For 1978, Chevrolet introduced a totally redesigned El Camino® based on the all-new '78 Malibu platform. The new design was a success, and the El Camino would retain the same basic design with minor changes until it was discontinued. The dual-purpose El Camino was popular with buyers when it was new, and today it is popular among lowrider and street machine enthusiasts.
Features
Choice of 3 build options include Stock, Street, and Lowrider.
Optional Camper Top & Tonneau Cover.
Three complete sets of wheels and tires
Stock and custom hood, seat, steering wheel and front grill options.
Stock and turbo-charged custom engine build options.
Molded in white and clear with chrome plated parts and soft black tires.
116 Parts
The Chevrolet El Camino is a pickup / coupé utility vehicle that was produced by Chevrolet between 1959-60 and 1964-1987. Unlike a standard pickup truck, the El Camino was adapted from the standard two-door Chevrolet station wagon platform and integrated the cab and cargo bed into the body.
Introduced in the 1959 model year in response to the success of the Ford Ranchero pickup, its first run lasted only two years. Production resumed for the 1964-1977 model years based on the Chevelle platform, and continued for the 1978-1987 model years based on the GM G-body platform.
Although based on corresponding General Motors car lines, the vehicle is classified in the United States as a pickup.[1] GMC's badge engineered El Camino variant, the Sprint, was introduced for the 1971 model year. Renamed Caballero in 1978, it was also produced through the 1987 model year.
The 1978 through 1987 El Caminos were produced in four trim levels: Classic, Black Knight (1978)/Royal Knight (1979-83), Conquista and Super Sport, and shared chassis components with the Chevrolet Malibu. Chevrolet 90° V6 and Buick V6 engines were used for the first time. The optional 305 cubic-inch small block V8 was rated at 150 or 165 hp (112 or 123 kW), and from 1982-1984, the Oldsmobile-sourced diesel engine was also optional.
A new, trimmer El Camino was unveiled in 1978, adopting the new, more sharp-edged Malibu styling, and a one-inch longer wheelbase of 117 in (2,972 mm). The front end sheet metal and doors were shared with the Malibu, and the rear tailgate and bumper was shared with the Malibu station wagon. For the first time, though, the El Camino had a unique chassis - it was shared with no other Chevrolet. The front end featured a new single rectangular headlight design. The base engine was a 200-cubic-inch (3.3-liter) V6 that developed 95 hp (71 kW), except in California where, to meet emissions standards, the 231-cubic-inch Buick engine was the base engine. Two upgrades could be ordered: a 305-cubic-inch V8 with 145 hp (108 kW), or a 350-cubic-inch V8 with 170 hp (127 kW) that was only available in El Caminos and Malibu station wagons. It was not available on Malibu passenger cars (with exception to coupe and sedan Malibu 9C1 police vehicles). Among GM makes, at least, the era of bigness was fading into history, overtaken by a new age of efficiency and economy.
The 1979 model got minimal changes following its debut as a redesigned "new-size" model in 1978. Alterations to the 1979 El Camino amounting to little more than a new divided grille. However, a "small-block" 267-cubic-inch (4.4-liter) V8 joined the options list and slotted between the standard 3.3-liter V6 and the optional 5.0-liter four-barrel V8. The 350-cubic-inch (5.7-liter) V8, developing 170 hp (127 kW) was again available. Both three- and four-speed manual transmissions had floor shifters.
The 1980 El Camino started out the 1980s with few changes, though engine choices were shuffled a little. The base V6 displaced 229 cubic inches, up from 200 the year before. Horsepower increased from 94 to 115 hp (70 to 86 kW). Optional again were a 267-cubic-inch V8 with 125 hp (93 kW) and a 305 V8, now with 155 hp (116 kW) (down five). The 350 with 170 hp (127 kW) offered in 1979 was dropped. A three speed floor shifted manual transmission was standard, but most got the optional three-speed automatic.
The 1981 models received a new horizontal tube grill. The 1981 engines mostly continued from 1980, but now used GM's Computer Command Control (CCC) emission system. The base 229-cubic-inch V6 made 110 hp (82 kW) (down from 115 hp (86 kW)), as did the California-only 231-cubic-inch Buick V6. Optional engines were the 267-cubic-inch V8 with 115 hp (86 kW) and The 305-cubic-inch V8, now with 150 hp (112 kW). The three-speed automatic added a lock-up torque converter to aid highway mileage.
Production
1978 El Camino SS 12,027
1978 El Camino Total 54,286
1979 El Camino Total 58,008
1980 El Camino Total 40,932

I wish someone told me 50 years ago to have fun making the models and use your creativity. I did and still had fun but there was stress involved trying to make it look exactly like the box art. Thank you for those words of wisdom!!

