want us to believe that he should have been the unanimous MVP.
Lamar was one first place vote away from achieving that mark for the second time, but luckily Josh Allen rightfully got a singular first place vote.
This would have completely undermined what it means to be a unanimous MVP. Why? Because Tom Brady didn't even get a unanimous MVP in 2007 after breaking the passing touchdown record with 50 and going 16-0.
We have become over influenced by the media and intimidated to go against the grain. This leaves great players who serve up all time performances unrecognized.
In my eyes, this should have been a very tight race - I do believe you can make a case that Lamar was in fact the MVP, but by no means was he head and shoulders above his competition.
The fact of the matter is that the team around him in Baltimore was outstanding, the Ravens defense was the best in the league, and this helped Lamar gain a lot of recognition even though this year was not close to what he put on tape in 2019.
Tyreek Hill or Christian McCaffery should have had a chance to hoist the MVP this season, but of course, as the media likes to say, it's a QB award.
I hope that after watching this video, you might change your mind, and understand that when you play on a great TEAM, the figurehead (QB) gets more recognition than they might deserve. If that wasn't the case, then maybe Tyrod Taylor would have won the MVP in 2015.

I don't get why the voters are allergic to voting for a non QB. Me personally, I would've voted for CMC, Tyreek, Garrett, Bland, Ceedee or Warner before voting for a QB this year. And if I was gonna go QB I woulda went both Allen and Brock before Lamar. Lamar was very good. He's a very good QB. One of the best in the league. But to your point, for how deserving his 2019 MVP was, this one that much undeserved.

@@yourlocaltrucker6663 you and I both know that kind of "value" isn't taken into account for MVP. It's just the QB with the perceived best season. Obviously a QB holds more value than any other position. But MVP usually and should mean "best player." Just like a Heisman. In NBA, in NHL, in MLB, there isn't a designated position in either of those sports that receives the MVP above all others like we see in NFL. The biggest reason why Lamar Jackson won this year is his insane win percentage and production against great teams. He has by far the best record against winning teams this year and the best performances. Now do I think that it's a non conversation to say he isn't unanimous? No. But he has beat most of the best teams in the NFL.

Chiefs fan here and you all may not like hearing it, but we all know who the MVP was this year: It was Josh Allen. They were down and out, and he put the city of Buffalo on his back and dragged them to the 2 seed. He was efficient and made the right plays when he needed to over that stretch. For SAS to say a first place vote for him was cowardly is not only stupid, it was a cowardly statement on his part. You can’t tell me Lamar “finally,” got good weapons, and that Baltimore has the best defense in the league, and then Lamar led in 0 categories, you can’t tell me he was the most valuable piece on his team…

MVP has always been a sports media popularity contest. Casi in point: Aaron Rodgers, 2021: Passing Yards: 10th Touchdowns: 6th 4th Quarter Comebacks: 16th He had the fewest interceptions, which is great but that begs the question of whether he played it safe to keep that stat pristine, as he was accused of doing when the Packers and Rodgers looked lifeless in their one playoff game. But Rodgers was a media darling so he got the nod.

Great video! I think the Ravens suffered significant injuries on offence during the season. Dobbins in the pre-season, Andrews mid-season, Lamar was relying on unproven rookies and a washed OBJ to produce on O, meanwhile Purdy had a healthy CMC, Aiyuk, Deebo, and Kittle for the majority of the season. Although the stats push the game manager narrative for both of them, the circumstances are definitely different imo. I’m with you on pushing a non-QB MVP tho, Garrett should have been in the convo more that defense carried Flacco to the wild card come on

