Land Rover TDV6 most essential maintenance: Timing belt and oil pump

This content is marvellous, Christian is a fantastic engineer and Vera is very patient expert who lets Christin complete the tasks, love the vlog from the UK, the humor is perfect for us Brits, keep it up guys.

If Vera and Christian ever become grandparents, their grandkids will be the most blessed children in the world to have grandparents like these two!! I only wish I was so lucky.

I would never have the confidence to do some of what you do, but still love watching the videos anyway... I watch them for those lovely one-liners that Christian comes out with, he has such a great sense of humour... always entertaining :-)

If we had a Land Rover, I would consider myself very fortunate to have videos by LR Time showing the proper way to keep up our car. Thank you, Christian and Vera, for the time you spend documenting these for very little monetary gain. These are more than entertainment, though. They are craftpeoples' experience, and that makes them valuable.

This is by far the best video on an LR3 timing belt replacement I have seen - ever! thank you Christian & Vera. I have replaced timing belts (and chains) in 4 cylinder engines, both north-south engines and east-west mounted engines. I have never let timing belts reach the maximum kilometres set by the manufacturer. I always do them earlier. Timing chains are another matter, I replace them when they get too rattily, though never rattily enough to wear any metal parts on the head or block.

I had my timing belt done but my local garage refused to fit the fuel pump belt as 'it is too difficult!" - and if "it goes" no engine damage will result??? (I just have to get a taxi home) I threw my EGR valves away and blanked them off - car ran so much better for years after! Great video guys and well done for the entertainment.

Good job Christian and Vera , my local Land Rover garage won't change your timing belts unless you change the oil pump at the same, like you did , and they only fit Dayco belt & pulley kits . My garage quoted me £950 for this , so you saved yourself a fortune again , and you have piece of mind knowing it has been done properly... take care Graeme

You make this look so easy. I almost broke myself doing this job. But glad I did it! I changed the timing belt in 2020 and the belt was dated 2005

Great stuff guy’s with humour thrown in I keep all the plastic protective caps off spark plugs and use 3 of these at the bottom of the crankshaft pulley to hold the cambelt in place, works on most makes and models I work on..

Australia here, umm 32C today. It does get cold in winter, Melbourne, maybe 5C!

I applaud your teamwork on this job. It was a very in-depth video with you checking lots of other things along the line for possible replacement. Always good but as you said you always need another part in case you come across one that needs replacement, but sometimes I guess you just have to put it back if still relatively OK & replace it soonest later otherwise you'll end never getting the job finished or your car back on the road again, something like all the kings horses & all the kings men that couldn't put Humpty Dumpty together again scenario :) Won't recommend doing this oneself if you don't have the experience like you have.

Hiya , as always , fantastic and informative video , mines due again in early , 2023 , in 2016 , new oil pump , water pump, tensioners, rear fuel belt , Aux belt / timing belt , etc were all replaced , hope ur both keeping safe and well , thk u so much as always for sharing ur vast knowledge and skill set

Christian, you mention Australia for the weather but we get temperatures in the mid to high thirties at present. The differences are working with a lot of clothing to sweating all over the place. At least you can go to the beach after working here. Great detailed work again from the professor and apprentice.

Vera you are amazing and not a woman who files her nails and you arent afraid of getting your hands dirty. Why cant women be mechanics, they operated lathes years ago.

Christian… change your oil pressure gauge live to a ignition live that remains on when starting… looks like it switches off when cranking so you cannot read the pressure until it has stopped cranking, started and ‘booted up’. You don’t know if it’s the boot up time or a real delay in oil pressure building 👍

Many thanks from PORTUGAL for all this really nice explanation and also for the wonderful oil pump test video. We follow all your instructions during the timing belt and oil pump replacement on my 2005 Range Rover Sport 2.7 TDV6 with 180M Km. We get the replacement of the original LR (FoMoC) oil pump with no reinforcement to a brand new LR (FoMoC) Pump reinforced. Hope now the Crankshaft will no broke for next 100M Km. :)

Hi Vera, Christian, thank you very much for this video. Like always very valuable! Since my timing belt was renewed in a workshop I have a little ticking noise, although the car is running. Hope I can find a solution for that. But in general I would like to thank you for your channel. I wouldn‘t own a D3 without you guys. I brought the car in July 2021 for our 6 month trip starting this year in April. I watched all your videos and tried to do all the necessary maintenance with same level of quality like you do, self-explanatory that your level of quality is hardly to reach;-). There were not less situations I wanted to have you as my telephone - Joker or to feel jealous that I am not Fabian:-). Just completing this job, I like your crank pulley holding tool, I made one similar using an old large open ended spanner (3/4 Whitworth) and drilled 3 holes in it to bolt through onto the pulley. Then a piece of pipe over the spanner, it worked really well

I would consider use only LR genuine parts for timing belt replacement. I have been disappointed by after market kits using inferior quality parts to save on cost as you demonstrated. Great video with loads of info and detail,

Wonderful instructional video Vera and Christian, you put together good a good product. I'm so tired now from all that work that you got done I need a good night's sleep. Toyota jobs don't have a "degree of difficulty factor", they never break down, just ask any Toyota owner, they'll tell you.

