Thanks for this video. About to start renovation works on a house and will probably go with laminate flooring. I always assumed it was cheap looking until a friend of mine suggested it to me, I've been very impressed since.

Very informative video. We too installed laminate wood floors at our previous home and not only did they look fantastic but they turned out to be extremely durable, especially with a little toddler at home. It's a great alternative to consider when selecting new flooring. :)

Thank you so much for your video, very informative. I'd like to ask you if you could do a video on how to clean your laminate floors please. There are so many videos out their, some of the floor cleaners you have in America are not available in Australia. I love my laminate floor & I've never used anything but luke warm water in a spray bottle & a microfiber mop. I've had my laminate floors for two years now & they still look new. They are a high gloss spotted gum, it's really beautiful. All my visitors always say how beautiful the floors look. I'm really happy with my laminate floors & easy to take care of. Thank you 😁

Older video but a good one :). I put down laminate in my house and find that it scratches easy if you're not careful. My vac had a little rock stuck on the plastic wheel and I just wanted to lightly vac the room and it scratched the hell out of a few planks. That isn't the first time either my shop vac did the same thing as I was installing. Also a rock in a shoe tread can also damage the floor so take off your shoes :P. I don't know of any fix for the clear coat being scratched. Maybe acetone or something strong can melt it out but I doubt it. Problem too is some of my planks are impossible to get to without tearing up like 60% of the floor. One day the whole house will get tiled I hope.

Hmmm, we got our floors from Lumber Liquidators. A good pice is about $2.50 to $3 per square foot for the Laminate. The installation price varies, it could be $2-$4 per square foot. So altogether your looking at about $4-$6 per square foot, and I think that is defiantly a good price. It can get much more pricey. But Lumbar Liquidators has sales all the time, so catch the floors you like on sale and that will help!

Make sure your laminate is at least 12mm think, but the secret is in the padding! If you get a really thick nice padding that goes under the floor, it makes all the difference!

Do the floors feel spongy when you walk on them? I want to replace some carpet on a second floor for a work shop. I like the laminate option, but I want the hard wood feel with the scratch resistance of laminate. I need the floor to be firm to support work benches, and tools; with a level working surface.
@stephanielynnhome
@stephanielynnhome 7 лет назад
I would say they are not super springy, but our floor isn't the most level underneath so it's more springy in some spots than other spots. My particular laminate floor would not be good for what you are describing, but I know they make some very heavy duty laminate that businesses get in their stores. I also know vinyl is taking off in a whole new way and it very durable, you may want to check into that. I hope that helps!

George Angelini just sweep and also What you can used is 3 part water and 1 part vinegar and just gently mist in the air and let it settle on the floor. Last step is just dry mop it.
@thomfoz
@thomfoz 6 лет назад
First vacuum and then use a low pressure steam cleaner. If your steam cleaner is high pressure, like the Karcher i have, use it on the lowest setting. Never use any kind of soap or chemicals on your floor as it may make it dangerously slippery. Steam a small area and then count the seconds it takes to dry. It should take no longer than 30 seconds to dry with no additional help. It it takes longer, it means you're using too much steam and can damage your floor. After you discover the ideal setting, one thing that helps a lot is opening all the windows, turn on a fan or close windows and turn on the A/C on maximum cold, so it will dry the floor even faster. Steam will remove dirt and messy stains, and also make the floor shine. Eventually, you may want to wipe the floor with a dry microfiber mop. it can postpone the next cleaning.

@@SuperSoulSeeker I have been using it on my laminate flooring for a couple years now with no issues! It also has to do with the quality of laminate you have as well. Some hold up better than others, and the newer stuff hold up better than even what have. Your floors will be slightly damp after your done, but it dries fast, you can also put some alcohol in your solution to help it dry faster as well! I hold the button under the handle down the whole time, so it dispenses and sucks the whole time. My floors are so clean!