I did mine, just like we did the real El Caminos back in the day. Got rid of that 305... Dropped in a Chevy 350. Eliminated that catalytic converter, gave it long tube headers, and big exhaust pipe, with two mufflers. Scrapped that stock intake. Painted the engine orange, to resemble the 350. With aluminum heads Aluminum Intake, four-barrel carburetor, and a single, low profile air cleaner. And then, painted it just like you would see them in real life... Primer over rust. I love the peeling clear coat though... That is spot-on for those cars. But that's what happens when you're experimenting with waterborne paint. I used to work as an auto body professional. And your three most common types of damage, are front right fender. Left rear quarter. Which, usually bends the wheels, when it's pushed against the curb. And deer hits. Deer usually go down the side of the car. Hood header fender and door. Or, up and over. That's very close to what that kind of damaged would look like on a steel door. The same damage on an aluminum door, however, slices right through the skin. Cars with solid steel bumpers, that take damage on the end of the bumper... Usually bends the frame. Like a giant lever. Usually, bent to the left. (Right front hit) Just something to think about, while you're building in damage. Personally, I like the old beat-up model cars, better than the show cars. They are a better reflection of what actually happens on the roads. You do incredible work man. I'm glued to your Channel. one more tip: this is true in automotive, as it is in model cars. Red yellow and blue, are very transparent colors. And rely on the primer underneath the colors, To give you the brightness and Clarity of the color. Yellow, is brighter over white primer, then it is over black. Gray is typical. But there is also a red primer. we typically use the red primer over black, so we can determine the coverage. These are called, color building primers. A company called SEM, has every interior color, in plastic dye. It's a little expensive. But it looks great.

EXCELLENT BACK STORY AND BUILD BROTHER, LOOKS FANTASTIC !!!! You gotta love those old G bodies. It's amazing how 15-20 years ago the G body was like the black sheep of the GM family and no one wanted them and you could pick up one in very good condition for about $1500 but now everyone loves them and the prices have skyrocketed. Great job like always and Thank you for sharing, keep em coming. Everyone keep yourself and love ones safe and healthy.

these weathered cars are always my favorites! the story behind the car makes the build that much better. I have one of these somewhere in a box in my storage room. it was an already built car my step-brother gave me. after it fell off a shelf and exploded, I rebuilt it using parts and pieces from my junk box. wheels and tires from a 57 corvette gasser, an engine from a 67 corvette, and a blower on it from a 68 corvette kit. a battery box in the back and I don't remember where the seats came from. it was a fun car to rebuild.

Your story for the model is great and very accurate to most cars I've seen in the '90s. Especially when a young kid with a new job buys it. This guy is just resisting the call from everyone to paint if primer or flat black. For the tires, just sand of some light grey pastel chalk or soapstone and and with a junk brush, brush it on the inner sidewalls and grooves of the treads. I have the original Black knight kit not built.

I love how you remind everyone to accept each other's modeling. I've quit quite a few hobbies because of "experts" demeaning just for the sake of demeaning. No encouragement. Mountain bikers are the biggest A-holes that exist, by the way. You've made me enjoy model building again! Thanks!

You bet, this is a hobby and it's meant to be a way to pass time and step away from the stress of real life. Too many rivet counters and killjoys have done their best to ruin it and make it way way way too serious. And in doing so scare thousands of modelers away every year. We'll bring back the FUN one model at a time!

All-Car! Love-it! Purchased many parts from the GB store. Whitlock was another, but I think that was southern WI (Milwaukee)

Great news! I found a supplier for GMC Caballero decals! Rayskits.com. They aren’t cheap, and they come from Europe, but from what I can tell they should be awesome. I have 3 GMC Caballero sheets ordered from him & will let you know how they look when I het them.

I dreamed of a lowered gloss black El Camino with a flamed paint job, worked 383 lake pipes. I'd love to build it using this kit . AQlso dig the weathering. I have some early glue bombs I can use
