@@nirmelmathew I kind of touched on it when I first explained the Lost city. Basically if the Lost City is placed on a mouse clearing, that clearing takes in the properties of rabbit and fox as well. If you recruit with a mouse card you still only get 4 Corvid Warriors but if you do it in fox or rabbit, because the Lost city is technically a fox/rabbit clearing you now have 5 clearings where you get to recruit. Just remember that on the player board it doesn't say you only recruit 4 warriors, it's just that you usually recruit 4 warriors because that's the number of clearings of each suit in the absence of the Lost City.
@@nirmelmathew The last action of Birdsong for the Corvid Conspiracy is recruitment. You spend a card to recruit 1 warrior in each clearings of the same suit (except for the clearing with the Cat's Keep, obviously). Normally, you can get 4 new warriors every turn, but with the Lost City landmark: Let's say that the Lost City is placed in a mouse clearing like in the video, it means there are now 5 Fox and Rabbit Clearings on the board! So if the corvid spends a Fox card to recruit, they recruit in all 4 normal fox clearings + the Lost City clearing!
Remembering the landmarks, and looking at the video lenght, I thought to myself "what is there to discuss about for 30 minutes? They are just 6 landmarks, what more can there be?" Well, I was pleasantly surprised about the new wordings/rules, and I really appreciate the insights, especially on the Lost City, there were a lot of interesting interactions I never thought about, it really sounds like the best landmark to force some interaction. As for the conclusion, I really like the shorts videos, they clarified some things I didn't even knew existed, but I would like to tell you that i LOVE long, articulated videos, and they are the main reason I instantly subscribed to your channel. Your way of speaking is very clear, you have a great way of ordering concepts so that you make others understand the basic one and then articulate into more complex ones starting from those, and you basically go over everything and I find that cool. I know they are way more complicated to do because you need to take into account every tiny interaction etc., but I like your long videos and really hope you keep doing them, since I feel there are a lot of topics you could cover, from hirelings in general to single hirelings (I think each hireling would fill a decently long video considering the interactions they can have with each faction), each factions' strategy guide (really loved your Keepers guide, as I already stated in a comment there) and why not even some gameplay if you happen to play it on TTS/Digital. TL;DR: loved the video, as I love all of your long videos and hope you do more of them (but know they are not easy task so thank you for putting the work on these no matter how many you do).
Wow! I really appreciate you taking the time to say all that, thank you so much. I will definitely continue the long video, but because it takes time to make them I decided to start doing shorts so I could fill the gap between the long waits. I'd like to do Warlord strategy soon, I just felt that it was super important for people to have access to Keepers strategy tips as they're waaay harder to grok. Stay tuned for more content and thanks again for the support!
I was a bit skeptical about the landmarks, but now that I look at them, I realize they can add so much more spice to the game. I'll probably be buying these instead of the vagabond pack, which I was considering (none of my friends really enjoy vagabond)
Super helpful video, love the content. Stoked for my KS as well. One thing you forgot to mention with the lost city - is the favor of the suit cards if you play with the basic deck - those are crazy dangerous now burning up to 5 clearings in some cases. Keep up the great work
That's true, I totally forgot to pull out my base deck and consider how suits matter there as well. Fortunately I think most people will figure that one out on their own. Thanks for the feedback!
I'll probably do both but there's a need for tutorial videos at the moment with all the new stuff coming soon so I want to make sure it's all in place for the folks who get their expansions soon and want to know how to play it.
Thank you! Yes Landmarks are a nice add on to Root. A nice simple mechanism to fold in that can have big implications. A great idea for expansion content.
For revolting i would say you have to use two cards matching the base you are going to play, because otherwise it doesn’t really make sense, but having multiple revolutionist bases in the capitol city of the woodland is very cool thematically and i would totally allow that in my games
It's definitely a strange ruling but because of the way revolt is written, what I've said is the accepted ruling by the wider Root community. Because it says you pay 2 cards that match the clearing, you can technically pay any 2 cards and place any base since all bases match the clearing suit.
