The Series is in fairly good condition in terms of rust, but it hasn't been started in a long time so the engine is a bit of an unknown.
This week Simon and Erik go and look at Land Rover Series 2a and discuss what could be a good Land Rover Drive Project Car.
We also take a ride in Erik's Range Rover Classic and get a little status update.

Series or Classic, what would you choose as a project car? 🤔
@The-Observer
@The-Observer Год назад
Nice video. The Series looked good but if you were able to get a Classic V8 I think that would be an excellent project.
@tombrown879
@tombrown879 Год назад
A 3.9 or 4.5l in the series would be the cat's meow. but the ride would still be very rough without lots of expensive suspension work. And in stock form, would be very slow in modern traffic. Also not a lot of room for the family. The classic is truly a rover thru and thru. The 4 door would be better with the kids. but the styling of the 2 door is super.
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive Год назад
@The-Observer Yeah, I guess you could never go wrong with a Classic V8. There are starting to be very few good ones left in Norway. Maybe need to look outside the borders. 🤔
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive Год назад
@tombrown879 That would be really cool and with the top of in the summer I know I would be smiling from ear to ear. 😊 I like the 4 door too, not as elegant as the 2 door, but with a tiny lift and some slightly bigger wheels I think they come to their own. 😊 A 4 door would be better for overland trips as well. 🏔️👍

Tough choice. Series is probably the simpler one to restore as there are no really big parts, only chassis or roof if 109. RRC would probably mean a lot of welding of the body. Interior trim on Classics turns very brittle and can be harder to source. There will be a lot more wiring connectors on the later ones which turn brittle too. It is a more complicated setup. Both are worth doing in the end. Hope that helps.
@quintincairncross1088

Would be really fun to do a longer trip in one but not sure how my eardrums would handle it. 😂 Saw the Series guys at the last meetup driving with earplugs 😊

The first one I ever drove was a two door 1985 RRC V8 ... a huge thrill for an 18 year old in 1986. I still recall the body lean in the corners with fear.
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive Год назад
Hahaha, leaning with fear, loved that. I can so relate. I the Disco 3 is the same if you are not used to it, leans over before it settles. 😊 I can only image how it was like as a 18 year old. I get super excited now as a soon to be 38 year old. 😂 1985 two door is my dream car. 👌

It's strange how people hate on RR/LR for reliability but throughout the design changes everyone of them look great such classic looking pieces even the new ones look great. I think you cant go wrong on what ever you choose both look great I think it all boils down to your needs ie one will certainly be more comfortable then the other but then the series 2a will be something to throw around locally
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive Год назад
I couldn’t agree more with that. Design wise they all have something special. And I love the history of Land Rover. 😊 I have one thing that is affecting the choice that I will take up in another video. My daughter will be 16 in three years and she can then start practice driving. So a RRC would be the better choice I think, a later model with an okay gearbox. 😊

Everything should come out of Series 2a. I think it will be a fun project! Love the sound of V8! I can see Eric is smiling! 2 door is the rare one! Yes You need at least one classic! Modern truck for daily driver.
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive Год назад
Yep, a lot of work to get it going but for sure a fun project. Just a bit worried about the cost when it comes to the engine and getting it running again. 😅 We are both smiling all the way, not sure if it’s the V8 or us being back out driving together again or both. 👍 RRC is definitely a better all round car for daily use. 👍

Yeah, it has been taken care of it seams. Just been a bit forgotten the past years. 😊 The lack of rust is the most positive thing I think. The engine and the state on the inside being my most concerning unknown. 😅

Have to agree the RR classic would be my choice. 35 years ago I had a SeriesIIA 2.25 petrol here in Canada, and, it was a very bare bones vehicle. The coil spring suspension of the RR would make all the difference for me. BTW, you're the same age as our son, Matthew.
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive Год назад
That's cool! 1985 is a good vintage. 😊 But seriously, the RRC is on another level when it comes to comfort, even the early models. Erik's 1976 is just good fun to cruise around in, and with overdrive the engine and drivetrain noice is much lower on the highways. 👍

@@LandRoverDrive I'm pretty sure I could provide a Venn Diagram to demonstrate...that is nearly impossible. I see them over here under 10k occasionally. But they will need a some work. Perfect, if that even exists, start around $40k (USD) and go up. I've seen $89k (USD) asked with a straight face and expected to get that for one. Keep up the good work. I have a 95 NAS RRC v8 and not only love driving it but could stare at it all day long. However as I get older I think the 2 door RRC are the better looking of the two. You cannot beat v8 sound. I have a S3 109 station wagon which is a joy to drive and own. The S3 makes me laugh and smile when driving, the RRC though is such a good car to drive. For burning up miles the RRC is the one. For having fun and hauling a ton of camping gear the 109 wins hands down. You have a hard decision to make. I couldn’t so ended up with both. I would love to drive both of them in Norway. Thanks for the video and trip down memory lane. Cheers
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive Год назад
I would love to own both a RRC and a Series, they kind of complete each other when it comes to old classic cars and their usability. 😊 And I can look at RRC's all day long. They really got something right back then and I think it is the reason why I like the Discovery 3 as much. 😊 Ability + looks. If I found a 1985 RRC I don't think it would be a hard choice, on what to get first at least. 😂

Series III had fully synchronized gearbox. Series 2a prior to 69 had inboard headlamps. Super deep sill plates are SII or very early S11A. Positive vs negative ground. Generator vs alternator . Original seats are “elephant hide” grey. The difference in SII and SII A is increase in engine size.
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive Год назад
Thank you for the great insight! 😊 I have read a bit but are really a lot of small details on the different year models here. 😊 I really like the simplicity of the engines. Would be a nice change from the TDV6 in the Discovery 3. :)
@onetonlandrover
@onetonlandrover Год назад
Deep sills lasted until 1969 too, only very slightly after the lamps moved to the wings were they changed. The engine size increase was only on the diesel engine. The difference really was just in chassis numbering sequences and a few small details.
