There are probably only a few vehicles in automotive history that can compete with the Land Rover in terms of cult status. And when it comes to robustness and off-road capability, no one can beat it anyway. For those who had a lot to transport in the terrain, the LWB or 109 version with a long wheelbase was the best choice. The third generation of the British known as Series III was built from 1971 on almost 15 years unchanged.
The Land Rover series I, II, and III (commonly referred to as series Land Rovers, to distinguish them from later models) are off-road vehicles produced by the British manufacturer Rover Company. The Land Rover was the first mass-produced civilian four-wheel drive car with doors on it. In 1992, Land Rover claimed that 70% of all the vehicles they had built were still in use.Most series models feature leaf-spring suspension with selectable two or four-wheel drive (4WD), however series I's produced between 1948 and mid-1951 had constant 4WD via a freewheel mechanism, and the Stage 1 V8 version of the series III featured permanent 4WD. All three models could be started with a front hand crank and had the option of front & rear power takeoffs for accessories.
The series III had the same body and engine options as the preceding IIa, including station wagons and the 1 Ton versions. Little changed cosmetically from the IIA to the series III. The series III is the most common series vehicle, with 440,000 of the type built from 1971 to 1985. The headlights were moved to the wings on late production IIA models from 1968/9 onward (ostensibly to comply with Australian, American and Dutch lighting regulations) and remained in this position for the series III. The traditional metal grille, featured on the series I, II and IIA, was replaced with a plastic one for the series-III model. The 2.25-litre engine had its compression raised from 7:1 to 8:1, increasing the power slightly (the high compression engine had been an optional fit on the IIa model for several years). During the series-III production run from 1971 until 1985, the 1,000,000th Land Rover rolled off the production line in 1976. The series III saw many changes in the later part of its life as Land Rover updated the design to meet increased competition. This was the first model to feature synchromesh on all four gears, although some late H-suffix SIIA models (mainly the more expensive Station Wagons) had used the all-synchro box. In keeping with early 1970s trends in automotive interior design, both in safety and use of more advanced materials, the simple metal dashboard of earlier models was redesigned to accept a new moulded plastic dash. The instrument cluster, which was previously centrally located, was moved to the driver's side. Long-wheelbase series-III vehicles had the Salisbury rear axle (the differential housing and axle case are one piece)[clarification needed] as standard, although some late SIIA 109-inch (2,800 mm) vehicles had them too.
Also, new trim options were introduced to make the interior more comfortable if the buyer so wished (many farmers and commercial users preferred the original, non-trimmed interior).These changes culminated in April 1982 with the introduction of the "County" spec. Station Wagon Land Rovers, available in both 88-inch (2,200 mm) and 109-inch (2,800 mm) types. These had all-new cloth seats from the Leyland T-45 Lorry, soundproofing kits, tinted glass and other "soft" options designed to appeal to the leisure owner/user.Of more interest was the introduction of the High Capacity Pick Up to the 109-inch (2,800 mm) chassis. This was a pick-up truck load bay that offered 25% more cubic capacity than the standard pick-up style. The HCPU came with heavy-duty suspension and was popular with public utility companies and building contractors

Great build, as always and a big help as I start my own (July 2023). I discovered a detail that Revell got wrong that may be of help to other modellers. This is the 'doghouse' or transmission tunnel cover. On the real vehicles, they were never handed, all vehicles had the same transmission, as per right hand drive. In that area, only the hand brake lever changed position, not the 4WD & high/low ratio levers.

Great build Chris, every safari type adventure movie I ever saw they drove a land Rover in one form or another. It is one of the most recognized vehicles ever and I always wanted a kit. I can envision a roof rack where the great white hunter sits up top with his elephant gun looking for a trophy. I think I will replace the elephant gun with a big camera! Now I'm going to finally purchase one. Thanks a bunch.

Note to builders: I don't know if it was the case with all Rovers, but the Land Rover we had did not have metal trimmed window sliders: there was a small block of glass glued to the moving/sliding window, and a round metal release at the base of the window that you'd turn and release to allow the window to be slid open using the block of glass as a finger-handle.

