It's confirmed that Lando Norris had talks with Red Bull, ahead of signing his contract extension with McLaren. So, what do we think. A mistake to pass up a potential Red Bull opportunity, or not?

Absolutely spot on in my opinion. Lando is a fantastic driver and given the right package I think the title fight is the long term goal, as you said, easily switch to RB for some wins but that's not what he wants.

McLaren have gone from competing with Ferrari for 3rd last year to competing with Alpine for 4th this year. As good as it has been for Lando to come straight into one of the big name teams and establish himself as team leader there, unless McLaren make that leap to genuinely competing for race wins next year then I've no doubt he will be looking elsewhere for a seat in a car that can.

@@utkarshverma7 I Think the original Mclaren package was quite flawed, with narrow sidepods and a high front wing. Hence why they haven’t had much major development. I’d assume they have been pouring resources into heavy 2023 changes.

The only 3-4 drivers at the moment who are even close to MAX on the grid are probably Lec/lewis/alonso/and some times russel, and i still think think max would would win with all 5 in same car.

Lando is currently the big fish in a smaller pond. And I think he likes it that way. If the pond gets bigger nice one, he's their number one guy so he's on top. If mclaren never improve then he can always blame the machinery and go down as a 'could have been great' driver

I think that true, if the pond doesn't start to shrink. Then I think he is too big and he has to change the team or he will get really frustrated and unhappy. When Mclaren stays in the Top 4-5 teams and he can get Podiums from time to time, I think he stays

I think it's entirely up to McLaren to try and keep Lando happy there. He's consistently the best driver in the midfield and so far this season the only driver not racing for Red Bull, Ferrari or Mercedes to snag a podium. But I don't think he'll settle for another 2-3 seasons of just being the best of the rest. Right now I'm sure he's content with being the number 1 driver at McLaren and picking up an occasional podium, but there will come a point where he wants more than that and I'm sure he's well aware that teams know what he's capable of. If McLaren doesn't improve much I can easily see him replace Lewis when he eventually retires.

@@raisaga9273 honestly the bigger why move is mclaren dropping ricciardo for piastri. Ok i get ricciardo isn't what he used to be(though i believe its more the car which has declined in performance more so) but regardless norris strives from experienced drivers guiding him has a father figure so to speak and so i would have kept ricciardo on and not gotten piastri despite the potential he may have.

I know we have no idea of the level of Oscar Piastri in F1, but I'm afraid Landon could fall in a bit of a RedBull Ricciardo situation where Oscar gets better and better and ends up being driver n°1. Do remember that George did handily beat Lando in F2 for the title in his first ever season. Though I agree that it is difficult to judge, I would argue that at the moment George has that edge over Lando. He didn't win all his previous formula championships(which he competed against Lando) with just luck thats for sure.

If Lando loses to Piastri then a move to Redbull might be smart. Otherwise staying at mclaren seems the best option for his career. But he has to beat Piastri if he wants to put himself out there as a team leader and/or future world champ - and given Piastri's pedigree Im not sure that will be an easy task at all in the medium to long term.

In my opinion Lando is in the top 5 drivers in F1 at the moment alongside Max, Lewis, Charles and Fernando and if he can get a car capable of challenging for wins I think he’ll easily take advantage of it. Specifically his quali pace is second to none compared to the majority on the grid but still it would be interesting to see what he can do in a quick car. It’s hard for Lando though when you are surrounded by drivers like Max, Charles and George who are in much more competitive cars so it could be hard to challenge for a WDC. I can see Lando at Merc when Lewis retires or even at Red Bull when Checo or Max leaves.

I'd like to see Max - Sainz (as a cerebral no.2) bring back their Toro Rosso team-up, Lewis - Russell in the Merc and Charles - Lando in the Ferrari battling it out! I think that Mclaren would be good for him since they can wrap that car around him like redbull do with Max and then bring Mclaren back to winning ways but that would take time whereas redbull is instant success. But again it all depends what happens to redbull with the cost cap and if they still wanna keep Perez to be that perfect No. 2 and if piastri hits the ground running. Redbull for Norris could turn out into a situation like Max and Danny Ric which could either work wonderfully constructor wise or end in shambles and then Norris feels like he doesn’t get as much support as Max does, etc.

I dont think they get cars build around them. They are just levels above there teammate. Max and Norris said at the start of the season there car was build more for the teammate and they still beat there teammate consistently. The real talent shows when you have a car you dont know at all.

I'd be interested what year this was. If it was for a Toro Rosso drive in 2018 he was right to stay at McLaren. If it was for Red Bull for 2021 then he should of gone to Red Bull.

Why go to any other team where he'll effectively a number 2 driver? There's nothing to say McLaren won't improve. Ferrari did, and only a couple of years ago they were bloody awful. Choosing the right team at the right time is like being blindfolded, spun around and then getting a bullseye on the dart board.

