Very cool video and a great cause. I have to say that the LR3 in my opinion is just so underrated. Literally all he did was put on lift rods and tires and he was able to do all of that. Most trucks you would need to purchase suspension front and rear bumpers and armor. I really love the LR3. I have an 05 with the HD package which comes with the electronica rear locking differential. And I have to say with that model you do not need to spend the wheels it’s simply rolls over everything

Great video. I did the spider 2 years ago with my '12 LR/Disco 4 running 20psi on the waterfall. Had 2 other Land Rovers on that trip a "08 LR3 and an '04 Disco2, good time had by all. Lucky 8 has the save your ass "SYA" kit I would recommend getting for your air spring LR3. As you've already discovered, running off-road height means stiffer shocks. The SYA is a steel spacer between the shock and the frame. The combination of SYA + J-rods puts your shocks pressure back to stock while still giving you the 3" lift. The 2 biggest advantages to this setup is, 1) softer ride 2) raises bump stops 3" so your tires aren't stuck up in the wells in the event of an airbag failure. With the softer ride, you'll get less wheel bounce in rock crawl while the terrain response system is trying figuring out everything. I was aired down, in low range, on rock crawl settings and gave it steady moderate throttle and walked right up. If you lift off the throttle the terrain response system kind of starts all over. You can get the limiting straps with that kit also so you don't bind up your CV's. The guys are going to love driving "Junior".

I have a rear locker in my LR3 (Discovery 3) and it's amazing. Plus the payload capacity with all your gear and people is nearly twice the 4 door Jeeps. Great video.

Nice, what a score with the rear locker! We’ve debated putting in the ARB aftermarket but we’ve been doing well without... for more. Sure we’re going to need it at some point and it would help negotiate some obstacles much easier. And you’re exactly right on the payload and space, it’s a beast!

Thank you very much! If interested in an LR3 I think you’ll enjoy the fins and things video and the entire air vs coil series. We have 3x LR3’s and they’re all going strong. Two of them are almost at 200k miles. We love all brands of vehicles but I think the biggest thing you’ll enjoy with the LR3 over the 4Runner is how much room you’ll have and the commanding view. Give one a test drive and let us know what you think!

@@MilitaryMobility thanks for the info! I'll definitely check out the Fins video, I'm familiar with that trail, I ran it in a rented JK Rubicon when I was there mountain biking a few years back. I went to an off-roading event in Vermont a few months back, the organizer is a Rover guy and pretty much sold me on the LR3 as a 4R alternative. My least favorite thing about the 4R is the V6, I miss having an 8cyl. Plus I'd rather build a rig that's not as valuable as the 4R. Sale of the 4R will probably cover the LR AND a DD commuter vehicle, currently the 4R is my DD and adventure vehicle.

We've been looking for an LR3 with the coveted HD package and wow they hard to find! Congrats on finding yours. We were very impressed by the capability of our center diff locker though, would love to see the rear locker in action on some of these trails, (may make it look too easy for the video though, haha!).

When you lock it your front and rear drive shafts are locked together just like a Jeep going from two-wheel drive to four-wheel drive it's literally just putting you into standard four-wheel drive it's not a special feature

A center locking differential lock the front and rear drive shafts together to spin at the same rate just like a selectable four-wheel drive going into 4 wheel drive except it does it a different way because totally different type of transfer case but the end result is the same there's nothing to agree or disagree on. When a Jeep goes into four-wheel drive the front or rear drive shafts are locked together at the same rate when a Land Rover locks the center diff lock the front and rear drive shafts are locked together at the same rate. That's what I mean by it's nothing special when you lock CDL you are just putting it into standard four-wheel drive it's not debatable it's just a fact all CDL is is standard four-wheel drive from the already all wheel drive system. I know the system is not the same I have Land Rovers and jeeps they are completely different. Again all I'm saying is when you lock CDL you have created the end results that is the same as putting a Jeep in 4-wheel drive. Front and rear axles are locked at the same rate now whether or not you have individual diff locks is a whole other story but just saying front and rear power distribution becomes 50/50 when you lock CDL and same thing is when you put a Jeep into four low or four High

@@pwatom22 We have one that is 2". The one I am working on now, we are experimenting with more common spring/strut options. Toyota struts, coil overs or maybe oris. The coil conversion kits are ok, however if one fails in the middle of nowhere, you can't just walk into a parts store or wrecker and get a replacement.

@@pwatom22 I’d say about +2” is an accurate estimate. We may put spacers in to gain about inch as we’d like just a bit more clearance with the break over angle. We have the Atlantic British kit. Coils compared to the air in supremely more reliable. Personally I wouldn’t worry extensively about sourcing Toyota or other parts that fit in anticipation of the strut/ coil breaking. You can always just replace the broken one with whatever is available at the time and limp yourself home accordingly.

