I'm from PNG and seeing your videos makes me feel grateful to you and other pilots who are serving our people in the remotest part of the country. With the skillset you've developed flying in the rugged terrains of PNG could have propelled you up in your line of work should you choose to go to US but you chose to serve the people of PNG is priceless. May GOD bless and keep you and your family safe and happy. Tenkiu turu

Flew Helios, wheels and floats in Peru in the early 80’s. Man does this brings back memories. All our maps were hand drawn and corrected as we flew. No gps, no navaids and HF coms only. Sure wish we had the video ability to show what it was like. This is great. Thanks!
@TheFlyingZulu
@TheFlyingZulu Год назад
That's some really skilled flying you did with no moving map and and no navaids... That's is bonkers to think about. Did you have an autopilot system, co-pilot or somebody helping you with the navigation? I'm working on my commercial right now and there is just no way I could do that kind of flying you did back in the 80s. I guess if I really put my mind to it and was trained well on dead reckoning techniques I could do it, but wow it would be tough.

I can well imagine -- my FI was a bush pilot in Alaska and had some interesting stories. I can imagine one could run into all kinds of things, air cautions are often the same, no matter where you are in the sky, but landing and dealing with the bush natives must be another completely different experience! It's not the air that scares me, it's what's on the ground in these truly remote areas, like New Guinea! A pilot told me once, that when he was in the bush and opened the engine compartment on pre-flight, a snake struck out at him at its sudden disturbance -- whoa! Silly, I know, but I thought of that every time I checked things on my pre-flight, for a while, since there was grass and bushes all around the airport!

At least your welcoming party was friendly, I worked with Chimbo tribe on Bougainville Island, they were really nice people, my helper did not shake the tree to get all the coconuts on the ground, he asked me which coconut I wanted, he climbed up the tree picked out mine and one for himself, we sat on the beach and had our "lunch" then returned to our workshop, even in those days 1971 he was aware of robbing the environment and causing damage if it was not required, lovely person he was, Dipo was his name, I will always remember him.

I can appreciate the multitasking skills needed to fly solo, even for an experienced pilot. But I also appreciate the time it took to set up multiple cameras all over the plane before the flight, then organize -- in correct sequence -- all of the different views and scenes in post-production. Good work.

Appreciate the follow along narrative, and to see how flying times have changed in PNG, at least in the Nav. equipment. No round dials, though VFR & scud check back in the 50's 60's and some 180's to try a flight another day is how my folks remember it. Born in Lae, we often sat in the back of a DC3 with feet up on the Cargo. Lived in Madang before returning to the States in 1964, some good years then. One thing more, is your 208 female or male, natives wanted to know. Kids are the same in any language or jungle...they usually had great smiles. The Lord Bless. Tim Wegenast

I love the sound of the engine from the microphone. The avionics array and general cockpit view is impressive to me as I haven't seen anything like it for more than thirty years. Back then the touchscreen displays weren't yet a primary device, likely due to the fact digital technology was still developing. The analog six-pack was still in every military platform we had in the American military inventory. Really enjoyed this video and the quick narration from a knowledgeable pilot! My combine experience has paralleled his experiences onboard, but all that can come to a quick end with a simple glitch in one controller, one poor connection, one simple update. Wishing you constant safe flights every time. Still scared of flying the plane myself though its what I'd love to do.

Very nice; I've flown on several commercial flights (about 20) in PNG while retracing my father's footsteps from WW2; wasn't a pilot then but looking back from my current bush plane experience - amazing skills - hat's off

Great video, you're clearly an accomplished pilot and have a clear understanding of what Simmers want.

Fantastic journey. Thanks Ryan. Wonderful and clear description of every step of the way. This video shows what level of expertise is needed for bush pilots and missionary pilots. Very impressive! God bless your work and keep you safe "under His wings."

So this is very much what "Most of the large airliner pilots would call a landing briefing??" specially when there is "Non conventional landing conditions" that view from the wing just before landing was stunning! great video.. thank you for posting it..

which part did you watch to make you realize how piloting a plane is risky? Btw bush pilot is the riskiest piloting because of the uneven grounds and the runway isn't completed or there isn't in the first place, plus the runways are sometimes in a remote location

Really well done, well filmed.... I'm only an armchair pilot but I can see flying is an endeavor in which you can't make mistakes! I hope people appreciate how much prep and training one has to do as a pilot.