@@nitrorev Yeah i totally get that. I would read placing a matching base as placing a base matching cards and clearing, but i can see how that's up for interpretation. I'm going to say that you have to use matching cards for my games anyhow, both because the rule can be read two different ways, and because it doesn't make sense thematically for a fox and a mouse to make a base for rabbits haha
LOL, i just read through the law and saw that, your ruling is just objectiveley correct according to the rulebook, i still think my point stands about the thematic implications though
Haha, yeah reading the rules usually clears these things up. Thematically, the Lost City is the one place where all animals of the woodlands work together. So it's totally plausible that a fox and mouse would help set up a rabbit base.
So I haven't played with the E&P deck yet. Do partisan cards force you to also discard bird cards, like when the WA lose a base? Or do bird cards count as the suit you get to keep? If so you could keep your bird cards even with a triple partisan play in the lost city!
The law of Root has a ruling called forced effects (Law of Root 2.1.1 I) which states that yes you'd need to discard bird cards as well. Think of it like triggering outrage in a mouse clearing, if you don't have any mouse cards to give but you have a bird card, you must give the bird card.
@@nitrorev I checked 2.1.1 I, and it says that you must treat birds as a prompted suit; The only prompted suit is the suit of the cards you must keep, right? In that case, you'd keep the bird cards in the partisan's case.
@@randoman8654 That's what I thought from the Law wording, but the designers have clarified that using Partisans does require discarding your bird cards.
I could be wrong but I vaguely remember during the root winter tournament, for WA to revolt at the wild landmark, any suit can be used but both cards have to be the same. I wonder if this was a more official rule.
@@nitrorev Now I am thinking about organizer lol. I prefer everything from a single fraction stay together. But most organizer put the Eyrie cards away from the Eyrie. :( I am interested in the BGG GeekUp bags but I don't know if all the pieces from the bigger factions (Vagabonds, Duchy, Cats, Marauder) fit into those bigs.
Thank you! I have been looking everywhere for the Tower setup rule and and could not find it (I have the Tower from the underground expansion but not the landmark expansion, so I don't have the card)
Yes, Both Master Engravers and the Forge give an extra VP. The way the Disdain for trade works is that you only get 1 VP of the listed points but any extra points added are separate.
Yeah, I'm not sure why they ended up going with that name. On the Kickstarter page, it used to be called the Free City which to me made more sense. How and why is it lost? It can't be that lost if members of every species are living there, right?
Thanks a lot! I will definitely do a hirelings video but I need to actually play with them more to ensure that even I understand all the minutia. They create a lot of weird edge cases and I don't feel personally ready to cover them yet.
That's exactly right! You could choose to set up the Ferry as normal or you could play with Landmarks and have the chance to draw the ferry card. Then you'd be able to set it up in any coastal clearing.
Out of curiosity, is there a forum or social media that Root players primarily use to exchange strategies or even fan made content to test out? On the last Studio update from Leder Games, Cole mentioned the idea of alternative Eyrie leaders and I’ve been toying around with a few ideas. 😂 Anyway, keep up these amazing content videos! Very very helpful and easy to watch!
The Woodland Warriors Discord is the place for you! It's the hub for fan creations, setting up TTS games, rules questions, strategy and theory discussion, tournament organization and more. It shouldn't be hard to find.
How lost cities will work with "favour of.." cards? I presume that when a favour card is played the one who crafted it will decide (so basically every time everyone im the clearing but the crafted will be destroyed
Any favor card would also remove all pieces from the lost city since all 3 favor cards match the suit of the lost city. I may do a video on this later but I highly recommend switching over to the Exiles and Partisans Deck because favor cards are one of the only parts of Root that I don't like and this could have been designed better.
Nope, I have been mentioned on the Podcast by name but I am not one of the hosts. Those guys are really cool though and a big inspiration for me. Everyone who likes Root should check out the Woodland War Machine podcast, it's great stuff. Which host do you think I sound like by the way? I'm so curious 😄
@@original1up If you use Discord you should join the Good Times Society, we have a whole community discussing the podcast and all things Root over there.
You mean gameplay over physical, TTS or digital? I have considered doing some gameplay video of me playing the digital version where I comment on what I'm thinking in that moment or explaining the decisions I make. If you want to watch me play a TTS game, I participated in the Winter tournament hosted by Guerric Samples a few weeks ago. You can watch it on his channel. My game was Round 2 game 26: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eyzDKK8jrH0.html
@@nitrorev I watched the video of the tournament but I don't really have the knowledge of to understand the strategy behind it. I'd like something like that, but more for beginners. I liked the format, but digital or in person would also be cool.
