Only a real landy man be so proud of his shiny balls, lol. My early 3 door diesel Disco I owned for 10 years I changed the front swivels lub to Lithium grease with a drop of EP gear oil to reduce possible leakage from the seals. I had to sell the old girl to a collector in the end but with 240.000 MILES not KPH on the clock it ran sweet as a nut still. Under the bonnet I had 2 x 12 volt batteries giving 12 volts but huge Amps so the old girl started without heater plugs on the coldest of days. Miss the old girl but my dodgy left leg dont, but now run a Freelander with its factory BMW diesel engine with auto box, HSE trim, not quite the same as a Disco but its comfy, warm and reliable (i hope) Give us more updates mate - thanks for the video - Ian -- UK.

Yes its now 24 hours later and Im just rinsing off a bucket of nice rust free bolts which I then spray with fish oil or take them in and get them zinc plated. you will see the results in the next Brutus video. Today Im making a new custom header pipe for Sandy the Landy cos she has a transplanted 3.3 engine from a Commodore. That vid will be up on Sunday

The stage 1 V8 is a great machine, but it was introduced too late. Had it come along ten, even five years earlier it might have helped keep sales afloat. But instead they gave us another petrol gas-guzzler at a time when petrol prices were rising. They needed a decent Turbo diesel, which we didn't get until 1990. Its typical Land-Rover unfortunately, everything came about ten years after it was needed. Also the whole detuning the V8 to 91BHP just took away any advantage the engine offered, we didn't get a full blooded V8 until the 110 version in 1983.
@t.h.o.r.
@t.h.o.r. 3 года назад
Yes absolutely! They missed the boat when Nissan, Toyota, Jeep and International all went to big sixes 20 years earlier and again when high speed diesels came along. The Rover V8 is a lovely motor once you get those awful SU carbs off them. I have some ignition and induction mods to do on this one that will bring it into the 21st century fuel consumption wise. - But that'l be 6 months away.. rebuild first.
@PillSharks
@PillSharks 3 года назад
Yep, that was Land Rover down to a T unfortunately, like you say, everything was always done too late! I often wonder on how well the 3.5 V8 would have done as a diesel, I know they were looking into it with Perkins in the 70s and 80s but it was eventually scrapped...I think they were going to do a NA and Turbo which would have been a great engine, I suppose they were worried about everything else needing to be beefed up to take the extra power and torque! Anyway, them days have gone and the vehicle Land Rover now build don’t do anything for me, I guess I’ll just keep my old 200tdi running for the rest of my day!
@onetonlandrover
@onetonlandrover 3 года назад
@@PillSharks Project iceberg I think it was called. My understanding is they just couldn't get it to work. The V8 should have been in by 1970, the six cylinder should have been in by 1961 for the IIA and in three litre form. Oh well, it is what it is. Must admit I've no complaints about my Tdci.

My first Land Rover was a series 1 swb with a 6-pot from a Rover 90. I currently have a 1984 127 V8 with EFI and auto-box. The switch to EFI reduced fuel consumption by about 60%
@PillSharks
@PillSharks 3 года назад
@@onetonlandrover yes, I thought I’d put “Project Iceberg” in the comment...that was the name, I thought they had it running and BL or Land Rover pulled out and Perkins who went into it with them carried it off for some time after, I’ll have to do a little reading into it when I have time! It was always a bigger diesel what let them down, I think the 2.25 petrol was a fine engine, that with the choice of the V8 and a larger capacity Diesel would have been just the ticket! I also use a 2013 2.2 tdci and I must say it pulls like a train, although I do wonder how long these small over stressed engines will last!

There is a few mods for the old v8 you can do to help them last a bit longer, use a Teflon camshaft thrust bolt to prevent camshaft end float on all Rover V8 engines using distributor ignition as it reduces wear on the distributor gears and followers, just a front off cover off job, a bit more involved is to drill the front web to let extra oil on to cam chain as the oil returns to the sump. I love that motor and bomb proof if built right, check out real steel web site to see what you can still get for these motors www.realsteel.co.uk/ and www.realsteel.co.uk/section1.pdf good luck with the build.

Thanks so much. Awesome info. I've identified it.Its a 1988 3.9 with 9.35:1 comp. It's oil is super clean. It has has a new ignition booster st some stage and a new water pump.everything else looks untouched.
@BILLHOVER
@BILLHOVER 3 года назад
If you ever rebuild a rover V8 always pack the oil pump with grease as they can be a bitch to get the pressure up fast or an old dissy shaft without the gear and a drill to prime it.

I worked there for 10 years. This was not the greatest Land Rover ever built. It was a bag of shite. The 3.5L engine had to be detuned to deal with the awful handling of the leaf spring chassis, and those leaking seals on diffs, hubs..... The one good thing was the Santana 4 speed gearbox - if this has one. I worked on the Defender line in the 80's as a QC engineer, and the chassis could be up to one inch out of line longitudinally! The vehicle we did like was the Swiss Army Defender 90 with the Range Rover 3.9 V8 EFI, automatic box and chain driven transfer box. That was super fun to drive, fast, but the Swiss Army went for G Wagens (I think). Best Land Rover? I had a US spec '95 Range Rover SWB County with the Disco dash, air suspension, in dark metallic green with cream leather. That rocked.