Great video, very entertaining. I was even able to appreciate it as I was sorting my big change jar, separating the quarters from the dimes, nickels, and pennies. I need quarters for the self-serve carwash, practically every day lately. It's been so cold and snowy here in Michigan, they keep salting the roads, and I'm trying to keep my car clean - inside and out - for the first time in my life. I wonder if this type of chit chat is good or bad for the YT algorithm. I only know that you certainly deserve more views. Your videos are the best.

Have only just bought my first in the Landy family and coming to grips with it's idiosyncrasies. It's content such as this that makes it possible for us DIY'ers to maintain these old beasts - so many thanks. Just interested in Christian's 'credentials' ie is he or was he an engineer? how did he know the cam sprocket bolt can be used 3 times (often angle tightening means it can only be used once due to the stretch you impart on it)?

Christian, thank you and your charming and lovely wife (you are very lucky, as my wife is not one bit interested in how engines work, just Horses), for all your informative and very entertaining videos. Where do you get all your technical information from, and how can I obtain it too, I don't mind paying for it by the way? I also have a 'Queen' :) in white, black & grey two tone Turbine wheels and black accents etc, it also has a red leather interior, though mine is a long wheel base, I will be keeping this one also. My wife has not very long ago bought a Discovery 4, Luxury model, which has just under 90000 Miles, not Kilometres, on it, she loves it, I like it too, I think it's much better that the new Defender, which my son has one of those, part petrol, part electric. So I am going to do the timing belts and the transmision oil and filter etc. I personally don't like electric, yes they are fast, but not practical to me. I believe we we will all be using Hydrogen anyway before too long. I had a car running on Hydrogen in 1976, so its doable. I have personally owned 56 Range Rovers and quite a number of other vehicles, which some I still have. The first one cost me £1800.00 brand new in 1970, which was quite a lot of money in those days. I believe it was one of the first one's to be produced. It was Bahama Gold, but to me, it looked more like an English Mustard colour, obviously a two door with plastic seats, no carpet or radio and certainly no power steering. I can still remember my arms aching badly, mind you I was only 16 and legally couldn't drive it on the public roads, but of course I did do so. I only ever got pulled by the Police once and that was because the Policemen had not seen one before! I have never owned or even driven a P38, never liked them one bit. I do my own maintenance now, not only because I enjoy it, but I do not trust the so called experts at the dealerships. I have had bad experiences, especially with the early models with the Buick 3.5 V8 engines, the cams used to wear down on them at low fairly miles. I remember picking one up and the head mechanic giving me a Tobacco tin with all the nuts and bolts they had left over!! That also happened at another dealership with a 12 seater 3.5 V8 Defender (1986), which I still have. Anyway, sorry about the long story, but I thought I would just let you know I am serious about my Land Rovers. Kind Regards. Paul

Well plenty for me to get to grips with after watching this as I have my belt and pump to do. The only pain is having to buy the specialist tool to insert the seal correctly. Interesting that some say 1mm deeper than flush and some say flush. I suppose if it was flush then you wouldn't need a machined tool to set it deeper. Great video with all the necessary details to help me out. Also I was surprised that the gates stuff wasn't up to standard. Thanks again 😁

i just did my heads oil pump timing chain and gears water pump lifters and cleaned up pickup tube oil pan intake manifold etc. on my d1

The washer in the crankshaft pulley is called a diamond coated friction washer and is part of how the pulley grips the crankshaft…

Note that the Jags with with 2.7 have a different sump, and it is not possible to remove the oil pump until after the sump has been removed. In order to get the sump out on my XJ I had to lift the engine up maybe 1cm.

The priming of the oil pump was a top tip👍 Is the license plate for real😄 And why not install a heat pump in the garage? Much less noise, no exhaust fumes or CO2 to annoy Johnny Polar bear👍

great video as always .in past videos you have mentioned that the high pressure diesel pipes should not be re used .the injection equipment manufactures .. Bosch in this case but also Delphi .suspected that reusing them .would generate a tiny amount of swarf ? cause the injector needle to seize .and flood the engine with high pressure diesel . ive reused over fifty pipe sets and not had a problem . stay safe