Applause for your excellent points. I rarely watch television talking sports-heads because they seem to be in the entertainment industry, rarely discussing valid relevant sports analysis. I'm an old man, old enough that when I was young, I learned the 1st acknowledged NFL MVP was center Mel Hein. More than one institution recognized MVP and they often differed. One year an institution said offensive tackle Lou Groza was MVP. Then a long series of backs received the award including Jim Taylor, Paul Hornung, and Jim Brown. I hadn't paid enough attention to realize it had become considered an award for quarterbacks. I was paying attention to American Football League MVPs in the 1960s. Six of the ten were non-quarterbacks: two wide receivers (Alworth, Cappelletti), three fullbacks (Gilchrist, Lowe, Nance), and one halfback (Haynes). The other four were three quarterbacks: Blanda, Namath, and Lamonica twice. Personally, in 1968 I would have voted the MVP for Ed Budde, left guard for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Brock Purdy plays in the most QB friendly system surrounded by a pro bowl caliber arsenal of skill players, backed up by an elite defense giving him short fields. All he’s asked to do is simply run the offense like Shanahan wants it to be run. Is he a good QB? Yes. But he’s overrated and has no business being an MVP candidate, context matters. Lamar IS the system. You can’t quantify his impact by numbers. His presence makes everyone’s lives easier, oline life is easier, the backs can reel off big runs, receivers are running open all because of Lamar. Josh Allen has Stef on diggs, Dak Prescott has CeeDee, Justin Herbert had Allen and Williams, Hurts has Smith, Brown, and a brick wall of an oline. None of these are system QBs, and when you look at Purdys film, he looks good. He can make almost every necessary throw, he just gets to throw to a very talented group. 33 TDs in 16 games is very good, and some elite people who also have play makes can’t get there.

This was a tradition style offense and when his favorite option mark Andrew’s went down and Lamar could still do normal qb things and the won it made it seem like Lamar had finally become a true qb. Now again these narratives should not have made him the mvp but they had to because it was a feel good story. Personally Lamar should have won comeback player of the year but nobody wants to go there

The amount of time Lamar sat out in the 4th due to blowing out teams so bad was over a game, not including sitting out the entire last game. On top of that they rushed for the most yards. Lamar is not going to have the most passing yards
@SpaTown808

When you run the ball as much as Jackson does in his offense, you’re not going to rack up the most dominant passing stats. And you said it yourself - 85 of LJ’s runs were designed, in turn, meaning his lack of passing production was a product of the coach’s decision to heavily utilize him as a runner. You couple this with all of the games he sat in the 4th qtr or just didn’t play at all, his numbers were not as bad as it seems. We can’t sit here and act as if having Flowers, Edwards, Andrews, Likely, and Agholor is the equivalent of having Aiyuk, McCaffrey, Samuel, Kittle, and Jennings. Purdy had a bit more room to be a “game manager” considering the amount of talent on the field with him. In the SF-BAL game, only one QB was rattled by the others’ great defense. It makes for good convo, but to talk Lamar’s offensive supporting cast up to the level of a SF is being a little disingenuous. I will say that you’ve convinced me that the race should’ve been closer, though.

Bro while your consternation is well-founded, the MVP is not an objective award. Perception plays a great part in it. Meausrables mean less than we think. I do wish the format were changed to honor more players (e.g QB cannot win OPOY, MVP becomes Most Outstanding Player, individual position group awards -like all-pro but with trophies), but this is literally the same award that the AP gave to a kicker in the 70s….how seriously can you take it

Ngl calling the ravens the most complete team is definitely a big stretch, offensively at least. If you look at the roster for the chiefs and ravens offensively; I can’t find much to separate them honestly. Rookie and unproven WRs, Kelce/Mark/Likely, Pacheco/Gus, average at best O lines. The ravens definitely were not as complete offensively like the 49ers, Rams, Lions, Eagles, Bengals, the list really can go on

