Today we take my Land Rover Discovery off-road with my buddy's Toyota Land Cruiser. We start the trip in the pursuit of snow but after realizing we won't find what we are after we default to our favorite obstacle... ROCKS! I built this Disco 2 specifically for overlanding/car camping but I wanted it to be capable enough to hit some tougher routes when the occasion presents itself. Today is the first time since completing the one ton swap that I have tested the Land Rover and I had it stuffed with camping gear lol. Not ideal but a great experience with great people!
Thank you Allen and Coty for showing us around.

This plan, build, explore idea you've got is going to connect a huge but quiet community. You are going to become the face of this community and probably become the most well known off-roader in the world. I knew that when you left bleepin jeep and decided to quit your job to do full time youtube that you were going to create something special. It's been an absolute delight to watch all of this happen the last couple of years. Your unique, authentic and original style of content is an absolute joy to watch. I've got a straight axle swap and 37s on my overlander and I gotta admit, it's a total game changer from the old IFS system with 35s. Most comfortable ride of my life. I would love to rebuild my engine and take the old girl around the country. But in my opinion, overlanding is long road trips with a rig that's ready for everything and any kind of terrain. Love the video! - I always dig when you put this thing up on youtube

@trailrunnah8886
@trailrunnah8886 2 года назад
Sounds like a great build, what is your rig? My "rig" is a 5th gen 4Runner, still running stock size all-terrains and stock suspension. My "overlanding" consists of long stretches of highway driving, with some dirt roads that could be done with my old Volvo Wagon, haha. Would love to SAS this at some point, but I think I'd probably be better off spending the money on something with V8 power.
@tomandhistruck
@tomandhistruck 2 года назад
@@trailrunnah8886 I love 4 runners! They have such an amazing legacy! Which one are you going to try first? V8 swap? Or SAS? If you are going SAS, you'll quickly find out that a change in gearing could bring a lot of new life to your rig without getting a new engine. If you pay someone to do either, they may have a comparable price tag, too. The SAS or V8 engine swap. But my rig is an 06 H3. I rarely see these things outside of a mall parking lot. But The adventure package has all the right numbers from 4:1 transfer case to a decent amount of usable power and low end torque. Give it a 3-link SAS and 5.13 gears and the H3 truly comes back to life and lives up to the reputation that GM wanted it to be. I wouldn't trade it for the world.
@trailrunnah8886
@trailrunnah8886 2 года назад
@@tomandhistruck quite frankly, for what I do in my 4Runner I really don't need either. I think if I had to pick one or the other I would rather have a V8 in it than the solid front axle. The V8 would definitely make it a lot more enjoyable to drive on a daily basis, I really dislike the 4 liter V6, and I don't think I'm even scratching the surface of what this is capable offroad even with IFS. Mine is a 2013 Trail Edition, so it has the rear locker, ATRAC, and crawl control. And I wasn't necessarily talking about V8 swapping the 4Runner, I don't even know if that would be legal where I live, more so getting rid of it and just starting with a vehicle that already has a V8. Not going to lie, I've been thinking a lot about selling the 4Runner and picking up a mid-2000s Tahoe or Yukon. 5.3 V8 power and more interior room would be nice over the 4Runner. Good point about the gearing though. I'm running stock size tires, but if I ever to go up to 33 or 34s I would strongly consider changing the gearing. I really like those H3's, I think the Adventure package is terrific and a great starting point. If I recall correctly, they did offer those with the 5.3L for a year or two? I think finding one of those would be the Holy Grail of H3's, haha. You have an Instagram? Would love to check out your H3. There's a shop in Colorado, RSG Offroad, that put one tons, 40 inch tires, and a supercharged 5.7 V8 from a Tundra into a 5th gen 4Runner. The things a beast, and probably the coolest 4Runner build out there.
@tomandhistruck
@tomandhistruck 2 года назад
@@trailrunnah8886 oh yeah man! A V8 would be a much better way to go if you want to keep your IFS. It would help you run 33s just fine! Also, your idea of getting a donor vehicle with an LS would by far be the cheapest way to do it. Everything is right there and ripe for the taking haha I wish I knew that the H3 Alpha was a thing when I got mine, that would have made life so much easier! I keep toying around with the idea of doing a v8 swap or a diesel swap in it. But I always come back to the conclusion that my present engine is fine for now and to just maintain it. It’s my overland rig that can go anywhere. I should keep it that way. Plus, I just finished the build fairly recently. I’m still getting to figure out what it can and can’t do and where all the corners are at. But my Instagram account is @tomandhistruck if you check it out, you will see a lot of pics of it on 35s and IFS. But the new pics are with the swap.

@DirtLifestyle
@DirtLifestyle 2 года назад
Thanks! Not sure I understand the question... Are you asking which one has more up travel? In this instance the disco has a big advantage when it comes to suspension travel. The LC still has radius arms and when it binds it leans the body over while the LR has a 3 link/4 link. When you watch the rock crawling footage you definitely see more lean out of the LC because the suspension binds on uptravel. Where as the LR stays nice and level. But this is definitely apples to oranges because my suspension is scratch built and Allen's is just modified factory suspension. But if I still had the factory LR suspension they would perform almost identical because both are radius arm in stock form. I hope this answers your question lol.

