For those too young to know, it is hard to describe what a sensation Lancia was in rally racing in the late 1970's and early 80's. I was in high school at the time and guys who liked European racing and cars thought the Stratos was the coolest thing ever built. It is a very short wheelbase car, so it can get around corners like few cars can, but it is tail happy with all the weight at the back, so while it handles beautifully, it can be tricky according to those who have driven it.
I didn't need the music, but the footage is fantastic! Love that bellowing Stratos sound. The car was a true thoroughbred - tough, quick, agile, and a nightmare to control if you weren't up to the job. But man, was it exciting to watch! (Please note: I've never driven a Stratos.) I drove close-support vehicles for privateers twice on the Safari in the 1980s, and the clips of Sandro Munari brought back some wonderful memories. The stages were run on open public so-called 'roads', and the cars and crews always took a tremendous beating. One of the years I drove was officially classed as 'wet' (the rainy season started early), and the conditions were horrendous. We finished both events, but in the wet year we crawled into Nairobi 11 hours behind the leaders! Thanks for uploading. :-)
When i was a kid, all my friends loved Collin MCray's Subaru, but in one of historical races we all saw how one Lancia Stratos make the poor Subaru look like shopping cart in the corners... Since then ILS I Love Stratos ;d
Lancia Stratos HF!!!! This is not only a super rally car for the times ...it is a state of the art of car architecture! in my opinion the best looking car ever, a gift from the famous car stylist Nuccio Bertone
Ford RS200, Peugeot 205T16, Renault 5T, Lancia 037, Lancia Delta S4, Metro 6R4. There's been lots of mid-engined rally-cars. Admittedly only the Stratos and the 037 were rear-wheel drive, the rest were all 4WD.
gandini was an employee discovered by bertone , as well as giugiaro now running his giugiaro/italdesign as carrozziere/stile. so sad today bertone is facing problems....
credo che adesso nessun pilota sarebbe così pazzo da guidare un'auto così su un percorso del genere a quelle velocità... erano pazzi... ed era quello il bello!
CrowJam Well, it would certainly be quite a difference, although I'm not sure which would be superior (with up-to-date tech, of course). The stratos has a loose back-end which makes it harder to control, but that looseness could also be used to gain a wider drifting angle to get through tight corners. I don't know a lot about AWD cars, but I have heard that they don't wan't to get wide.
why would you put music on this footage????? u have a lot of explaining. the sound of this car is the best music you will ever hear. should have left it on
The stupid thing about it is that the audio was from a Japanese television program, it's stupid that someone claimed it as theirs especially since it's so old. This is a rare piece of footage that you can't just go out and "buy", WMG is doing the most ridiculous things.
complimenti bellissimo video io ho montato un modellino in scala se ti va di vederli su RU-vid Antonello vicino stratos se ti va puoi lasciare un commento grazie
judging by the country you're from, I wouldn't expect a comment less than this. but, what's the point - just think of that "opinions and assholes" saying...
