I' m from Brazil, and as you must know there are many poor people here. You with your videos show us that is possible to have a aquarium and be happy without a lot of money. Less is more. Congratulation, Michael.
I been using this moss and my betta fish loved them and the water stays immaculate for a longer period of time, I am also been see the older fish more happy with more energy in the way the swim🦈
I've been growing a sample of land moss underwater since December when I saw your video. Over time I trimmed back the land growth and only kept the new aquatic growth. Currently I have the mass of only aquatic growth in a mason jar and I change the water when it gets dirty looking. It looks like a giant ball of green string. I've also noticed that some of the moss strings have started branching which I did not observe prior.
Mike I love your videos and all the info you share. I have bettas and the moss works great in their tanks, I get a couple extra days out of their water before I do water changes.
Hey! I've been searching for that type of info too!! Instead, I found people who share knowledge with me and that is how you found me :) It makes me happy! All the best on your new adventure!
Great video Michael, I have been doing this for a while now, with the jar, I don't know why I haven't mentioned it to you, sorry. I see you got your ghost shrimp. And she's going to have babies, don't forget to add the aquarium salt we discussed previously
Thank you very much Brenda! Never mind little things - it is hard to keep in mind things we accustomed to do. We do it assuming that everyone knows and does it too. He-he, slave of habits we are ;)
Careful with the glass jar! I had one break in my hand and cut the tendons, nerve and an artery in my right middle finger! I am an artist, this truly a nightmarefor me. Luckly I didn't lose the finger but my left hand is now stronger than my right so please be careful ♡
Thanks for the video! But I’m trying to create an aquatic ecosystem and I wondered if it would be possible if I just used this moss and aquatic species would begin o appear even without actually adding them. What do you think? Would it be successful or possible? Or would I need actual aquatic plants?
It is possible and doable to make aquatic ecosystem with land moss growing underwater. Though, I prefer to use two or more different types of plants (fast and slow growing) in my setups along with land plants growing with roots in water. This is so far the most successful sustainable aquarium gardens (aquatic ecosystem if you whish) I was able to create and keep on going for years. You can see examples on this playlist: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-upCNuWFQWeA.html All the best on your adventure!
Thank you for the question! It depends...I've done it from 1 week to about 6 months period, but usually it's about 1 month. I setup aquariums in advance and usually have 2-3 are ready for any emergency. Look through videos on this playlist to see exact time and what and how I set up aquariums: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bwGmmWMlRCw.html All the best!
Mosquitos lay eggs only if they can get access to the water surface. So, you can reduce this problem greatly by covering your aquariums. I use planters on top of the aquariums to reduce water evaporation and etc. Flying insects are not on my farming for feeding fish list or critters :)
@@reymartbara2206 That should prevent mosquitos from laying eggs. You will still have to add water rather frequently - that is not a big problem if you have 1-2 aquariums. With a dozen aquariums or so as I have - planters is the way to go to tackle water evaporation and mosquitos ;)
Mosquitos like to lay their eggs in standing water. You can put an air line into the jar to circulate the water. It doesn't need to be full blast, like a few bubbles per second.
I have bunch of whatever moss on my trees. I just bought a 10g tank with no plants in it. So, you suggest to harvest moss, rinse it in a jar, keep it in a jar for one week, then if everything is ok, tie it to a rock and put it in my fish tank?
It is one way you can do it. Though, I would give moss a couple weeks or more before moving it in the main aquarium. Attaching moss to a rock, driftwood or anything else is a good option in aquariums with water flow or in aquariums with newts and such- just to keep it in place. I often let it move around
Hi, So about 11days passed. Moss are doing fine but they don't grow at all. I have about a palm size moss in a container and also put a quarter size moss in the fish tank directly from day1. They are not dying but they are not growing at all. Other plants grew few CMs but moss is the same. I don't think it will help any way in form if they are not growing. I am thinking of using different plants for this matter. Any thoughts or suggestions?
It's normal for mosses and any other plants to go slower during adaption period or when the season changes. It may grow faster when days get longer (more light promotes growth). Using different plants is beneficial for aquariums. I always put at least two different types of aquatic plants in my aquariums. One is fast growing and one is slow growing. And I keep terrestrial plants growing with roots in my aquariums. Plants do very well filtering nutrition dissolved in water.
u cover the jar it not need air? i open the cover of plastic bowl it makes difference? & what about smell first it has bad smell after sometime bad smell disapper yes?