It was in DTS when McLaren was resigning Lando that the top teams went after him too. Kinda weird this is news now. But also there’s something to be said about being the “chosen one” for a team - max at redbull and Lando at McLaren. They’re safe, they know they have a seat, they are the team favorite, etc. that takes a lot of stress off

Call me a cynic, but… That negotiation could have been for 1 of 2 teams, obviously. AlphaTauri, and Red Bull Racing. If it was for: - AlphaTauri, would it really have been worth his while? it’s a backwards move. Although with arguably better forward prospects. - Red Bull, does that not then mean Marko/Horner view him at the Perez level? By which I mean, they’re not going to be even considering - at least in my opinion - an Alonso, Hamilton, Vettel type “multi-wdc” level driver who could end up battling Max for points/wins/etc to ruin the harmony. Also maybe someone will prove me wrong, but Lando is apparently suited to the lazy front of the McLaren, if many reports are to be believed, which has him using the brakes to heavily manhandle the car into entering a corner. In an oversteery car such as the Red Bull is reported to be - it would also raise many questions as to how he would adapt. He has never driven an F1 car outside of the McLaren ecosystem (that I’m aware of)

As much as I'd love to see 2 of these next gen guys in same car, I don't think RBR is the best team for that. They have always favoured 1 driver over the other. They don't really let their guys fight, like McLaren under dennis or Mercedes. Yes every team has resorted to team orders but like we saw this year, RB does this even before there is a actual championship risk, they did so w/ perez/2014 seb/webber etc. IMO Lando/Piastri whoever develops better in the next couple of years will probably get Lewis's seat upon retirement unless there is a major shift in hierarchy of cars with McLaren at top or maybe audi actually gets serious about a works team in the future

No you're wrong there. It's intelligente driving and knowing when it's your fight and when Not. Also it's often an order from His Team too. But he fights alright, there are a lot of examples. Just in Singapur he showed it against Max. But he also knows when fighting against a Car a second or so faster a lap could destroy His own race against the Cars he's fighting against. So he picks them very carefully and rightly so. In F1 the bigger picture is the most important thing.

Keep Lando where he's at, both for the sake of RB and for his own. He'd perform as well as Danny is doing in McL and would get the same treatment as well of having the car not developed to his liking. Checo's experience is what's saved that second seat, and even then, there's folks iffy on if he should stay, so definitely not doing better than Checo

I strongly think drivers should strive to be in the fastest car possible regardless of whoever will be their teammate. Bottas did not win a championship staying at Mercedes but neither did Ricciardo by moving away from Red Bull. Valtteri however is still going to be in the sport and racked many more podiums. If you're not gonna beat a driver in the same car, you won't beat them in a slower car. Ricciardo thinking Renault would become more competitive than Red Bull was very opportunistic. Red Bull and Mercedes are the only two teams who have finished in the top 3 since 2013.

Agree with everything tommo. Mclaren probably the 3rd best team with the 4th/5th best car. Lando’s only real choices to move up are merc or redbull. If lewis leaves next year we will see a real silly season. Great video

I reckon Lando should have hopefully I am wrong but it's over a decade since Mclaren were fighting for a championship they haven't been close to that in that time either. When they did finish 3rd they were miles off in points. So I just don't see them supplying a car capable of challenging for wins anytime soon. Maybe at the next rule change is their best hope?

Staying was probably the best move. Lando is still young and Red Bull likely isn't going anywhere so a gamble on McLaren cathing up to the leaders is worth it. If it's clear McLaren is falling behind I'm sure one of the top teams would be interested in him provided he keeps performing well.

I dont really get the move (from Red Bulls side) unless Perez completely drops in performance. He is “good enough” for RB since they wont want someone that would mess up Verstappens championship runs but he can win, get podiums and be up there every race and that produces driver (for Max) and constructors world championships.

Absolutely not. Even if he managed to match Verstappen on pure pace, he’d be going to a team who’s car and setup is heavily based/biased towards Verstappen which wouldn’t be the right route to challenge for a championship. I also think he’d struggle; Perez has done very well in that car, but he has over a decade of experience for different teams. The likes of Gasly and Albon (although they’re probably not quite the same calibre as Lando) significantly struggled which put their F1 careers as risk or at least slowed down their progression.

Spot on, like you say I'd definitely say Norris is better off staying at McLaren and making himself the "Verstappen/Leclerc/Russell" of that team. He's still young and McLaren are at least making the right moves. If there were rumblings of one of Max, Charles, or George wanting leave their teams, then maybe yeah take a punt. But otherwise he's better off staying put as most teams on the grid now have their "long term bet for the future", with the exceptions of Alpha Tauri obviously and probably Aston Martin, as while Stroll ain't going anywhere he's not quite who'd you pin Aston's hopes for success on init? It will be interesting to see what becomes of Piastri though, he's the most hyped rookie F1 have had for a couple of years so if he lives up to the hype it'll depend on how well him Norris work together as to whether Norris will want to stick around...

