Step-by-step installation of a automatic torque converter lockup kit into a Toyota Land Cruiser 200. Read the full article at: www.project200.com.au/torque-... The Richards lockup kit is available here (Affliliate link): bit.ly/TC-lockup
I love the way you make it look so simple. Your matter of fact tone of voice while cutting cables and rejoining them makes me laugh. I nearly required defibrillation just watching. I won’t do the work myself but I will be getting one of these fitted, that’s for sure.
Thanks for taking the time to prepare such informative and high quality videos. I appreciate someone who understands the importance of audio quality when videoing.
Many thanks for your informative videos on the LC200 and your inspiration to do the lock-up. The kit was even easier to install as Richard's Auto now supply it with the 3 way switch already wired up. Works great, can't wait to try it out when towing.
Have now been using the Richard's locker for over a year and also been been towing a caravan on a 10k trip. The locker performed great when towing with excellent engine response and fuel economy. The only negatives with the locker are: (1) the sensitivity of the relay occasionally trips at the 80kph lockup resulting in a P2759 error code which is easily cleared with the OBD Ultragauge (2) When towing in lockup mode you have to allow for any transmission downshifts especially on hills under load as they can be quite brutal. Aside from that the unit is fantastic for highway use.
Hi Gampi do you still have the vehicle? And how is it going , you say it downshifts hard ? I don’t like the sound of that has it been a big issue , cheers Mark
Hi I have a 2011 land cruiser 200 diesel manual transmission and I would like to change it to an automatic transmission....not the whole car only the gearbox to have the advantages of the 6 speeds. What's your advice? Is it possible ? Is it safe? What do I need? Here's another question..is it possible to fit a the 200 petrol engine gearbox on the 200 diesel car or it's impossible? Because where am from most of the parts that are available might be for petrol 200
Thanks for the video..... I'm trying to decide between a second-hand LC200, new Prado or new Patrol at the moment, so this looks like an expense that I need to bear in mind when weighing it all up. You have a new subscriber :) Cheers, Don (Dons Shed and Xplor Overland)
Dons Shed I have a 2015 Landcrusier, took a new patrol for a drive but they can’t guarantee we will get it by Xmas!! Sticking with the cruiser Landys are always solid cars
Riaz Roar I just ordered one, drives like a car not like a truck( Landcrusier) 75% of its driving is around a small town, does about 10 klms per day, diesel is getting clogged up big time, also for only $20,000 more we can get into a top of the line patrol rather than a 6 year old gxl with no safety features or creature comforts
Hi there is that ultra gauge any good if so would you recommend it for a Nissan patrol. Which model did you get and why. Luv your videos please keep them coming.
I love the Ultragauge and find it extremely useful on the 200. A much better option than the scan gauge II which I had previously. Compared to the SGII, the Ultragauge screen is bigger, it has multiple pages of 4, 6 or 8 gauges, it has user-settable alarms for most supported gauges and it has more trip computer functionality. I got the Ultragauge MX version as it offers ATF temperature monitoring, which the EM version does not. That said, I'm not sure what functionality it offers on a Patrol, and it depends on what information the vehicle outputs via the OBDII port.
You don't have to, and I didn't have a remap for several years. But I did add a transmission remap in 2019 and it works very well with the lockup kit. Remap is also from Richards Auto.
HI, I've installed the converter about a year ago now and works well when towing, the only thing I find annoying is that the 200 wont hold 6th gear at 95kms. It continually jumps to 5th and shoots the rev's up to 2500rmp. Anything I can do to hold 6th gear at this speed. Great video's by the way all very well done. Cheers
Driving in "S6" instead of "D" helps to hold 6th gear to lower speeds (down to about 90km/h). The only other possibility is to have a transmission remap performed. I haven't done this myself as yet, however I have heard some tuners are able to increase the load limits for 6th gear, meaning it holds it better.
Really considering this for my vdj200, but need to know if you guys found the limitation of locked AB60F TC above 50% throttle?? mine is chipped and make around 800 Nm at crank/engine side.
Im looking to do this on my 90 series with a wholesale kit and just wondering how you are supposed to use this while towing and hills. Is it designed to be switched on and off for hills?
Can't really comment on the Prado, as I'm not sure how strong the torque converter clutch is. Mine is on full-time at any speed over 75km/h and below ~50% throttle. I added the 50% throttle Hi mate, The lettering is normally cut out (so is the colour of your paint). Is that OK? for safety after I installed the Unichip, although I've never heard of anyone who's had a problem.
hello i am interesting one ithem i have toyota land cruiser 200 2008 year model gx with manual gear box and had spead limiter on the 180 k/hr and please help me to how to remove this spead limiter
Great video I have enjoyed every one, I am in the throws of nearly completing my 2017 Sahara Build and have taken on board much of your advice, I have 1 question in regards to the Torque Converter Lockup. you have now had it installed for 3 years so I assume you have done a few klms in that time, do you still feel the same about it today as then, the reason I ask is that I have been on the Richards Auto facebook page and a few guys have complained about getting error codes??
