Aussie here… yes you can turbo the 1HZ but not worth it imo. Some people just slap a turbo on and blow holes thru the top of their pistons… if you go that route there are dedicated rebuild kits that include ceramic top piston’s, 1HD-T conrods, larger gudgeons, etc, and then you have the cost of the rebuild itself. Far simpler to sell the stock 1HZ and use that money (including the cost of the rebuild and the kit) and for the same price buy a 1HD-T or a 1HD-FT that was actually engineered to give you the results you’re chasing. Trying to do things on the cheap ends up costing you twice as much in the long run 🙂
very true. I feel the 1HZ is fine... sure anyone wants more power, but to me I would rather keep the reliability. It still cruises at 80mph (125kms) at 2200 rpms, just takes time to get there.
Wow love to see the cruisers all together and so many at one place Looking forward to your comparison vid on defender with the 73. Since you are a cruiser guy hope it'll be not toyota biased review.
For a video teaser... The 4 cyl Turbo diesel 300TDI in the Defender, is incredibly surprising, faster and peppier than the 1HZ, or even a 12HT. However, build quality, thr LC leaves the Defender in the dust... But the Defender is much more reliable than Land rover products after it (Discos, RR etc.. ) Land Rover was Lamd Rover back then, bur since changed ownership hands too many times.
Hello just found your channel. Been a Toyota fan all my life and have had a couple 4 runners in the past. 1985 and a 1999. Now I'm another bucket list rig. Found a 1994 with triple lockers and in decent shape 250k miles. Most stock except upgraded bumper and light bar. Looking forward to building this rig up and making it my own.
awesome! You are graduating to the ultimate with an 80! And with 94, you dont have to worry about airbags, and you still have the 212hp 24 valve inline 6.
@@CruisingTheLand Been looking for a few months. I live in Redding CA. Going to fly to Portland next week and meet the seller, he lives in Southern Washington. Yes I really off-road, so didn't really want to deal with the air bags.
Great vid. I have a 75 series with the 2H and a big snail. The 12HT was just the turbo version of the 2H but obviously DI instead of IDI which means you can swap them into the 75 easy as because the block was the same so same engine mounts and gearbox but id say the 2H can handle a turbo way better than a 1HZ just due to being older so was made stronger and not made to be light and more efficient like the 1HZ and the 2H being OHV opposed to the 1HZ being SOHC it has less power but has more torque at lower RPM (especially with a turbo) but great to see my favourite engine over in the states, bit hard to find a 12HT in good condition over here in Australia, i may be a little jealous 😆
70series always came with barn doors from what i have read and study but 60, 80, 100 and 105 came with the tailgate doors and also barn doors. btw the high roof is called sahara
I currently have an H motor, a 1HZ, an original B and a 3L, respectively in a HJ45, HZJ70, BJ40 and the newest to the collection, a 1997 Hilux LN106...last year with the solid front axle. I agree with all the info regarding the 1hz, not the fastest motor but a serious off road workhorse that will last longer that the vehicle itself! I would love to swap in a 12HT to any future HJ45 build, the Aussies seem to know what works!
@@CruisingTheLand Currently in Costa Rica working on my land cruiser addiction, but will be back in SoCal in July. I have a built Suzuki Samurai I can toss into the race...but it would be flat towed behind my 1991 Econoline 350 7.3 IDI camper van to make it competitive!! LOL
I own a HDJ80 1996 with the 1HDFT which I am contemplating to switch out for a HJ61 with the 12HT. Also looking for to install an intercooler, up the injectors to +30, getting a 3 inch exhaust and finally mounting a beefed up Gturbo. My HDJ80 is stock so I think that the HJ61 will be quick enough after these mods. Probably quicker as well due the lower curb weight.
I would not turbo the 1HZ unless you use turbo pistons...the stock ones are thin above the top ring...but you can compound the 12ht and make a weapon....
Your wrong on the HJ means JDM, HJ means it has the Diesel motor, FJ means it’s petrol. And reading some of the comments in this video, there’s nothing wrong with putting a turbo on the 1HZ most people here in Australia slap a turbo on and they will keep going no dramas. I have builds heaps of big power turbo 1HZ’s with no problems, the best diesel motor Toyota built is the 1HD-FTE
@@CruisingTheLand if it’s done right you won’t have a problem, heat is the killer which is caused by over fuelling, heaps of guys run 25+ Psi of boost at a stock 1HZ and she will chop it all day
It is a 1997 FXJ80, 242k miles California car, rust free Has Dobinson lift, Ironman front bar and upper/lower control arms, ARB lockers and compressor, 4.88s, 35s, and much more. 29k
yes, I had a FJ62 with the 3FE... and its a slug. The FZJ80 does well, but the 1HD-FT seems to pull up a steep grade hill with more ease compared to the FZJ, without kicking down a gear... holds speed (70mph) whereas the FZJ feels like its struggling and losing power... I am talking steep...
@@CruisingTheLand I can believe that. Besides, we don't have land cruisers for speed! We have them because where they can go and the reliability. I live in Colombia and it's just a old Toyota heaven. Old 40-80s everywhere.
@@CruisingTheLandit has glow plugs you can see them in the video, it’s just that you don’t need to glow them in warm weather, in really cold climates you may need to glow them twice
Does anyone in America know who I could use as an importer for Left hand drive vehicles 25 years and older ? I'd prefer to use an import service than go to a port and pick it up myself . I live in the Midwest . No time for that .
Not getting diesels really shows....not all are 24v and a few other just made up comments I noticed too.....saying a 1hz is like a h and 2h it ridiculous....completely different motor inlet and exhaust are opposite to start with....and saying 3rd row didn't start till the 80 series and also saying bloke put a 12ht in 80s well they came factory it's called a hj80 the hzj80 was a 1hz
The HZJ73 is all original, except for the lift/tires and front Bumper. These are all things that can be reversed and put bacl to OEM spec. However, I much prefer the 73 lifted, completely changes the vehicle and its offroad capability. I dont modify the mechanical parts (engine, turbo, radiator etc...) just suspensions. But there is a reason on higher mileage Landcruisers that when shocks go, people upgrade to OME or others... because its better. For instance, put King Shocks on my 80 Diesel. But Kings would make any vehicle superior to Factory. Only vehicle I have that is heavily modified is my FJ40... It has 80 rear axle, 60 front axle, V8 Vortec, Orion transfer case, SM420 trans etc .. but it is a crawler.
@@CruisingTheLand 1fz 4.5 petrol and the 1hz 4.2 diesel. No turbo diesel options at all, kinda sad for Toyota's last true land cruiser still being solid axle front and rear
@@CruisingTheLandundoubtedly way more powerful the 12H-T but in case of an issue (which will always happen), much less simple to fix, electronic injection pump, more likely to wrong in the long run.
The 1HD-FT 24 valve engines are reliable and sought after. Any 80 manual would be amazing. In the US we only got automatic, and gas FJ80 ans FZJ80s. So diesel is a big deal, as well as manual. If you can drive manual, RHD is easy and 2nd nature.
@Cruising The Land cool. I like the 70 series more. Those 37" don't look big on it at all . Weird. I have a 2001 tacoma those would be like monster truck tires on it .
You should check out my 80 series videos.. I compare to 60, and compare to 100. I also do a diesel 80 vs gas 80.. They are all on my channel. Or search 80 vs 60 Landcruiser and you will see it.