Thank you for the question! Indeed, I cove the jar, but it is not sealed. The air still gets access in and out of the jar. I do it in this way to reduce water evaporation. It makes a big difference for the matter of how often you will need to add water into the jar. In this regards you may want to check videos on this playlist: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M30JoD5anmI.html The bad smell is one of the first signs of something getting spoiled. Usually I wash again thoroughly smelly sample of moss to prevent rotting. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Hello Michael! I live right next to a small creek, in that creek there is some plants that looks almost like guppy grass! I have taken home some samples a couple of times but ive always also got some parasites and larvaes whith them to, even though iI clean them heavily, and i dont really want all thease things again in my aquarium. Do you know any way to get rid of all parasites and such stuff from those plants. I really want to keep them!
You could always try a bleach dip or quarantine new plants for a while and remove any insect larva or snails you see. For the bleach solution, Mix 1 part bleach to 19 parts water, this creates a 5% bleach solution. Only let it soak for a few minutes bleach is strong. Thoroughly rinse after the soak. There are many stipulations, be sure to read over this link before trying. www.aquariumplants.com/Articles.asp?ID=267 Also be sure to read this link on bleach safety. www.msdsonline.com/2014/02/12/bleach-sodium-hypochlorite-safety-tips-bleach-safety-instruction/ Remember to always be careful when working with bleach it is a chemical and should be treated as one. This works well when buying plants or collecting them from nature. It kills parasites, snail eggs, and algae. Hope this helps Rose
Thank you for the question! The way I go about such thing is...I described it in couple videos, this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5v6OelF1oeU.html There is bullet prove way to do it at home. Get the cleanest sample possible. Keep it in separate nursery aquarium. Change water, remove all critter you may see for couple weeks or so. Then add some unwanted fish or whatever aquatic pets you keep to see how they react. Keep and possibly breed them in this separated aquarium. If they survive and breed without problem, then you know that the sample is clean and safe - though, there is always a chance of something hibernating and etc. All the best!
Most plants on our planet are toxic in one way or another to people. As for the fish...well, there is hardly any studies done about it. So, you can be the first one to learn about it ;) My guppies are fine with moss shown in this video. Some of my friends have similar moss growing in aquariums with gold fish.
There are many thousands different types of mosses. I tried less than a dozen so far. Some do not grow at all, some grow slow, some grow fast, some stay alive for almost an year without growing any noticeably. Check videos on this playlist for all mosses that grow in my aquariums (more coming ;) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5zJN7hyjzhY.html All the best!

Hello? I just found this and would love to try it in my aquarium. I don't know what kind of moss I picked up but hopefully they do well... one looks more like that one in the jar you washed, and one was smoother in appearance and feels like velvet to the touch. They're in separate jars at the moment. How long do I keep them in a jar for before placing them in the tank? Thank you.
@@fs4538 :) It's actually better to give the moss more time...hmm...until you see new growings. And the experience could be different based on many factors. I have more videos about growing land mosses underwater on this playlist: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bK_gJD6lPIg.html There are two videos that I would recommend to check the most. All the best on your adventure!
Thank you for the question! Yes you can. As a matter of fact, I initially test all new things (including moss, plants, critters and etc. brought from wild or from pet store) in breeding tanks or in tanks with newborn fish. It is the safest way to check everything new without compromising your main aquarium. All the best!

Live moss growing in aquariums is good in the same way any aquatic mosses and plants are. It serves as hiding place for small fish, as food for fish and critters, it helps to keep water clean (by consuming dissolved in water waste), esthetic purpose, and etc. And it is available locally everywhere people live - basically free discovery adventure for everyone in the hobby.
It lives all year around in my settings. I have it growing underwater in some of my aquariums for a couple years as of now. All the best on your adventure!
I've never tried to tell you for sure. Though, I tried and it works with seashells, different types of gravel or without it at all. So, most likely it would work with white sand too ;) All the best!
How long did it take for your sample to die? Also, we may have different ideas what dead moos looks like ;) Just to be clear about it, you can see in this video what dead moss looks like: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mCHPSl90VYo.html And then check this video to compare what is not yet dead moss looks like and what you can do about it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DWWGfuozMUk.html All the best!
@@elainebrooks2599 Moss does not need soil for surviving - it does not have roots. Also, tiening moss to any object would anchor it that useful for design purpose.
@@atikurpranto3190 I have never tried to breed river shrimp to tell you for sure. Though, I think they should breed in an aquarium with right care. All the best on your adventure!
Moss grow underwater continuously all year around, year after year. As all alive the old bottom parts eventually die out giving space to the new growth on the top. Or you can simply remove/trim off the bottom parts before it dies.
I don't really get why you always use landmoss, you could also buy a piece of java moss and just grow it, Java moss will also grow a lot faster. Nice video's by the way.
Thank you! I have 2 or more different type of plants in each of my aquariums: aquatic plants, terrestrial plants and mosses. There is a world of new possibilities with land plants/ mosses growing underwater - I deem it is very interesting to explore.
