Mike Glover and Mike Hernandez do a walk-around of Mike Hernandez's Jeep Gladiator Rubicon. Mike has been working on his Jeep for about a year now and he's just about got it set up where he wants it. He set it up for recreational adventuring and overlanding, but it has translated well into a bugout vehicle should it ever come to that. He's combined overlanding and rock crawling capabilities while still keeping it as a daily driver.

Buy a 90's Jeep Cherokee and $500 to $800 worth of decent camping equipment and you will do more actual off-road camping than 95% of the "Overlanding" crowd. I see way more $3000 pop up tents on the backs of Tacos and Jeeps in town then I ever do in the backcountry.

agreed, but question. I got a buffalo plaid cruiser last week and the stripes go vertical, is that from another year or something? I know Half Face Blades does the dry bag art for Filson, and Mike's friends with Andrew; wouldnt imagine a knock off filson lol.

Put an emergency space blanket under the mattress pad for more R value in the cold. Swap out your clothes before sleep with dry wool stuff. Also keep boiling water in a single wall Klean Kanteen.

I appreciate the in between discussion here. I have a 4runner that allows my family mobility, is very capable offroad as setup, but is also a daily driver that goes to work, school, the grocery store, and SHTF. I have been debating the dual battery setup, but financially can't go to the "elitist" setup that you guys speak to here.

That thing will outlast that tacti-cool Jeep. I know of people that bought 4Runners 20-30 years ago and still have them. I have great memories "outlanding" by the beach on a VW beetle and a cheap Coleman tent. As soon as the sun started rising I felt like a turkey in Thanksgiving. No need to spend $100k+ to have fun. If you have them, great, go for it.

If you are going to overland a Jeep, just make sure you trailer an extra whole Jeep, since, well, Jeeps/FCA... Looks like a badass rig, but I'm gonna stick with my Tundra.

I looked at 'em, but the local Jeep dealer wasn't interested in offering anything close to fair value for my Shelby as a trade in. I wanted to trade the Shelby and my Rubicon in, on a Gladiator. Actually glad they didn't take the trade, as I'm hearing Jeep is voiding warranties on people who take their Gladiator out mudding. Shrug, I've done Extreme Jeeping and I understand there's a limit, but mudding, shouldn't be close to that limit, when their entire marketing is focused on it's ability to get across country in all types of terrain.

I have the “normal” ZR2, but I love it. I’m building it to be more of a pre runner, so heavily investing mid travel suspension. But even so, the small size of the truck with lockers means I can still navigate tight woods trails. All around great truck.

You do realize he owns Fieldcraft Survival, right? And an E9 gets paid fairly well, much less a CIA contractor, so it's not like he showed up broke, started AC and suddenly has money. Envy isn't valid. He works for it. If you spent 1/4 of the energy building yourself up, rather than trying to tear others down, you might have something to show for it. Might.

The entire reason the Rubicon is IT is it has front and rear electronic selectable locking differentials and a 4:1 transfer case plus a electronic sway bar disconnect , Dana 44s front and rear with 4 wheel disc brakes. The lockers tho are the big win with the rubicon.

I think these videos are cool... but few of us can spend such money on a dream-build like this. What would be really cool, would be tips to equip and augment the abilities of more common (and accessible) vehicles that middle class folks drive. Jeep, is great to have only if ya live in rugged territory(unpaved roads), and do a-lot of off-roading. The Jeep SUV's are adapted for roads, the Gladiator & Rubicon, are purchased by yuppies because they...look cool. But the comfort for long journeys is agonizing. So is the miles per gallon. Mine had a front (custom) bumper with shock absorption , as I usually hit a few trees on the trails. We just leave ours at camp(secured), with the chains on the tires for the nasty Winters(best time to stay at camp as no other human activity is around).

The Dometic PLB40 actually cost more than the dual battery system; you could have picked up a Painless Performance dual battery 250amp control system for $150, toss in a Yellowtop for $300 vs. the 850 bucks you dish out for the powerbank.

I just wish they would offer something other than the impotent v6 .. a turbo straight 6 , a diesel, a V8 .. anything but the Pentastar. Good luck getting any performance with this package without changing axles , ratios , etc..etc..

That Dometic battery is $850, you can most certainly set up a 12v system on a 2nd deep cycle battery for WAY less.

With all that weight the way it is, I see new axles and gears in the near future. Say an extra 300-400lbs with family members. Definitely. Plus food, water, and extra fuel. And the family's stuff. "Take only what you need to survive", from Spaceballs comes to mind.

Also best possible capability for when SHTF in reality is to be in with the elites and have some money or things of value that you can negotiate with that can get you out of bad situations. Also food, water, shelter, & guns.

Curious what you don't like about roof top tents aside from the cold factor. 6-8 months out of the year it would seem to be a non issue. I was curious if they just were not conducive to bigger guys. I've never tried one.

What about vehicles that are stock and dot have 10s of thousands of dollars in them for survival use? I have a Tundra with a leveling kit and oversize tires but I don't have $50,000+ like the other Tundra you reviewed. Need to see some normal everyday vehicles for survival.

I had 60's, but honestly, I was happier with smaller. In Moab, trying to get them to maneuver in tight Z-turns was a bitch. 45's would have been better on the XJ, at least on the front. Plus, any time you make something that's 'bullet-proof' another weakness shows up somewhere else.

Hey need your help. My Tubicon Hard Rock got taken to Mexico from San Diego without me... so I’m debating between a Gladiator Ruby and a built Ford E 350 van for overlanding, hauling, towing and bug out applications. Lmk & stay dangerous.