What is the brand, and which pattern?
@RecklessTheory
@RecklessTheory 6 лет назад
most wood floors are almost always nailed down not glued. laminate is a great option for the price it has a great durable wear layer but it is always susceptible to water damage as it uses either a medium or high density fiber board between the layers which expands when water gets into it so you need to clean up spills quickly and never mop it. For areas that are prone to moisture/water it's better to use a vinyl plank flooring, these are newer to the market but the top surface of them is waterproof.
@stephanielynnhome
@stephanielynnhome 5 лет назад
In Florida we have to glue we can't nail because all of our floors are solid concrete underneath. I have heard about vinyl, I need to check into that!
@RecklessTheory
@RecklessTheory 5 лет назад
I forgot on grade is mostly concrete down south. There is ways to create a plywood subfoor over a concrete one but then you are adding quite a bit of thickness to the floor. It's a good idea if done right. Ideally you use a fabric like landscaping fabric first to dampen noise then an air-gap underlayment so that it can breath and dry out followed by the plywood and then another underlayment for the actual floor you are putting down. which is a lot of thickness but if someone wanted real hardwood they would likely have to do that kind of thing. it adds performance both in drying ability and insulation and opens up to all floor options to the installation but it costs a lot more money to do all that over a a simple floating floor or carpet.
@MrHalmorris
@MrHalmorris 6 лет назад
In one of your response comments below you stated that your floor may not have been very level when you put the laminate flooring down. Apparently it wasn’t a problem for you after the installation since you didn’t mention it in the video. This is a concern for me. How “off” would guess your floor was, 1/8” peaks and valleys, or would you say it was greater than that.
@stephanielynnhome
@stephanielynnhome 6 лет назад
There is actually no peaks or valleys when you look at the floors, the panels connected together nicely. It's only when you step on the floor sometimes you feel it give more than in other spots because of the foundation that's not very level. So like you said it ended up not being a problem for us. :)

I don't know if it's a good DIY because we hired a company to put it in. I am not familiar with the aqua laminate but I'm very intrigued! I would still research the thickness of the aqua, even if you have to ask the company how thick it is.

@stephanielynnhome
@stephanielynnhome 4 года назад
I'm actually not a fan of the vinyl, but I know a ton of people love it! It's all a matter of preference, I personally try to avoid glued down floors because the glue emits fumes, but in Florida vinyl has been a huge hit!
@garnhamr
@garnhamr 4 года назад
@@stephanielynnhome There is no fumes from the glue used for LVT. Only downside is the cost. Doubt i'll ever understand why some of it costs as much as £100 for every square meter. Can get some that's about £14 (polyflor camaro) that still looks decent but even that can soon add up to a large bill. What makes me love glued down LVT is that it's decent in almost all aspects of what you want from a floor and if it's not abused will last forever. Yet there are so few videos like yours, about LVT.

Sadly, I've learned through experience that laminate, wood & even vinyl flooring is an awful flooring solution for our homes. No one talks about the water damage issue. There's really no repairing laminate or vinyl flooring. Here's what happened: - The mold issue; water in a warm, dark place without air circulation = mold growth - Product (regularly) discontinued, can't buy more to use for repairs - - not only product discontinued, but similar colors are different width & depth, & tongue/groove pattern, so they won't connect to your old flooring - There are no flooring people willing to struggle with successfully pulling out laminate carefully enough to repair your floor. Basically, if you have a sizeable water spill (say 6'x6') you have to buy a whole new floor Only 17 months ago I had Lowe's Pergo laminate flooring installed throughout my 'great room', which included the kitchen. It's lovely, really enjoy it. No personal spills that would cause buckling BUT there was a water leak that had water from pipes flooding my kitchen. My Pergo was so well made, sealed on the bottom too, & the foam backing cushion. My Pergo was very high quality. It's amazing to me that with all that water on it, yet I saw no signs of it buckling! But the water was definitely seeping down in spots to the neighbors ceiling, so obviously the water was getting under the Pergo. Yet, 24 hours later the Pergo showed no signs of trying to buckle! Wow! I thought it may survive the water. Unfortunately what I didn't think about was that water sitting under the Pergo would be growing mold! There is no way to send air down beneath the Pergo to dry it out. ALL the water soaked flooring had to be torn up to dry out the area to prevent mold. I instructed the professionals to remove the flooring as carefully as possible, so I could have it pieced back together. But the tongues & grooves are so fragile that barely any of them survived the ordeal. I now have to spend $2000 and go through the trouble of taking everything out of those rooms to have the 17 month old flooring torn-out and replaced with new (the style of Pergo I'd purchased has been discontinued and there is none, across North America, to create a fix for the current floor). I would give this same warning to wood & vinyl laminate buyers! When a water disaster happens, you to have the problem of mold growing under it in that dark, warm, wet area where the water is trapped. It seems to me that your vinyl laminate may not swell due to water & look bad, but I think you'd still want to remove it to prevent mold. Sadly, they won't be able to remove whole, reusable pieces (it will crack & break), so unless you have a huge stockpile of the same flooring, you're back to replacing the entire floor. Honestly, I suggest not buying either of these floor coverings.

In all honesty you should stay away from any cheap Chinese made product. The more expensive laminates are an excellent flooring choice. As far as damage is concerned.... the things that would damage a laminate floor would damage a hardwood floor as well. Yes you can resurface hardwood .... laminate strip can also be replaced in some cases. Tile floors are another choice but make no mistake durability varies considerably. Grout issues can also be a consideration as regrouting is very labour intensive.
