Great video, very clear and concise, I can see JLR making your videos a workshop reference for their dealerships of "how to install a Defender winch without damaging the loom".. :-)
Really enjoying the longer videos. Better to over engineer than under engineer . What i like about your videos is that you are showing as a layman and not a so called professional. You show your mistakes which anyone can do. Which greatly helps when someone comes to fit their own winch. As an engineer ( now retired ) I find it interesting how people interpret instruction . Distinguishing left and right for instance. Simple eh. But is it as you look at the car or if you are sitting in the car. Your suggestions for improvement are valid and I do hope Land Rover take it onboard. Keep the videos coming and good luck.
You are doing way better and more job than any dealer right now as far as i know, brave thing beacause apart of the car to be "new", the try and catch (sucess - errors) you are really good, and show us more than I can even imagined.
Hi Mike... is starting to get more tricky now... JLR are telling me to cut connectors off the loom and cut wires in the fusebox..... seems crazy so my have to design my own method.... studying the wiring diagrams tonight "for fun"
Another great video. Although you have removed the flaps the cleaning problem will still be present for those who do not fit a winch so your idea of a cleaning mode via the app would be a very good thing. Looking forward to tomorrow’s episode!
Phew!!!...What a job but then Simon, your bursting enthusiasm carries you and Tylor through all the obstacles...but tomorrow...does the loom..loom?? Worrying stuff..if something goes POP is Mr Skywalker ready to provide STIG 2??? It’s a cliffhanger!...rest well...tomorrow is a challenging day!!! Good work men!!😀😀😀😀😀Richard.
Excellent videos - thanks. Notes as I watch - you will STILL need the open-flap option for vehicles without a winch, so they can pressure clean it properly. So PLEASE still ask Mr. Skywalker for this. I am surprised that JLR dont supply a pre-cut L633-W as part of the winch kit - especially as there is precision cutting involved - it would also save a lot of time for the dealer for a dealer fit (saving probably bore in time than the L633-W would cost). Your microphone problem ..... this is my area of expertise - make a small loop in the cable and trap it behind the mic. clip - this will decouple the cable from the microphone and prevent the rustling noises from the cable getting to the microphone (this is what all the broadcast sound engineers do when fitting people with a radiomic.) - I hope this helps. Great - now I wait for the next video.
Hi John - i think the Mic was rubbing on my unshaven chin so i moved it down my shirt. What do you think of the new camera / mic... ? Thanks for the tip !
Simon - really enjoy your videos, especially as I am a 2020 Defender owner too however, for the love of god ... get a workbench solid wooden table instead of that glass number. I'm just waiting for the day something goes straight through it!!! Keep up the great work!
Yes its just a matter of time - in the defence of my super glass tables... there are 2 of them... they do give a sort of back lighting when i have parts on them making the parts on the table easier to see.
Can see how JLR can justify the price of these now, they do look plenty skookum and a nice looking kit. No way could I have a dealer fit it though that would be all the fun! Loving watching these can’t wait for the next one!!
I think the last winch i fitted to a series 3 took about 40mts all wired up, this look's a total ball ache, can only imagine the time/expence if you wanted bull bar's/diff guards/rock sliders fitted, plus the fact the warrantee would of run out by the time you'd finished doing it😤.!!
Copper grease isn’t the best thing for aluminium due to galvanic corrosion. I’d recommend using molybdenum paste instead. Great vids by the way, I’m locked in a hotel room in Angola for 2 weeks quarantine so I’m watching them all back to back.
Yes I could actually do a whole video on the subject of ads on RU-vid... I wanted to have no adverts as we run a business selling parts and this should be our focus but RU-vid did not promote my videos when i had no adverts... I switch ads on for a trial and our exposure doubled overnight, so it makes sense to have the adverts... but we have to opt out of the midroll adverts every time after upload...
I'm really enjoying your videos - the new camera is working very well. I've got a white P300 110 S over here in the Southeastern USA so I'm following your adventures closely.
@@L663 I wonder whether the American dealer did actually cut through a loom or whether they are using it as an excuse to cover for another major fault, like another 'check engine' warning light or dead infotainment system, like they had on the first one? I just can't see how or why they would cut a loom from your very detailed video.
@@hedydd2 After watching Simon fit this kit, I am wondering the same, there is no cutting on the body that we've seen yet. Maybe the wiring of the winch will reveal all?
Hi 🙋♂️ good 😌 hard working I enjoyed this 2nd part as well you have done ✅ really good step by step for people to get a chance to upgrade without going to garage. Thanks 🙏 🙏
Great videos guys- how many hours do you think a shop should take to complete this job? I am taking mine in soon for the install. Also, did you ever get an answer from LR about what part numbers are needed- The only part number that comes up for a search of Winch Mounting Kit is VPLEP0427? Thanks!
Great video guys. It would be handy to know the hole pattern dimensions for the winch mount so that alternative winch units might be fitted please. I do want to fit a winch to mine Defender but would never have a Warn Winch. Cheers Non Stick Nick.
