30 years ago my good friend Billy Lawhorn had one of these a 76 that ran in imsa GTU , He was getting ready to restore it and install a Dino 2.4 v6 when he died of pancreatic cancer . I helped his father sell the car to a lancia club in the bay area and i helped him liquidate 7 other fiats and lancias to other collectors.

While working as Fiat mechanic in the late 70’s one of the street versions dropped by. Absolutely stunning car that was originally intended to be the Fiat X2.0 but it turned out so nice Fiat turned it into the Lancia Beta Monte Carlo (Scorpion). It had the Fiat Twin Cam 1800 in it. Too nice to be a Fiat X1.9 replacement.

The 037 has always been one of my favourites. I'm doing a resto-mod X1/9 in the UK at the moment. Regarding the Lampredi 4-cyl production engines, my understanding is there were two. The big block is the twin cam and the little block is the single cam. The small block, originally 1300cc (X1/9 Series 1) was stroked twice by the factory - to 1500cc (X1/9 Series 2) and then 1600cc (Lancia Delta Mk1). Later, the block was modified to include a revised oil gallery (Fiat Tipo) which allows the 1600 crank to be used with shortened rods and oversize pistons, to increase capacity to 2 litres. Headwork, particularly increasing the exhaust valve size, and flow testing etc along with the usual lightening, balancing, and raising the compression to around 11:1, will significantly improve the power output. The addition of programmable injection and ITB's, will give around 200bhp at 7500 rpm in fast road tune. I've also managed to lighten the car a lot (to 802kg currently) by replacing the wheels and seats with much lighter ones, and deleting the headlamp motors, window motors, roof, jack, toolkit, spare wheel, bumpers, and washer reservoir, plus fitting a racing battery, reduction gear starter, and a tiny Denso alternator.

@@markbowden7238 not sure about Lampredis FIAT DOHC, but old generation of Alfa Twin Spark engines (like in 164, 155) was all aluminium. Later 16V TS engines were heavier, bc of cast iron block. Good luck with the project!!

You might find this documentary interesting - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3D7880YqCuA.html I don't speak Italian but he's using the Alfa D2 engine + X-Trac sequential from the 156 SuperTouring. I think the D2 engine is a hybrid design, put together from various Lancia/Alfa/Fiat parts eg the block is the Lampredi big block (iron) with an Alfa twin-cam head, built by Abarth, it has 'Alfa Corse' on the cam cover but Fiat on the block.

Yeah those turbos back then were mad.. however the Jolly club one is fitted with a 1775 ccm and twin turbo, so it puts out little under 500 hp. The first evolutions had a mere 220 and 310 with supercharger. Which Lancia favoured.. A 2 litre supercharged version also

Molto interessante!

And on another personal opinion... Why was I not born in the 1960's?? Then I would have been a sports journalist, covering the late 70's, 80's and 90's... With all those beautiful, recognizable and unforgettable vehicles made back then, when motorsport was a real manly man's sport... when race drivers could conquer any title without fearing that sponsors would be upset, and risk it all in f.ex this particular vehicle for the delight of themselves and the fans

hard to believe but this car has a 1.4l engine, downsizing already existed at the time
@simoneburini4036
@simoneburini4036 3 года назад
Downsizing in racing temporarily ended in the second half of the 80s, when the FIA and the organizers of DTM started demonizing turbos, for a series of reasons that were only partially... Reasonable. Turbos were phased out of F1, Sport Prototypes and touring car racing, and came back only through GT racing. This is what I came to understand searching on the Internet. It is possible that I'm completely wrong LOL

You can see why an F1 title sponsor has to get out of a losing team way before they drop down the grid. The residual effects of staying around too long are unreal!. I think Martini are really sore about Willams' decline because, before their sponsorship, Martini racing sponsorship was always known for winners, now that livery has the opposite effect. Sad.