Considering Lando and Max prefer polar opposite setups, it's probably a good thing they aren't in the same team. Lando has guided McLaren down the path to building the most understeering car on the grid, and there is no way he'd get that privilege at RBR, especially when you've got Newey there too (who knows that more understeer equals slower overall car).

Excellent video and thoughts. Lando has age on his side and also was approached by RB as a junior but decided to go to Mclaren. As a team Mclaren have been held back by bad decisions prior to 2018 and not enough money to have what is needed to compete at the front. Full marks to Zak for reversing that position and an excellent signing in Seidl. It will be 2014 before Mclaren can punch their weight and at the end of that season Lando will still be only 24. He can then make his decision. I am not saying Lando is better than Max but he is certainly for me the best prospect to really challenge him as a driver. Marko said this year that lando is the only driver after Lewis he thinks has the talent to take on Max.There is also another factor in we have to ask the question, how long will Adrian Newey stay active at RB . I think when he puts his book away RB will not be the force they are now. RBs success is not all about Max its really all about Newey and a top driver in Max coming together. I cant see Max equaling Lewis as Newey has retired from racing once before and it was the new regs that awakened his interest. He is not a youngster any more and likes new challenges.

@@EntropicExergy Adrian left RB to design the Aston Martin Valkyrie and then yachts in the Americas Cup. He is 63 and I cant see him staying at RB for more than a couple of years now and leaving f1 for good. He doesnt need the money.

@@EntropicExergy He has been their before though winning multiple world championships with Vettel and then walked away to do new projects away from F1. His cars have won 10 constructors championships with four different drivers. There was a BBC documentary about him in his palatial home and he said that he had to have a challenge and not just tinker for a few years. The new regs was the reason why he came back this time.

Think staying with McLaren is the best option for him. People like to forget but Max also needed to be patient and have faith in the process and the team. When he joined Red Bull they where very clear the 3rd team on the grid. Not sure if can say that McLaren does have that winning pedigree still in them. So many people left since the time they where winning. You see it with Ferrari, they have obviously also that winning pedigree in them from when Räikkönen won them a championship in 2008. They also forgot how to win look at this season.

@@atmoz_ Interesting question. Personally i think they weren't able to do much with his feedback. Michael stil had it, but the merc engineers were (and still are) not good enough for it. They suck at aero, as this year has shown. Remember that Michael did not have such a great run at merc, like he used to at ferrari. It wasn't untill that ridiculously OP engine that they started winning things. That engine covered it up quite well. Now that they have a lesser engine (compared to RB and Ferrari), their ineptitude at aero is displayed in full.

Biggest issue is, McLaren is a Engine Customer of a current F1 Works Team. In this day & age, to be successful, need to be a Works Team. McLaren need their OWN Works Team & it look unlikely now they will be in the next 10 years! Also, the Mercedes Engine is lacking power compared to last year…I don’t see McLaren being any better than a 4th Placed Team until perhaps 2026. Sure, maybe get the odd Win & Podiums, but Lando is kidding himself that he thinks being with a Customer Team will EVER give him a Chance to fight for titles…

Moving to Red Bull for Lando would not only mean partnering Max but also trying to beat Max in a car designed around Max, so yeah being at McLaren is his best choice

He’d go down as a hero for McLaren if he produces a Driver and Constructor’s championship for McLaren, think you’ll have a clear sight in 2-3 years time, Piastri and Norris will be McLarens best bet at progressing to that next level as long as Piastri hits the ground running

No young hot-shot would ever want to go to RB. They know they won't beat Max, regardless of the package, so they have a better chance at WDC in another team and hope for RB to trip themselves. Nobody knows this better than Lando.

McLaren carry themselves as Cool and with the times, always willing try being the flashy and sleek while also being competitive, its almost the opposite of ferrari who try to put themselves purely by history and all time prestige

Once I saw what RB did to Gasly mid season I never would sign with them as a driver. That’s extreme risk. Imagine if McLaren just dropped Ricciardo in July 😢

If you read how Gasly behaved towards Adrian Newey, the man who designs championship cars, you would understand. Any team would do that with a driver that has such a big mouth yet little to show for.

