Lancashire Butter Pie | Potato and Onion Pie 

Someone needs to say it, The butter wouldn't melt so we put it in the pie. We're so sorry uncle Albert, but we haven't done a bloody thing all day.

My mother (from Preston) used to make butter pie. Yours isn't too bad but it needs pepper as well as salt. Quite a lot of pepper.

Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this son of York, who needed to be delivered to Lancashire for a pub crawl in Bury.

As a Prestonian and North End fan I have to say that shop bought butter pies are insipid. Home made are delicious but you missed out a necessary ingredient, white pepper never be tempted to use black pepper. It should be added when sweating off the onions in the butter. The potatoes should also be added to the onions and butter so they soak up the butter as well. Hmmm yummy served with red cabbage and mushy peas.

Thanks for these videos. My wife is an ex chef retired, so i now enjoy experimenting after years as an electrician. Bread being my main interest. Was amazed at the results of a egg and bacon pie , something i had never heard of before . It was not your recipe, but basically the same. I will do it again using your technique. This one looks good , wife never heard of this pie.. but will give it a go.

Hiya Keef - just loved this video. I Lived in Leyland Lancashire between 1980 and 1990 and worked at BNFL (half way between Preston and Blackpool). My colleagues and I would spend our lunch times in the company's social club washing down our butter (and meat and potato) pies with copious quantities of Thwaites's and Mathew Brown's bitter. What happy memories you've awakened! I now live in the north east and am happily married to a local lass to whom I've often waxed lyrical to regarding butter pies. Do you ever get the feeling that somebody thinks you've made something up - or thinks you are the victim of an overwrought imagination? Well, that's the feeling I get when I extol the glories of Lancashire butter pies. I've had great success with making Cornish pasties and scotch pies - well Keef, thanks to you, I can now present the ellusive butter pie to my other half. Wish me luck!

Preston's reputed best is from "Berrys" on New Hall ln, Preston. Good attempt from a Yorkshireman, Oh yes, pie butty from the pie shop in the entrance to St John's shopping centre, Preston.

Preston lass here, great video. We had butter pie every Friday in our house from Dean’s bakery on Blackpool road, Lane Ends in Ashton, Preston. We also have the butter and cheese version which is my favourite.

Dear Mr and Mrs. Keef: I come from Ashton-under-Lyne which is up the road from Bury. Mum bought the black Pudding it was simply boiled and served with potatoes, butter and salt. Loved It. My husband Jack and I had a bakery in Stamford Square AUL.. and i still use our recipe for onion pie, which we had pre-orders for and sold out on a Friday. All your recipes bring back such memories of my past. Thank You.

Mrs. Keef Cooks has excellent taste -- and so does Keef Cooks' pie (according to the Mrs.).

As a confirmed meaty, I never would try a Veggie Pie, but I had one of these at Deepdale at the Fulham Match a few years ago and they were delicious. I wish we got these down South.

When Mrs. Keefcooks said she liked the first one, the look on your face was priceless. Enjoyed your little victory dance when she chose the second pie. Now, if you will excuse me, I need to go bake some of these little gems for myself and Mrs. Gunnysgt1911.

Nice one Keef. You inspired me to do something vaguely similar with carrots, courgettes and butter beans instead of potatoes. Wholemeal flour for the pastry too, but then I weakened and shoved some Stilton into it 😋

Hello Keef my Grandma & Mum used to sprinkle a little white pepper on the middle layer of spuds to give it a spice. Plus they used lots of salted butter on each spud layer. Yours looks just like them.

I saw KeefCooks in the title and clicked Like without hesitation! He could've fried up a cowpattie and it gets my vote. The pie looks like it should be served in a plate full of gravy, jus' sayin'. today's tip: when eating black puddings always tuck the tablecloth into your collar. that way, if the pudding slips out of you mouth it will slither it's way back down onto your plate!

The only way I ever heard of butter pie was in an early 1070`s Paul McCartney and Wings song, "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey." Thank you for the answer to my 50-year-old question. Cheers!

The problem is not adding things you think will make it better... made me laugh.. haha, thanks for the happiness you gave me today. We all need to laugh.. My Yorkshire wife has attempted butter pies ,Not coming from the sunny side of the Pennines tyhe pies inevitabbly come out shrivvled, Hard, Dry and Cold. I must encourage her to stir the pot amd softem the edges

Westmorlandand her butter pie was done in a big brown dish potatoes were diced and onions were cooked together .then she filled her pie dish put half a pound of best butter on top then a lovely thick crust....ow what memories x x

Just found your channel here. I was intrigued by the Lancashire butter pie as I'd never heard of it. But once you bit into the shop bought one I was taken right back to my mum's Potato and onion pie. Sometimes she would add Lancashire cheese.

I've heard the Pennsylvania Dutch add a tbsp of vinegar and I've tried it and it does improve the crust

Thanks for the recipe Keef I lived in Bamber Bridge and Lostock Hall (both 4 miles ish from Preston) for my first 20 odd years during the 70s & 80s The pies in those villages where immense at the time... I have not been back in many, many years sadly so I have no idea if the traditions have been kept alive I make my own pies these days but I throw a little spice in there these days Quick story @ 19 I went to work in London for a while and at my first lunch break I went to the local chippy. I confidently asked for Meat and Potatoe pie, chips, peas and gravy in a tray with a plastic fork. The bloke behind the counter looked at me as if I had come from a different planet. Which I guess I did and I’m sure it’s still like that 35+ years on. The only thing he had that I asked for was chips. And they where disgusting 😊

I'm sure I've had a version of this pie keef, there used to be a bake shop in Breck road and my mum would buy a Whites's pie for us for our tea. Deffo going to have a go at this pie as it looks fab. I did laugh at the term Catholic pie 😆 I'm with Mrs K everything is better with gravy and it needed a side of freshly fried chips and mushy peas followed by a 48 hour carb coma 👍

Hi Keef, brought up in Leeds, in family pork butches, Dinkey Pies were always on sale every week in all our 5 shops, they were also known as 'Whist Pies' popular nibles at the local whist drives. In fact I've hd a business here in Granada Spain for the past 25 years and still have the old 'Dinkey Pie' blocking die today. Love your videos, good wishes to you and Mrs Keef Cooks for 2020.