I have a very strong feeling the AP voters are all too opinionated and driven by narratives instead of judging mostly by objective stats and performance on the field alone. All the voters seem to have different parameters for what matters most for certain awards. How does Lamar get 49/50 MVP votes when at least 3 other players (not just QBs) had objectively better seasons? How does Myles Garrett win DPOY when multiple other defensive players had objectively more productive seasons? Did CJ Stroud win OROY just because he's a QB or did he really have a more historic season than Puka Nacua? And to top it off, "Comeback Player of the Year" can have wildly varying definitions depending on who you ask. Some say Damar Hamlin because of what happened in the Bengals game last year, despite him barely seeing the field at all this year. Some say Baker Mayfield because he had a solid season after looking completely cooked in Carolina and LA the previous year. Some say Flacco because he came off the couch and put up pretty good counting stats, getting the Browns into the playoffs despite having a small sample size of regular season games. I would at least like them to be much more transparent and create objective definitions of what they look for in certain awards. It seems like a total mess from top to bottom when 50 voters have 50 differing opinions of what each award should represent. The current system is incredibly flawed and needs a complete overhaul. It's just so confusing and it really takes away from the prestige and credibility that these awards have in the first place. One more analogy just for fun. The Grammys are done in a very similar way, even though nobody really cares about the Grammys anymore (for good reason). I will use Metallica as an example because I am a big Metallica fan. In 1989 it was the first time ever the Grammys had a category for "Best Heavy Metal Performance" and Metallica looked like the clear favorites to win, but they actually gave it to Jethro Tull. Jethro Tull wasn't even in the venue to accept the award because they felt they didn't deserve to win it, which was awkward. A few years later Metallica finally did win their first Grammy, but drummer Lars Ulrich joked that they only won because Jethro Tull didn't release an album that year. Metallica has won a few more since then, the most recent one being last month. However, there has been criticism that another (much newer and less known) band called Spiritbox should have won instead. Which only gives more fuel to the conspiracy theories that say the Grammys give out awards to big name acts that they personally feel are most deserving of continued recognition, not to the people that actually deserve it most. Call it a "make up" or "pity" award. I feel like the same thing happens sometimes with NFL awards as well. Even other leagues like the NBA, a lot of people think Embiid only won MVP last year because voters didn't want Jokic winning for a third time in a row, despite Jokic probably deserving it more. I don't know what solution would be better, but I do know something has to change. And don't even get me started on pro bowl voting!

@@joericottone Eh the only games you can blame him on is the SF where he threw 3 picks and the Arizona game where he failed to dismantle that mediocre defense. Besides that his defense failed him with one stop in Miami game, the defense crumbled against the Bills in the exact same way with Green Bay and the first Eagles game was just a shootout. To your videos point defense is super important to the MVP award even though most of the candidates aren’t even defensive players, Like the most important game to the MVP race was Ravens vs 49ers, did Lamar make Purdy throw 4 interceptions? no of course not but in the MVP narrative it made Lamar look like he dismantled the SF defense when in reality he just thrived of those turnovers his defense gave him. The reason why I bring this up is because the opposite is used for Dak, when his defense just absolutely falls apart like in Buffalo it’s treated like he was the main reason they lost that game.

@@joericottone I agree with your statement. Except it was Mahomes who led the Chiefs down the field in regulation to score the tying FG in the Super Bowl. And it was Mahomes who led the team down the field in overtime to score the game winning TD in the Super Bowl. Maybe the correct thing to do is get rid of the regular season MVP award. Just give out medals for most passing yards, most rushing yards, most tackles, most sacks, most defense interceptions, most FGs made, etc. All objective. Then give the Super Bowl MVP to the person you "feel" was the best. Or most helped the team win the Super Bowl.

Sounds pretty *OXYMORONIC* to me. Lamar was the catalyst to a 13-4 record. Whereas Tyrod Taylor was 8-8 leading the Bills in '15. Plus, Lamar *DOMINATED* against the other MVP candidates. And, was barely even in a deficit all season in *HISTORICAL* fashion. 1 idiot away (Aaron Schatz) from being the first 2x unanimous MVP ever. (99 out of 100 votes) The NFL literally allowed 'em to single-handedly revise history pickin' Josh Allen who led the league in turnovers. Moreover, almost didn't even make the playoffs 'til the Bills changed OC's and ran the ball more w/ James Cook. Meanwhile; Lamar led the Ravens #1 rushing attack again; and hasn't had a 1,000 rusher since RB Mark Ingram (1,018) in '19 unless it was himself.