I personally think he should've gone to Red Bull. It's better to be beaten by Max most weeks but still have a chance to win, than being in comfortably the 4th fastest car and unable to even fight for podiums. Checo beats Max some weeks, he's pretty good around street circuits. Checo has wins, Lando frankly only got to fight for a win in Sochi last year because Valterri and Bottas were both starting from the back and Hamilton was just coasting, thinking of his own championship rather than risking it for a win that he didn't need. If Lando legitimately wanted to compete for a championship he needs to be in a top 3 team. McLaren are inconsistent. Red Bull has been fighting for championships, or at the very least fighting for wins on merit since 2009. McLaren have had many ups and downs

Obviously he didn't know at that time but as of circumstances now I think Lando needs to just focus on taking care of business with Piastri first and foremost rather than think about Red Bull. Because Lando being the Leclerc or Verstappen of Mclaren as of right now is no longer a given long term. In fact it's anything but if Oscar is what we think he is.

I feel like any young driver won't really want to take a risk to go to redbull while max is still there. The past few years have shown everyone on the grid how terrible that car is for any number 2 driver.

The 2nd seat of red bull is great for young driver with little of no experience not for someone like lando who has lead a team & who wants a chance to win the championship. Red bull will be max's team while he is still in it. Lando along side Russell Post Lewis maybe

Was leaving Renault really a bigger mistake than leaving Red Bull? I don't think so. Yes Max was obviously the guy Red Bull were grooming for the future, but Ricciardo was still taking wins and basically ran from the challenge to a team that was nowhere near close to being a race winner, let alone a title challenger. And the results in his first year with Renault were not exactly stellar, scoring about a third of the points he scored the year before. Yeah the car improved the next year but overall, Renault finished two positions behind McLaren in the constructors championship so it certainly looked like it was a better move to go there than it looked for him to move from Red Bull to Renault. And while people say that he has been a disapointment since going to McLaren apart from that one win, he scored nearly as many points as he did in his second year at Renault last year, but yes he was overshadowed my Lando. And McLaren was well ahead of Alpine as well. Nobody could have seen his monumental downfall coming this year. The simple theory was that his move to McLaren should have been a move back up the grid, but things just did not work out for whatever reason. It was a better move than his move to Renault, just a shame he messed it up.

He could go to any other team and have a pretty good chance to beat his teammate, but not in Red Bull. Well, maybe if he goes to Red Bull and somehow him and Max manage to keep goid relationship while they hight each other for titles, maybe he could put together one better season than Max, if he stayed for a long time.

its been taking away the exitement to have this constructors title intefering with the drivers for ever. Would it be not even amazing to see drivers compete in different spec cars every race, show their versatility in adapting while the constructors can challenge each other prviding interesting, efficient, creative racecars. And it begs the question right now if the current tech race has any benefits outside the sport anyway. And might not even serve any public interest inside the sport. So, constructors should apply with concept racecars of all sorts to have a chance to provide cars for top tier racers. Experiment with new automotive ideas which we need anyway and make the driver challenge much more exiting too. Many more Tracks in the World would be in question, we could have Formula E and Extreme E together within F1 The only reason F1 is so popular is top drivers and very good media coverage. The open-wheel cars, the money, the constructors, the fia rules are all pretty dull and annoying anyway.

Lando deserves a team where he is granted being the n1 driver. The issue is that he'll have to rely to much on McLaren improving since I don't see any of the top 3 teams dropping either Max, Charles or George (bar a spectacular drop in performance). Only last option will depend on how good Audi turn out to be when they come round. Can't speak too soon, since you never know, but he could have a similar issue as the one Daniel had throughout his career of always deserving to be n1 driver, but not having the space to be it in a top team

Red Bull would be idiotic to break up Perez and Verstappen. Perez was nearly out of F1, he knows that, and now he can win races. Teams aren't knocking down Perez's door to make him the #1 driver, either. It's a win-win. I do think Lando's play is to stay where he is, see where McLaren's car goes, and jump into the Mercedes once Hamilton leaves. People forget that there is no guarantee Russell is the guy, and Lando-Russell would make an all-British team, which I think would make for a good relationship, even though it would be a competitive one. I still think long-term Mercedes will be a better team than McLaren. I don't see a spot opening up at Ferrari, either, and I think Norris is considered to be the best young driver from a mid-tier team. Norris to Mercedes is the play.

Lando is possibly the driver with the highest potential on the grid currently maybe alongside George. They have both outperformed a pretty mid car. I think he will be wasted talent and potential WDC material if he stays at McLaren and they don’t make a win / championship contending car sooner rather than later. He has repeatedly shown he is deserving of a car like that and if McLaren can’t deliver he has earned his right to move if he wants to.

Lando weighs at least 7+ kg less than Max. That would make a difference in performance by itself. Dont underestimate Lando . Max has ALWAYS had a better car than Lando his whole career.

You are aware that weight is added to drivers that weigh less than 75kg? As long as you aren't over 75kg, which Max isn't, it doesn't matter.

Lando Norris arguably will be a championship winner but not in a McLaren. Yes staying in McLaren for now is worthwhile however I don't see him winning a title where he is right now.