More like Revell of Poland, which is just fine with me! Mine was molded in white! They stuff the long tree in the box to the point that it bends. If you plan to keep the kit unbuilt for a million years, you might want to do something about the bent tree.

Excellent detailing on this model, Chris. I had a 1970 Land Rover, 5 door Station Wagon just like that one. Mine had spare tire mounts on back door and Hood. By the way, those are not windows on the roof, they're domes. The under roof has vents. The domes are so you can open up the vents to for extra cooling, or to extract heat. Cheers!

I am getting back into it after 15 years, and I am looking for alternative stuff ie. found objects to replace the expensive systems mainly for painting and the booth itself.. whenever you get time. . I like the weathering with the cheap craft paints. No powders, oils and the results are as good. I like the windows especially - they look the most realistic I've seen in a while. And why use a brush instead of spray clear coat on the seats? It's the brushing that creates better vinyl?

@ianbeale2527
@ianbeale2527 4 года назад
Oh dear. I'm afraid Revell have got this badly wrong when it comes to LHD and RHD. The only lever that changes position when it comes to LHD or RHD would be the hand brake lever. Both the transfer box and 4wd lever remain on the right side of the vehicle regardless of which side the steering wheel is on. The Hand Brake lever would be on the same side as the steering wheel.So, unfortunately, the instructions have taken you down the wrong path. The part you scribbled out would have been correct - apart from the hand brake lever being in the LHD configuration. Another criticism of Revell , the much rarer 6 cylinder 2.6 engine. Why ? US market, perhaps ? Even this makes no sense as they only sold 811 vehicles in the USA and Canada with the 6 cylinder. Revell should have modelled the vastly more abundant 2.25 4 cylinder instead, or at least had that engine as an option. Nice model build, by the way.

Surely the gas pedal as you call it in the U.S. is always on the left?

Nope. UK and US have the same orientation of pedals.

Beauty! I got me this today, found it accidentally at a local store, thanks to my Son! I had this same truck in real when I was younger, but with the spare tire on the bonnet. ;-) Gonna make it a mini me of my old 1979 Land Rover 109 SIII sixpot. :-)

I'll have to try my hand at this model. My Dad bought one in 1971 when we were living in Holland (AFCENT). Picked it up in England from the factory and ultimately made it's way back to Canada. Unfortunately, my Dad's pride and joy was lost only a year and a half after buying it because a mechanic drained the fuel from the fuel tank, which he then let flow to the furnace at the dealership. Melted the Landrover down to the frame. A total loss. Very happy to see this model.

Very cool! I love the way you “dirty it up”. It would be cool if someone made trash (I don’t know, maybe someone does) that you could throw around on the floor. Like McDonald’s wrappers, empty soda and water bottles, etc.

Good job. Been painting 15mm gaming figures, machines, buildings, landscape for years. I went down a rabbit hole and found myself doing 1/72nd WWI plastic models for a game and now I'm building pickup trucks, tug boats and space ships. Great

Thanks, always try to have FUN with a hobby, it's the whole reason we started making models to begin with, and I'd like to get people back to just enjoying their hobby time :) Too many rivet counters and whiners have really taken a toll on the hobby as a whole. Nicely done Sir. In my humble opinion, the only things missing are the small round tax disk that would have been displayed in the bottom near side of the windscreen and that kind of vehicle would have various stickers on the rear window(s) showing where it had been. Otherwise, beautifully weathered and very realistic looking!

Hello, This is one of the greatest kits lately. To bad I don't have anyplace to build for now. I'm still settling in to a new place. I got to get this kit. I have to say this is by far your best review to date. I really like the weathering you did, it is not over done and looks great. I see all to often way over done weathering like they sat in the woods for decades. Seems people get carried away. A little goes a long way. I look at old cars, trucks and machines on line. This gives me an idea on real time weathering. Thank you for this review. If it was not for you I would never know this made. But I do look at Model Round Up a lot and a few others. Thanks again. I really look forward to the next one. Very informative and enjoyable.
