In this video Jay takes apart all the components of the passive side landing gear on our 2013 KZ Durango Bunkhouse. One of the internal pins sheared off and had to be replaced, but it made a great opportunity to walk through taking the gear off, rebuilding it, and putting it back on.
No parts were replaced in this video we only needed a new tension pin.
Full time RVing with a family is not always easy, but it is always worth it. Through our adventures we share tips, tricks and inspiration for how to maximize the good parts without getting overwhelmed by the tough parts.
In these RV reno/upgrade videos we share they whys and especially the hows of the things we have changed in our camper to make it the best fit for our big full time family. Every upgrade we do is DIY and shared here step by step. We have no construction, carpentry, electrical, or other background or training. Jay does most of the upgrades and he is a former pastor, so you can rest easy that if he can do it….so can you.
Find Your Crazy chronicles the epic adventure of a full time RV family with seven kids, five adopted and two with special needs, as they travel the country to visit every continental National Park along with their two dogs and turtle. Join them as they experience Faith, Family and Fun together

I recently had my jacks slow right down and stop. Switch was burnt out. Replaced switch. Jacks still slow. Took the top caps off and put a bunch of grease on the two bevel gears. Took motor and gearbox out. Took gearbox apart, cleaned out old grease, installed new grease. Put motor and gearbox back in. Grease zerks can't be used, too close to the wall. I removed them, sprayed a ton of white lithium grease in the zerk holes. Had battery checked, failed load test. Replaced battery. Ran the jacks down about 15 inches, cleaned the legs, sprayed lithium grease on them. OMG, the jacks now work better than when I bought the trailer 5 years ago!

Excellent work! I suggest using grease on those bevelled gears in the future.

Thank you SO MUCH. We are camping and our landing gear failed as we were leveling/setting up. Your video showed us how to fix our problem and save our trip!!! Our owners guide was useless. We had scheduled a mobile repair service and we’re able to cancel that service call and save us big bucks!!!! Great video and we’re now subscribed to your channel!

My lead jack failed on my 2012 Fuzion When I tried to remove it,it would not release. Upon closer inspection I found that it had been welded on the bottom support bracket. I had to use my Dads all to cut the weld off. What a pain.

Fabuloso! Excellente' ! I have exactly this problem now. She said, it might be easier to buy a pair of new jacks. Naw, new jacks are painful. This is the lesson I needed today. I also need to copy and catalog (this and other lessons). You're a Gentle Man. Thank you.

It is certainly hard to beat a fix that cost less than a dollar and about an hour. It held up for us for almost 9 months of full time living. We did eventually have to replace the entire thing, but not for some time.

I have seen problems with these gears in several videos. The basic problem is that jacking action has stretched your tube out of square and is letting the gears get too far apart. Build two straps to pull the side of the tube back in. HD, Lowe’s, tractor supply all have steel bar stock that you can cut and drill to wrap the tube. After the side is flat again everything will work a lot better. If there is room you can leave the wrap in there after installation. I would use 1/4 x 2 flat bar to make the bars and 3/8 bolts to pull them together but to work right the side of the tube has to be flat

I have a self leveling system but I think the problem I'm having is the same as yours where the pin is digging into the top of that part and the gear is dropping down because mine was skipping and would not move once I raised it all the way up but if I put weight on the thing it engages and lifts which would make sense. The weight just pushes the gear back up into making contact. I will have to connect it to my truck and raise the jacks all the way up and if it skips again, which I'm sure it will, I will have to do this mod with the washer. You probably just saved me a ton of trouble shooting and money, thank you very much for this great video, your my hero today lol.

Excellent video, thank you for taking the time to make it. Slow, clear and understandable, thank you, that's how i need information like this for me to 'get it'. LOL I'm handy, but not always confident so videos like this gives me that confidence to at least try. I like to watch videos such as this long before I actually might need to do a repair (on what I'm watching) so I have a basic idea before I am in a bad situation. I like to know what I'm up against and if I'm on the road I don't always have access to internet and forget getting a tech out in any reasonable timeframe. Videos like this help give me a broad overview of my rigs components, saving me tons on labor to have someone else (when you can get someone else!) to do what I should be able to do myself. To be honest, until I watched this video (thankfully by chance) I never would have thought to tackle a repair on the landing jacks. Just thought it was way more complicated, but now I feel I have just enough understanding of the inner workings to take this on myself should I need too. Anyway, thanks again!

