Pfewf! It's a thorny subject, but today we get into the values of classic Land Rover Defenders, look at where they've come from and, more importantly, where they're going. With the escalation in values over the last handful of years, is a Defender still a good investment?

Thanks from the UK. I’m under pressure from my Wife to cut back on my vehicles ...... giving me ultimatum of selling 911 or TDCI Defender 90 ☹️. I’m wondering if I can sell her on eBay 😐

Great video! Thanks Paul. I bought a 2006 Defender TD5 for (in direct exchange value) for $12500 a year ago and it is already significantly increased in value. Of course, mine is not a classic car but, even in South Africa where there is no shortage of Defenders it is one of the rare 6 seater 90s still in great condition and should prove to continue to hold its value. Interestingly, there are also quite a few restorers in South Africa whose primary market is the US. Our favourably low exchange rate to the Dollar and relatively cheap workforce makes our market an attractive market for this, I guess.

I'm a huge fan of the Disco 2. I had one in the states, in Giverny Green, and loved every second of driving it. Here one of my dailies is a Discovery 1 200Tdi in Ardennes Green, but I think I'll replace it soon with a Discovery 2 300 Tdi. Such great all-around vehicles. Good off road, comfortable on road, great for family use... I love the Disco. Thanks for the note!

Helpful video. I am planning on acquiring a Series III and restore it or a Defender and keep it mostly as it is. It's a tough decision because I don't know what vehicle will give me more satisfaction, I wonder if a Defender has the effect series trucks have of being unable to drive it without a smile on your face.

A Defender is categorically more "usable." Which is to say more refined, more comfortable, easier to drive, and with a performance envelope that allows highway cruising on modern roadways. So if you want a car you can drive all the time, pretty much anywhere, then a Defender is really the only choice. And that, to me, is the biggest selling point for a Defender, because they are also more complicated and at least double the price of a comparable Series III. The big selling point for the Series III is its impossible charm and romantic, cheerful shape. A Series III is just... too cool for school. And when you drive one you know you're driving something vintage and trippy. It's loud and slow and bouncy, and (let's face it) kinda ridiculous in a modern context. But that's what makes them so fun to own. Like a homemade go-kart for grownups. And they're half the price and simple to work on, and very rugged. But will you want to drive it every day? No and HELL no. A Series III is a great... third car. I take mine when I go surfing with my boys, or when I feel like heading up into the mountains for a picnic or something. But when I need to run errands or pick someone up at the airport, or commute to work in the pouring rain? I'm not often reaching for the Series III keys, believe me. A Defender is still a lousy SUV, and quite, ahem... "agricultural" to drive by modern standards, but it CAN be used more like a normal car. A Series III really can't. That said, Series Land Rover are my passion. I can't get enough of them. Defenders don't really light my fire in the same way. Not personally, anyway.

@@paulmisencik Thanks for the info. I will probably end up leaning towards the Series III option because the prices for the Defenders have become absurd, paying around 25'000 Euros for a truck with 250'000 KM on it just makes me feel stupid. I'm not sure how reliable Ford puma engines, TD5's or 300TDI's are with all the electronics and 250'000 KM on them.

I think Santanas Series 88 and 109 will be an excellent investment in 10 years. just seing how Northamericans are importing them, also Germans, and other countries are coming to Spain to buy them cheap...Not so long ago you could find some santanas in every little town in Spain for 1000 eur. The value has increased, of course, but there is still a good gap between actual price and future value.