I'm wondering how much different the Disco would perform without 250lbs (ish?) on the roof- I always load really soft/ light stuff on my rack and have the "tent" set up inside- a platform that folds down flat when the middle row is down- I don't like having that much weight on the roof- especially for rock crawling. You have the center lock diff- should be pretty unstoppable with the 1 ton axles - if not- just add lockers and you can take that anywhere your TJ goes- without the tent on top. I would say if you're hearing the tick tick from the motor- you have the dreaded 4.6 slipped sleeve- time to put an LS in it or a diesel (your preference) and get it to be the most reliable rig you own! Marks Adapters have transfer case adapters to have an LS with a 6l80- and Alternative Conversion is getting some mileage out of their kit to put an LS in front of your LR transmission- It's my next step too.

It would be night and day with no RTT. But I built this for comfortable camping not rock crawling lol. BUT I wanted it to be able to hit the rocks if I need it to. That's why It's triple locked on 1 tons. I need it to perform despite the giant handicap of having all this camping stuff bolted to it. 👊

Slipped sleeve gets a bad wrap, but it's actually really uncommon. 10 to 1 odds my money goes to a lifter making noise which is commonly mistaken for a slipped sleeve. It can run a long long time with a bit of lifter tick.

Great video! Always enjoy watching the Disco. What sort of reliability issues have you ran into with the Disco where you don't trust it for long trips? I remember seeing the trans cooler line popping off/bursting in one of your previous videos. Have you had any other problems? Or is it more the worn out drivetrain like you were saying, or the LR reliability stigma? I love my D2 to pieces, its my favorite vehicle I've owned yet.

I haven had to do much but I have some "noises" that are concerning lol. And at more then 200k I don't trust many gas engines. But I'm replacing the oil pump next week so if that gets rid of the ticking I will trust it a little more 👍
@warshrike9075
@warshrike9075 2 года назад
@@DirtLifestyle I'm sure you're aware, but slipped liners are notorious on the disco 2's, which causes ticking noises. But, from what I understand it's pretty common for them to make some noise. Maybe try some heavier weight oil if you aren't already. I did 15w40 on my last oil change and it quieted my motor down a lot.
@warshrike9075
@warshrike9075 2 года назад
I doubt it'd be running as well as it is with a slipped liner though, for obvious reasons.
@DirtLifestyle
@DirtLifestyle 2 года назад
@@warshrike9075 I don't believe it's a slipped liner in my case. The sound is heavily influenced by oil. Low oil, fresh oil, and high detergent oil all change whether or not the tapping sound exists. When I was driving around a Vegas the oil light flickered on for a split second once or twice at idle. I looked it up and the light comes on when the pressure is under 7PSI. 10 psi is normal pressure at idle. With a little more research I discovered that these oil pumps split when they get high miles and it reduces their ability to pump at a normal pressure. It also creates a loud tapping sound when the pump is failing. Right now my conclusion is that the oil pump is split and it needs to be replaced. New pump shows up next week and once I open the engine up I will know more. Wish me luck lol. I've been thinking it was a sticky lifter this whole time especially because when I add sea foam it goes away. But now I'm leaning heavily towards a failing oil pump.
@warshrike9075
@warshrike9075 2 года назад
@@DirtLifestyle Good to know! I had no idea oil pump failure was common on these. That would make sense with the light flickering on and off though. Definitely good luck with it, hopefully it isn't anything more serious than that. But hey, 200,000 miles on one of these motors isn't too shabby. Would definitely like to hear if it cleans up your engine noise.

Is it me, or does that front axle look like it’s a little loose under torque? Around then 9:30 + mark. Or at least it looks like your tie rod is jumping up a little. Loose control arm maybe? Great video!

Also curious, whats a good protocol when on these smaller single track roads when you find oncoming traffic? Or is it just usually 'yolo' and you find a spot to pull off? I know you can't just pull off anywhere when it's wet like that as you will sink up to your axle/get stuck in a real hurry(I've seen this a lot south of the Boise airport).

I guess we know an LS swap is the only way forward with you comment on the drivetrain being clapped out. With that being said I've been in the Market for a discovery 2 for awhile and finally come across one. I'm taking a day or two to think about what I seen and on Tuesday I'll decide if I pull the trigger on that or not.
@DirtLifestyle
@DirtLifestyle 2 года назад
I would be willing to do an LS but only if I can pair it with a good 8 speed trans. Otherwise it's not really worth all the work. I need better MPG more then anything so more gears would be a giant improvement.

@@DirtLifestyle Find a turbo 6 then. Or get a stout six cylinder and put a turbo on it. You get the lower displacement of the six for efficiency and the turbo makes up for the loss in displacement when you need power. This is exactly what the automakers do to boost their efficiency numbers while maintaining power.