Yes, still extremely happy with it. You do occasionally get an error code. Perhaps every 6 months or so it comes up. The code (P2757) is saying that the ECU has detected the TC is locked when it thinks it shouldn't be. You can reset it with an ultragauge/scangauge etc.
4 years now ? So how is the lockup kit going , problems , codes etc ? Are you happy with it .. I would like to do this also . Was quoted 730 for the kit , but they recommended a third party instal to stop fault codes ... which is sort of disappointing because it seems very strait forward, and is l believe already expensive.. your thoughts ? Cheers Mark ..
Loving the lockup kit still. I've also just had a remap done (by Richards), which makes improvements to the change points and speed/load limits (particularly for 5th and 6th). Makes the vehicle hold 5th and 6th much better on the highway. It also changes the parameters for the fault codes, so stops the lockup kit causing them. The fault codes are otherwise an occasional side effect of any lockup kit. I used to get one maybe every 6 months, but reset using an Ultragauge. I'll update the web article with the remap info in the next month or so.
This one is specific to the 200. I believe Richards also make one for the Prado. I have heard of other companies making similar products for various other vehicles. You'd probably just gave to zGoogle your car model plus 'torque converter lockup kit', or something like that.
Thanks for the feedback! Just get the ultragauge direct from the US. Shipping is only $20 or so, and it will arrive in a week. Make sure you get the MX version to get the ATF temperatures, as the EM version doesn't show them.
They don't interfere with each other at all, as the Unichip doesn't make any changes to the TC lockup functionality. When I installed the Unichip, I had the installer create a custom output which only provides earth when throttle is below 50%. I use that output to disable the TC lockup, just as a safety in case the lockup clutch isn't strong enough to take the increased power that comes from the Unichip.
@@mark2382 To the best of my knowledge, yes it is strong enough with standard power and torque. I never had an issue, and I have never heard of anyone having an issue. However, as with any mod to the driveline, it pays to be cautious. You'd be best to confirm with Richards as to whether they've ever heard of any problems, as they would deal with a lot of vehicles.
An old video but still worth asking. I'm considering richards lockup kit, but I barely do any towing. So my questions to smarter guys is it worth installing just for highway driving?
The fuel economy benefits are less than with towing, but I still find it much nicer to drive with the kit when not towing. It's really good in combination with their transmission remap, as it brings the engagement speed of 6th gear down to 93km/h under light throttle. So works really well when not towing.
@@Axxept555 No, it's either TC-lock only, or both. You can't do the trans remap without the lockup kit as it would cause the Auto fluid to get too hot, as the box would change to 6th at ~93 but not lock the TC, generating more heat.
+Frank Martinez You can't access the actual torque converter without removing the gearbox or engine. It sits between the two, and transmits the power from engine to gearbox through hydraulic fluid. Installing this kit doesn't require access to the TC though. It controls the TC clutch by tapping into the ECU.
+Jason Wilkinson No. Improvements when towing are at least as good though. I haven't done a side-by-side, but would estimate the gains to be 15-20% at highway speeds.
just a a suggestion, its a 70k vehicle at least use heat shrink on those joints not tape, even better use dual wall heat shrink with glue in it, keeps any moisture out for good, its only 4.95$ a metre at jaycar
It's not shown in the video Blair, but the individual wires are heatshrinked, then the bundle is taped together over the top. There is one section of the video (At 4:40) where you can see some green heatshrink sitting on the wire as it's soldered. And yes, Jaycar is the place to get it!
+Australian Images Um not being picky but you have no heat shrink at 2:05 on 4 joints and you actually say "solder and individually tape each wire", that was more what I meant.
No worries. Just for clarification, the individual wires in that case are actually heatshrinked, but you can't see it as it's sitting back along the wires leading to the relays to keep it away from the soldering heat. Then the bundle is taped. It's true I should have mentioned the heatshrink instead of just saying to tape individually, then the bundle. My point was that the wires needed to be insulated from each other, then retape the bundle back together. I can't change the video, but I'll update the webpage to reflect that info.
There is actually heatshrink on the individual wires, with the bunch taped up. That step's not shown in the video, but is listed on the website. You can see some heatshrink at 4:38 in the video.
@@austimages sweet, i was worried there for a sec. Seems like a great mod for those towing. I have been eyeing it off for myself, but unsure if there is really much cost benefit, mainly as I have quite a light camper trailer. Going to do some more research. cheers
When the TC is locked, gear changes are more noticeable, as (very slightly) is engine vibration. I don't find these to be even slightly annoying, but it would seem that Toyota place NVH above all other considerations! I have not experienced any other 'disadvantages'.
