Because that building isnt supposed to be used as an apartment building. It's supposed to be commercial, therefore there isnt supposed to be any one there 24/7. As long as there are no children there (depenants) you can shut the power off. Although if you ask me, it sure looks like an apartment building to me.
I think it should be explained how this property could advertise apartments for rent for decades if it’s not zoned residential. I know people who have lived in this property back in the 70s 80s. So how have the owners been able to rent to individuals for this long? As a homelessness youth I actually looked at renting a place there, and it was a health hazard and a rats nest back in the late 70s. One can only imagine what they have been able to get away with

Legally they can stop paying rent. The landlord is a slumlord. Where’s the City Attorney? This is a major health hazard. The city should use eminent domain and take the building. They need to sue and have their relocation costs paid for.

It is because our public servants lack logical compassion. Logically it makes no sense to bring others from another country an make sure they are comfortable and their needs are met while the citizens who have worked, served in he armed forces, paid these public servants salaries and into the system,go without.

The landlord broke the law his building was commercial and wasn't supposed to have tenants, they need to get a pro bono lawyer and sue for relocation money.
The utilities are off because no one has the utilities in there names or are willing to do so. The light stays on if the bills are paid. Utilities are not usually included in rent especially if your in separate apartment units.

So instead of wasting money on court cost after they disi gi e all tents written notice to leave they disi not they turned water lights off they were warned they even said in the story they qere given notice to leave in apply time as well . These squatters (maybe not them) have had a free ride once someone else’s back for over a year and a half. No one helped us homeowners. Renters won’t even face consequences while landlords (small ones) lose everything they ever worked for. Most have 1 or 2 properties they’re planning on for retirement or to hand down. Now they lose it all because people won’t pay. I can’t feel bad for squatters.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and bet that these tenants haven't pay rent since Feb. 2020. Water and electricity wasn't shut down by property owner, it was turn off by the city for non-payment.

I remember a firehouse that sold as a residential house. Later the city tried to claim the owner could not live in it and tried to fine him. Not saying that's what is going on here, but how did the owner make this building into apartments and not get caught a long time ago? Something else is going on and I doubt the people are paying rent like the video says because there is no way they should and no way the owner could kick them out before the city closes him down anyway. Should've deposited their rent $$ into escrow at the civil court house dept. This is unreal in the USA when greed takes president.. The judge should arrest the owners and have them live there till the winter is over..
Do they mail rent in? Hand it to landlord? Online? I doubt any of those. Im sure utilities got shut off for nonpayment too. Fact is they cannot afford anything better and forcing landlord to fix this dump up to compliance will make it way out of their price range. He did not mention how much rent they pay which really makes me wonder. It’s probably rent control very limited how much you can get. As you can see the majority of the people keep their apartments filthy and after a while you just give up trying to maintain property. So many times they blame the landlord which in some cases they’re at fault but in most cases it’s usually the tenants.
Reason like this is why I cannot live in the big city because I like having space out from under other people. I chose a small city and it was the best decision I ever made

Many who could pay just didn't and still don't, considering the Moratorium has been extended until January 2022. Non rent-related evictions are backed up at least 18 months, so technically these people have at least 2 years until they can legally be forced out. If they all did pay rent,, the landlord still has to evict them because the people are living in an uninhabitable (commercial) building. I feel the landlords frustration. He still has to pay taxes and utilities and have tenants destroy his property. He has to pay to file many Notices to Quit and then individual evictions, pay someone to serve them and then wait at least 2 years to go to court for each individual apartment. There are also fees for court costs.. Then he has to chase these people for all the back rent they owe and I doubt he'd be able to collect from any of them IF he can find them all. These people get all the help and sympathy while the landlord gets spit on. I'm speaking from experience, so feel free to AMA.
They say that tenants have all the rights and landlords have basically none but that isn’t true. People can be booted due to the neglect of the landlord. The landlord can evict in weeks but tenants living with squalor caused by the landlord only have the option to pay into an escrow at court and wait. So they essentially still have to pay for the months that the property was a s***hole
It is good that the tenets are working together, because when you are united, you have a much stronger voice. They should not leave. They should reach out to a community group that can possibly assist with plumbing and reconnecting the water services.
Its not an apartment building. Its a commercial building. You need to have occupancy permits for apattments, ans there are rules as to what constitutes an apartment, so how come no one noticed the building was being used as apartments? Parody of nightmares.
