Hi Tony. We were neighbours ( Pieter and Joyce with our Carthago) at camping Costa Do Vizier at Porto Covo in Portugal around Februari. Nice to see that you have your Land Rover ready for the big trip around the World. We will follow your trip with great interest! Wish you both all the best! Regards! Pieter and Joyce
Fantastic, i have a 300tdi in my '95 110. Amazing how they keep going. Unbeknown to me i had a crack in the head which let water in to the no4 cylinder intake, when i cranked it one day it went bang and bent a conrod! Amazingly it still ran! Was just a bit down on power. I replaced the Conrod and hopefully its good for another 200 thousand miles! Great vehicle you have!
Totally with you over choice of engine. Having spoken to Foley’s many years ago it seemed like the obvious choice and it remains so. By the way that’s an great looking vehicle you have there.
Nice video , I have a 98 300tdi ,pride of the British Army and the Crankshaft broke after 147k miles!!!! Now replaced the engine with a 96 that’s done 100k and praying for better luck
Had the replacement fitted plus timing belt, clutch rear main etc etc Goes well but drips oil from seam between bell housing and block Also lots of white smoke on start up. Had new injectors , glow plugs plus there is a knock that sounds tappety but is not. The engine came from a rolled Landie Beginning to wish I’d bought Toyota!!!!!!
haha i just watched this having no idea who you were I'm afraid but then at the end saw the rear door and immediately recognised it, you passed me in my D90 dormobile camper last month 10th may at 7:38 southbound on the M25 lol iv got a picture of you side profile 6x6 XD lovely rig
I have 300tdi in my 1987 90.....strange I never fitted viscous fan, only manual electric fan, never needed to use it...but then I guess its a little 90 not a heavier 110...? never had overheating issues?
I have a 300TDI myself, and recently had to have a new high pressure diesel pump fitted as the apparently contaminated fuel in Lesotho reduced the lubricating effect of the diesel. I mention this because you said these engines would run on paraffin. I wouldn't recommend this for the above reason.
They will run on any oil based fuel but it must be clean. It's when you get diesel with water in it is what does the damage as not all the water will sit in the bottom of the filter also extremely fine sand can pass through as I have experienced in North Africa.
Can't fault your choice of powerplant. Looks like it came from a Disco? BTW all of the viscous fans on our 200tdi seize up for some reason - but that's not really a bad thing to default to!
Indeed, very good to hear that this is your engine of choice.. I have just replaced a Puma 2.4 with a 300Tdi rebuilt at home. Did you stick with the standard vacuum pump or did you modify?
It is the most reliable engine land rover used. They all suffer with oil leaks but but that's the nature of the beast. All the best with the build Tony