I am with you. The only reason I tried it myself the first time was because we were out west and when I called a repair man it was going to be three weeks on the part and we were only going to be in the campground for three days. So out of necessity I gave it a try. Once I started I realized that it was not as big of a deal as I had originally thought.

Thanks for sharing. I took my landing gear apart (Ground level 3.0). Mine is different than yours. You have those gear cogs. Mine runs on like a 1/4 drive. Similar issue though, the through cotter pin snapped. Do you know where i can get a new pin or kit from? Looks like it's about 1-1/8" long and 5/16" wide. Lippert does not provide a service kit for this model of landing gears.

My tubing inside the black housing/tubing, slides freely up down. What do you think is wrong with it? It’s the part with the long threaded rod that extends and retracts.

Thank you for the video! This video helps me understand the inner workings a lot better of my jacks. One needs to be repaired (motor side). I have to help it go up and down so I'm guessing bottom the screw connection to the inner leg is broken or the pin is broken so it won't go up and down by itself
@FindYourCrazy
@FindYourCrazy 2 года назад
Yes, that seems right. Once you open up the top you’ll be able to quickly see the problem since there are so few parts. Unfortunately getting the drive leg out is not as easy as the follow leg… but it’s not too bad.

Questions about supporting the rig to get the leg out. Where can you place the jack that the stress won't damage the framing of the camper? and could you just hitch up and then retract the landing gear legs letting the truck hold up the camper as you work? Thanks again!!
@FindYourCrazy
@FindYourCrazy 2 года назад
My frame is a really solid I beam. So I just made sure the jack was right in the middle. I don't think there is anything to worry about there, at least not on my rig. You could certainly try the truck, but I don't think you would have enough room left in front of the rig to be able to work. When my truck is connected to my rig I am only left with a couple of feet between the front basement access on the rig and the tailgate of the truck.

@@FindYourCrazy Thanks, I'm actually trying to figure what went wrong with my rear leveler. I have the Lippert ground control 2.0. We parked back at the storage facility and I was having all kinds of trouble getting it to level front to back (?) when all of a sudden the motor on the left rear leveler jack just fell off!!! ???? I can't figure what happened, I think the shaft from the motor to the gears sheared off?? I can't even see how it was mounted to the jack itself?? never ends.

Thank you for your video! It is very helpful. I have been following it very carefully. I’ve ran into a problem, though. I cannot get the pin out that sits right above the u-bolt. I’ve tried pushing it out with a screwdriver with no luck. I even drilled a hole in the side of the leg so I could punch out the pin. That hasn’t worked either. Do you have any suggestions?
@FindYourCrazy
@FindYourCrazy 2 года назад
Wow that is really annoying. I don't think I would have thought to drill through the side to get at it better, that was a great idea! I have never seen that issue before. All I can think of is that maybe the pin was bent slightly, which would prevent it from coming out. But that would be a little strange as the pin really doesn't carry any weight it just holds the U bracket in place which in turn holds the weight. But it could depending on any other issues you have with the leg. Either way I can only think of two options. First is to use an oscillating multi tool, like the dewalt DCS356C1. This would allow you to get the blade down to cut one side of the pin off, then (if it is bent) you should be able to just punch it out the other side. Second is to use the hole you have already drilled in the side of the housing and then using a longer bit to actually drill the pin out. Just go slow and careful because if you damage the drive shaft you'll end up having to replace the entire unit. Once you get it done I would love to hear back if you have a minute on what worked. God's speed and best of luck!
@madskittles77
@madskittles77 2 года назад
I ended up using a multipurpose tool with a steel blade to cut one end of the pin and then I was able to punch it out through the hole I had previously drilled.