Good work chaps... Really coming together and looking very robust.. Will be interested in how much the winch kit would be to purchase from landrover, plus how much they quote to fit it vs do it your self.. I.e hours, hassle and saving. Could you add this into the last vid of this series please Simon..
Thank you for your videos! LR requires the cooling active grille to be striped down when installing the winch, however I see you did not do it. Any reason behind it?
A powered hacksaw like the Milwaukee Hackzall would make short work of any panel cutting, any metal sheets or bars and wood of all kinds. Just as good as that tool shown but more versatile.
@@L663 I find I use it almost as much as a drill. If you have a battery system already, that brand might have a similar saw. But the Milwaukee 18V is the best ;-)
OMG I'm the first to comment!!!!! Gosh I don't know what to say.....errrr... love your videos. Managed to 44mpg from my 2.0 deisel 2020 defender today on a motorway run. But school runs are awful...I wonder if that can be improved?
Hi 44 MPG has got to be good... I need to get some mileage on mine but poor old STIG has either been in being repaired or pulled apart over the last few weeks !
Hi, that was the best ever mpg. On just daily run around it’s averaging 28mpg and I’m driving like my grandma definitely worth looking in to how it can be improved 😪 still love it though!
You shouldn't put copper grease on aluminium, dissimilar metals, effectively creating a battery. Electrolytic corrosion. If you wish you put something on there a weak thread lock will create an isolation barrier.
Interesting point... but the inserts that had the threads in the aluminium cans were steel so we are OK but its a good point to make... although i am not sure the copper and ally would be an issue... steel and ally probably more of an issue ?
@@L663 I really enjoy your videos so keep them coming but does your mechanical engineering qualification help with the point that you should change the torque when doing up bolts with anti seize on? People seem to have opposite strong opinions on that!
@@mattsewell8949 So here are my thoughts...anti seize will reduce friction... yes... but friction only happens when you have movement... when the final torque is reached the nut is not really spinning or moving so there is no real impact of friction on the torque setting..... Simon J BEng CEng Eur Ing MiMechE...
Now,now, you really must believe in miracles, do you really expect land rover to let you fit an aftermarket product that (actually work's) lol, for probably half the price without them having the privalidge of screwing you for a king's ransom and after watching this video hopefully be able to fit it without turning your truck into a right off😂,if i was you I'd keep the winch and run from the car, probably easier to bolt it to the space shuttle😂.!!
Which is the right hand side and which is the left hand side as you face the front of the car. Is the right hand side the same as the off side and the near side the same as the left
at 26:17 - I see the Disco 3 sagging close to the floor. Is that what happens when the air suspension 'deflates'? does it fill up again when you start the car?
Yes the D3 has been left to one side as we have had to reduce workshop staff to just the 2 of us ( trying to reduce risk of covid etc ). She will re-inflate when we start her again !
You labelled the brackets L and R. I guess L is for Land, and R is for Rover. Otherwise why would you offer up the one labelled R to the left-hand-side of the vehicle at 15:24? 8-) Ok at 33:43 you try and wiggle-out, but I am not convinced 8-)
JRA will not be offering the winch on Australian delvered vehicles....one of the worlds biggest markets for proper off road vehicles. Why you may ask? Its becuase the front airbags will not work with one fitted. You have been warned. That prevents it from being registered. Its a stuff up of epic proportions.
You’ll be waiting. ARB, TJM, Ironman, etc have no plans to make anything for the Defender. They have nothing specific for the rest of the LR range either so I can’t see them producing anything. The complexity of design and the potential profit from smaller sales means it won’t take off.
Sorry, but this is seriously too bloody hard. It is meant to go offroad! It is only a winch for God's sake. How are ARB/TJM or any independent 4WD shop going to be able to fit a bullbar and a winch to this thing?
They’re not. None of them have any plans to make anything specific for the Defender, they don’t have anything for the rest of the LR range either. LR have made a car that is excellent off road rather than a 4wd that is excellent on road. It is going to be difficult and expensive to customise this vehicle for off road use.
WINCHES Remote Control Electric Winch (1) VPLEP0426 £3,162 Winch Mounting Kit (1) (2) Air Suspension VPLEWMT001 £2,412 Winch Accessory Kit STC53202 £352 Prices for supply and fit according to JLR accessories brochure. Don't know if there is a difference between standard coil or air suspension but would doubt it. @@L663 Yea, like o moving version of the older Defender grill finns... but less flimsy. Been waiting to do it on my series but the grill scape is a bit to complex.
Dear Lord, send Land Rover some engineers with common sense and a belief in Keep It Simple Stupid! I can install a winch in a couple of hours on a Jeep Wrangler. The Defender is so ridiculously over engineered it is nearly impossible to work on.
It also scores 1 star in crash test ratings. I’m guessing LR didn’t make this complicated for the sake of it - not least because it’d cost them more to manufacture. Old Defender and Wrangler definitely much simpler to work on (and more satisfying) but they have their limitations WRT modern standards.
