Quick comment on the storing of fuel in the trunk of a car. Be mindful that if you live in a hot environment, the gases inside the can will expand and accumulate inside the vehicle (especially if there are venting/bleeder valves). If not allowed to vent, the constant expansion/contraction of the can will weaken the seams and eventually cause a rupture/leak. One way around this could be running a breather line somewhere from the tank to the exterior of the vehicle. I live in Houston and during the summer the inside of a trunk can easily reach 130+, even leaving cans in my garage will cause them to swell considerably so I can imagine long term trunk storage would be even worse. Not discrediting the concept, just thought that should be said. Love the content btw, been watching for a while.

I was actually thinking about this exact thing. Lived in NC for a few years and the summers were pretty toasty, and the 1 gallon cans I had bloated up super bad. Bleeder lines would be a good idea though.

Great info.! My 1999 Land Cruiser w/350k miles on her and running strong. I stored extra hoses, belts, basic survival kit and some metal water bottles in the lower tail gate. I like the rear ARB set you have. Fyi, "Chow Cares" is a great you tube site for 100 series maintenance and repairs. Looking forward to the rest of your build out. Thanks.

It is the finest vehicle ever made. It just works and I never worry about it mechanically (with regular maintenance). I have a GX460.

@@pinoy413 The only thing that is bad is the gas mileage. Otherwise it's a solid as a brick. A friend of mine as a 470 with 380k miles on it. They are truly made to be 30 year cars. My F150 barely lasted 7 years.

Gx460 is the same chassis as a Land Cruiser Prado 150, but with a v8. Very capable vehicle. Get some AT tires and a locking rear diff you can go anywhere.

Mike I've learned alot from you from your videos, that being said gas can in the trunk is no bueno, due to fumes and static. My buddy is a fireman and had to hose down a car that something similar happened

Fuel is dangerous and most of the time the accidental combustion is from a plastic container, faulty lid, not being secured are any combo of those. I have seen cans leak for various reasons over the years of Jeep trailing and RZR riding, most of the time it doesn't result in fire. I'm not saying it can't happen but of the 3 incidents I have witnessed that did light up, it was either plastic container or a bad cap/lid. PSA: do NOT carry plastic gas cans in the back of Side by Sides, get a metal can so it if does leak it will just candle and not fail so catastrophically.

@@zak9129 Yea i have to agree to that. I almost learnt a deadly or injurious lesson while on a road trip. The heat in arizona almost made the can explode. We can smell the fuel escaping and when I pulled over it was swollen. I had to slowly every 5 minutes release the cap to release pressure while it cools off in the shade.

Never had fumes come out of my gas can into my car or even opening the trunk. And that was with a POS harbor freight gas can (that did fall apart on me) but did pass the proof of concept. No honda civic for me, just my lil '02 cavalier stick shift that is STILL getting 30+ mpg I just need to clear all the extra army crap out of my trunk...family is pissy about all the army bags I have for army time :/ All that being said, it IS better to be safe.

Not just that. But the OEM fuel tank is under the floor of the car, separated from the passengers, literally by a steel wall. Fuel inside the passenger compartment (seatback is not designed to stop fuel/fire) is a catastrophically bad idea, unless you're actually using a fuel cell. I'm shocked at how bad this advice is.

I have a medium sized ice chest in the trunk of my Corolla. It get over 100 degrees out where I live so I keep my med Kit, 1 MRE, water inside the chest in case of emergency. I never have less than 1/2 tank of fuel in the car. I also keep a bag of fresh clothes in the car. I plan to downsize to an IFAK as my current med Kit is an entire backpack 🎒 of med supplies which I would prefer to keep in the house. Other items I keep in the car are tire plug Kit, air pump, basic tools, duck tape, gloves, bungee cords, and some rope. I also have a basic BiC lighter and purchased a cigarette lighter plug for backup.