Rhino Hitch, is what your looking for, or the delete and put through the center hole of the rear bumper. Have to Weld in a cross member for that though.

Thanks for reaching out Richie. We have had a Rhino hitch on our other LR3 for awhile now and love it (except for the cost and some limitations on length of hitch you can use though). We wanted to experiment and see how a budget hitch would perform with the type of wheeling we do. Not a fan of decreasing departure angle however the ability to raise the suspension with the GAP iiD tool has somewhat mitigated this, and it has offered some amount of protection along the center line so we don’t rip the plastic bumper off 😂

Thanks buddy. It’s a conservative 32.5” Goodyear Duratrec tire on 18” steel rims. It’s been a very successful combo for us for years. We run this on 3 of our LR3’s in our fleet 👍

HELP!! I have an 06 GX470 w/ 175K. Runs awesome. However, father-in-law just passed away. I have an option to buy his '05 LR3 HSE w/ 104K. Seeing a LOT of great LR3 reviews but have also heard horror stories about LR3 reliability vs GX. Thoughts for overlanding between the two?

Steven, we are saddened to hear of your father-in-law’s passing. As for the LR3, I think a few things are at play as for reliability; the disco ii’s troublesome reputation, that’s why LR changed the name from Discovery to LR3. The engines in both our LR3’s are the Jaguar/ Ford 4.4 which are in more cars than you think (do some research) and have been bombproof for us. Next is the air suspension which as you see in the videos can be finicky but with good maintenance and some mechanical know is an incredible system. As many owners don’t understand the air system and don’t work on the rigs themselves this is where high dealer costs set in (hint: it’s not that complicated). Last is the overall cost of parts and mechanical work. You can get away with many ford parts on this but overall parts will be a bit more than Toyota I’d say. In a combined 8 years of owning these 2x LR3’s besides routine fluid changes we’ve done very little repairs to them and put them through a lot. Final point is that I’m usually leary of the first year or two of a production vehicle so 05 being the first year maybe do some research and see if there were any issues. Best of luck!

There are some positives about Hill Descent Control. I generally agree that it's annoying, but it's great when the terrain is uneven on a descent. You hit a hole and the wheel spins. Instead of the axle taking all that torque when you hit terra again, HDC brakes that spinning wheel and acts as a torque arrester of sorts. Also, it works in all gears, even N. So if you fail a hill climb you can use it to back down under control, since the gearing in R is high enough to he uncomfortably fast. Other than that, the 4-Lo gearing is doing all the work, you don't need HDC. I don't really agree about the articulation of the LR3, at least not when compared to other IFS vehicles. 10" of travel in front, 13" in rear. Of course the modified rods affect that, but look at those numbers to, say, an H2.. Great video, great work! Thanks for your service. These videos make me wanna be out there with ya on the trail. I've never been to Moab.

A lot of great info here! Can’t wait to try out the HDC in neutral, awesome tip. It has been difficult to find specific tech data on the suspension, first time I’ve heard numbers for travel (thanks). We use a lot of Jeeps as well where we love to geek out on our suspension setups. We have one Jeep that has 11” up front and 12” rear and it articulates MUCH better than the LR3, although the LR3 is still one of our favs. Looking forward to diving into that more. Thanks for the encouragement, it’s greatly appreciated!

@@MilitaryMobility yeah, articulation and wheel travel are two different things, for sure and the numbers I cite above are for wheel travel. I have never found RTI numbers for the LR3, so that's the best I've got. The cross-linked valves do a respectable job of creating "twist" by forcing air into the opposite spring when one wheel gets stuffed, but I'm sure it has its limitations. I have a pretty cool pic on a cross-axle section of trail where one rear wheel is stuffed into the wheel well and the other is being forced pretty far down. You'd swear there is a solid axle back there, but of course there isn't. As others have stated in these comments, the HD vehicles are a lot different to drive and that lack of articulation doesn't seem to matter so much. I have an LR3 with the locker and one without. The one with the rear locker almost never engages the Traction Control.

@@MilitaryMobility Just to add, you can control the speed of HDC using the cruise control buttons. Brings the speed right down, particularly in reverse. Neutral is an option but better to be in a gear, even in an auto.

For the majority of the forest service roads we left the vehicle in 4-hi and in normal mode. We’ve also gone through a good portion of the trail like this as well, testing to see what we could get away with. When the obstacle called for it we went to 4-low and would use the appropriate setting; rock crawl, mud and ruts, sand, etc. i usually like controlling all these aspects myself with other vehicles however it’s fun to try to dissect what the traction control system is doing as well.

They are a simple yet ingenious piece of kit that “tricks” the computer to think the suspension is lower that it should be; so it gives you a lift to clear bigger tires. This can also be done with the GAP iiD tool (which we also have). The GAP tool is essential for lots of reasons if you own a newer LR
