ahhh, memories. I had a '78 mk1... I loved it... i can't deny it was a rust bucket tho'. The most dangerous thing i found was the brakes. A few times in the damp i locked up and slid past the car in front.. scary stuff. I remember there was not enough space between stearing wheel and indicator stalks etc, my knuckles scrapped against them all the time until i adopted a finger tip type grip on the wheel.
A tooth snapped off the first gear cog, that made a noise like hammers clanking together till it got fixed.. had to have engine out maybe 3 times. I remember MANY times getting exhaust fixed as it kept breaking off mounts. Oh, it used to get stuck in reverse and i had to take selector out of gearbox and i had a bit of metal bent up so i could knock it into neutral then assemble selector again, got it down to under 10 minutes eventually.
Sitting here laughing with my wife at the memories.. It was very unreliable, but..... I loved it. It was so easy to work on, just as well!! It looked amazing, sounded amazing, and it was quicker than the bmw 3 series of the time. i used to "race " one to work somedays and could out accelerate and beat on top speed. LOL, i would have another one today...