I personally own a electric chainsaw it cuts down on what I have to carry. Here in the Carolinas it's a necessity here near the coast because of the number of hurricanes we have.

I was all about decking my tundra out with a bunch of the cool shit like a RTT, decked storage, roll out fridge and all the cool stuff and then I started looking at the people using that stuff and it seemed more and more like hipsters wanting to look cool. We have a 1999 lx 470 with 225 k on it. Just picked up a 570 with 96K. These are our escape vehicles, moving the family back into the inter mountain 🏔 west! Looking into ACE security film for the glass on the 200. These trucks are fucking bad ass!

Interesting. Only thing I question is the fuel bladder in the truck. Difference in a gas tank is there is metal between the trunk and gas tank. A lot of cars including the Honda Civic doesn’t have a metal barrier between the trunk and passenger compartment. Examples of issues, Ford pinto, Ford Mustang 1964-1968. My expertise is in the automotive industry and safety within that industry. Other than that good video.

Always have a container of distilled water. It's very important for maintenance. Alcohol is a must in your vehicle and can be stored in a msr container. Depending on the alcohol content it can be mixed with fuel in a pinch. I'm not telling you to start a moonshine operation. You can order higher content alcohol from a laboratory company.

I have a 1997 F250 ext cab full size bed- altho its a 3/4 ton it has a 1 ton suspension and turbo diesel motor and 4 wheel drive- manual hubs towing or regular we get 21 mpg love my truck

Lesson learned: had a beautiful big SUV with big tires and used premium gas. Hurricane evacuation: flat that I physically could not get lugs off and almost out of gas and stations only had regular.

if you need a budget option. gen 1 sequoia. I have had a 62 series, a 100, and a sequoia. my sequoia hands down kicks my 100 series ass for space and is just as capable and i paid about half.

Can I make the recommendation that if you carry a couple gallons of gasoline in your car, that you get engineered fuel. Can generally buy a 5 gallon can at your local motorsports/motorcycle shop, and it has a much more adequate shelf life. That 5 gallon tank, stabilizer or not, should be used every 3 months

Put your spare tire on the back of the vehicle bumper rack and include a secondary fuel tank underneath the vehicle as most serious overlanders do. I'd like to hear what kind of radio comms you're going to put in this build of yours. What about a solar generator for power onboard and off?

Oginallly batteries were kept dry then the acid/water was added to kick off the chemical reaction. This extended the shelf life. There ought to be a place that will sell the dry batteries and acid separately so you can keep and store it for years until you need to activate it. Now its all done ahead of time but the battery life starts ticking down right from the factory.

Water filtration? What would you recommend?

Home or Outback? In home filtration, I recommend Big Berkey water filters. I've used mine to filter out pond scum. Yes, you can drink it in a pinch, but I don't recommend drinking for long periods. For Outback? Berkey does do smaller backpackable, Life Straws. As well as smaller filtration systems. Try Berkey water systems for both home and trail. Remember, water will be the gold standard for survival!

Steel bumpers are still good in Florida too because our deer may be small but a 200 pound hog or a 350 pound bear will still cause you lots of problems! Oh, and protesters can still cause you problems if you end up in the wrong area so a steel bumper lets you push your way out of certain circumstances with less damage to your vehicle. 😁

Mike Glover, I love you man but DO NOT!!! tell anyone to store portable gas cans in their vehicle!!!! Fuel tanks under your vehicle are made to vent vapors to the outside. When temperatures rise gasoline expands and in order for the pressure to equalize the vapors are released. A portable gas can will literally explode in your trunk if the pressure is not released. They are designed for brief periods of transportation, not storage in hot environments. Even the gas cans I keep in my outside shed are in a well ventilated space. If any fumes escape around a cap all it takes is for electric wiring or even static electicity to create a spark and have an explosion, hopefully with you not inside the vehicle. I am captain with 23 years experience for a major city's fire department. Thanks for the content but please do not recommend people do this.
