Champion American cyclist Lance Armstrong discusses his experiences as a survivor of testicular cancer, and explains the origins of the ubiquitous yellow "Livestrong" bracelet.
-----
Bob Schieffer interviews Lance Armstrong at the 2007 Aspen Ideas Festival.
Some of the most inspired and provocative thinkers, writers, artists, business people, teachers and other leaders drawn from myriad fields and from across the country and around the world all gathered in a single place - to teach, speak, lead, question, and answer at the 2007 Aspen Ideas Festival. Throughout the week, they all interacted with an audience of thoughtful people who stepped back from their day-to-day routines to delve deeply into a world of ideas, thought, and discussion.
Lance Armstrong is a retired American professional road racing cyclist. He won the Tour de France - cycling's most prestigious race - seven consecutive times, from 1999 to 2005. In doing so, he beat the previous records of five wins by Miguel Indurain (consecutive) and Bernard Hinault, Eddy Merckx and Jacques Anquetil. Previous to this achievement he also survived testicular cancer, a germ cell tumor that metastasized to his brain and lungs in 1996. His cancer treatments included brain and testicular surgery, and extensive chemotherapy.
Armstrong's athletic success and dramatic recovery from cancer inspired him to commemorate his accomplishments, with Nike, through the Lance Armstrong Foundation, a charity founded in 1997. The foundation's yellow rubber "Livestrong" wristbands, first launched in 2004, have been a major success, netting the foundation more than $60 million dollars in the fight against cancer, while helping Armstrong become a major player in the nonprofit sector.
These achievements have at times been clouded by allegations that Armstrong used performance enhancing drugs to achieve some of his wins. However, no conclusive evidence has been presented to verify these allegations, which he vigorously denies, and Armstrong has never failed a doping test.
Bob Lloyd Schieffer is an American journalist who has been with CBS News since 1969, serving 23 years as anchor on the Saturday edition of CBS Evening News from 1973-1996; chief Washington correspondent since 1982, moderator of the Sunday public affairs show Face the Nation since 1991, and, between March of 2005 and August 31, 2006, interim weekday anchor of the CBS Evening News. Katie Couric, formerly of NBC's The Today Show, succeeded Schieffer as anchor on September 5, 2006.

Regardless of his sports reputation. This guy is still much an inspiration for anyone going through cancer and fight against it. Not to mention the money he's raised to help patients all over the World. God bless him

Facts people disrespecting him as if the man wasn’t diagnosed with a potentially fatal disease

Great guy and an inspiration. He had stage 3 I have stage 4. I’m fighting hard I’m in incredible physical shape. I’m doing one hour cardio a day and 40 minutes in the sauna. Other than I went through double the amount of chemo he went through and I also did high power radiation. My tumor just came back and now I need another scan. I’m not giving up ✊🏼

Never was a big Armstrong fan. But I really have to say: tough guy and inspiration. Guys like him, Novlene Mills, Max Parrot, or Ruben Lenten give me a lot of hope since my diagnosis! Additionally organisations like the Livestrong organisation are super important for us all! So thanks a lot! :)

He rode his bike 30- 50 miles a day on chemo. Cancer doesn't want anything to do with that.

Yes you may have, but you may not have had the same type of cancer, as Lance had a 40% chance of survival. You also didn't win 7 tour de France races after surviving cancer. And regardless of whether he doped or not he created an organization which raised almost half a BILLION dollars for cancer research, and is still a great person.

I remember reading that cancer thrives in acidic areas, therefore, if your body ph is alkaline it's impossible to get cancer.

just wondering what the cause of Lances cancer was? I don't understand how someone who ticks all the right anti-cancer lifestyle boxes, and who also happens to be a world class athlete can develop cancer? is there a high chance that you can just develop it anyway?

Lance Pharmstrong's cancer treatment was RAPID, and strait to the objective. Lance IMMEDIATELY stopped doping before going onto his chemo QUICKLY. hGH, insulin, Deca Derabolin, Stanozolol make tumors grow at a break-neck pace. Lance knew this, and he did knew destroying his cancer meant going OFF these juices ASAP! Lance waited a full 14 days after his last chemo cycle before going back on EPO, HGH, testosterone, cortizeon, insulin to prep for his comeback races.

lyoure kinda off topic.. But you want an explanation? Nearly all cancers are caused by abnormalities in the genetic material of the transformed cells. These abnormalities may be due to the effects of carcinogens, such as tobacco smoke, radiation, chemicals, or infectious agents. Other cancer-promoting genetic abnormalities may be randomly acquired through errors in DNA replication, or are inherited, and thus present in all cells from birth.

ye you're probably right. I also don't compete in cycling and never spoke with teammates about LA or doping. I also don't think like most Dutch semi cycling pros that LA is one of the worst characters if it comes to sportsmanship. funny how all negative comments only comefrom the US. :) but then again using dope isn't illegal in and popular US sport. :baseball, football, icehockey, triatlons people get caught everyday, yet according to us sport standarts they cant get banned from the games :)

They never tell the full truth, except for Jesus Manzano who quit Kelme a number of years ago after collapsing and almost dying. You can goodle Jesus Manzano if you want. For legal reasons, all he could do was talk about himself :). People out there are not good people, but for the good ones the truth will set you free!

When Lance Armstrong started campaigning for socialized medicine and raising taxes (Measure 50) in Oregon, he crossed the wrong line. For that I say SCREW Lance Armstrong. Stay out of Oregon and our politics!

Lol cancer is easy to survive. Also, winning 7 tours is easy if you're a good cyclist who knows how to dope without getting caught.
