Make no mistake about it, landscape and nature photography can be a frustrating business and this video is proof of just that!
In this episode I head to Blea Tarn in the Lake District for a dawn shoot where I cover the technique of panoramic photography. However, due to reasons that will be revealed, I then go shooting spring flora in broad-leaf woodland only to save the day with a fabulous image taken at Latterbarrow Nature Reserve. Landscapes are generally my thing, however I’ve just invested in a Nikon 105mm macro and some extension tubes on the back of your videos Simon, just hope I can do them justice, if I can get anything half as good as yours I’ll be happy 👍

@@Midnight_Rambler brilliant, you’ve just opened up a whole new world. As a landscape photographer, this extra kit will give you lots of scope when the weather lets you down.

Another absolute stunner, you are a natural in front of the camera as well as behind it. Your knowledge of all things natural is phenomenal giving your videos that extra interest along with the photography.

Hi Mark I've been plugging away at photography for years and I am really enjoying this new addition to it. I am a perfectionist though and if anyone saw me doing the filming, they would laugh out loud for sure. Most of the takes are the result of between five and ten attempts. My hard drive is full of potential "It'll be alright on the night" clips!

Lovely video. Fantastic autumn shot at Blea Tarn. Also thought the macro shots were great. Weather forecasters must be the only workers who actually keep their jobs when they are wrong all the time :-))

Very enjoyable video and well put together - not a flora shooter as such but it was a good wake up call that sometimes it's not always the bigger scenes that are out there. thank you.

I thoroughly enjoyed this Simon. You didn't get the water landscape you had in mind but came away with a lovely macro with that beautiful green bokeh & @ 400mm accomplished this as well... Really nice... I would consider this day, a good day of shooting... Bill Farr... :-)

Thanks Bill, I look back at this day fondly. It was quite the little adventure. And I just love long lenses for plants too.

Hello Simon. I found myself here while reviewing EVERY video in an attempt to find the bird-song mentioned in your 2019 end-of-year video (In hopes of winning that great print). Anyway, haven't found said bird yet, but it was just great to review all your older videos. This one, in particular, shows why so many of us love what you do. Including the crackling of the big map while you unfolded it in the front seat of your car, along with the napping shots, add that delightful but of spice that so many others on this platform would edit out. Thanks for that. And that last shot through the grass is stunning!

Thanks for watching again Peter. In fact your comment made me watch it again! It was good to look back at shooting with my Canon and the semi long lens. Just this week I have been cursing not having the option of a 400mm tucked in my bag! The longest I have now is a 160mm (128mm in 35mm full frame terms).

Thanks Steve, it's so nice of you to say so. I think it helps if people add videos to their favourites and share them but in reality, I have no idea. The channel has only been going since February, so it's still early days and nearly all the feedback has been amazing. It's fast approaching 2000 subs and seems to be gathering pace, but I do know of a couple of channels that started roughly the same time, which are now at 6000. To be honest, I'm honoured that anyone wants to watch me, but cheers all the same for that very generous remark.

Nice!! The autumn panorama looked wonderful! It must be even more beautiful in winter with sun and snow. Its always worth going slow and thoughtful about the equipment so that you don't leave anything! I once forgot a lens on the roof of a car while changing lenses... ..and I forgot about it!!!

No the MK 1 and I'm still really happy with it! I didn't feel that the Mk 2 offered me anything over the Mk 1 to justify the expense!

Nice video Simon, I think we are shooting much the same type of photos at the moment, I have just this week been photographing wood anenome and cowslips, also a few hoverflies, eristalis mainly, been trying to get some decent shots of linnets but they are tricky, wheatears are here now in good numbers. I am also an ecologist/photographer based in North Wales near Mold with similar interests looking at your photos.

It seems ridiculous that I am replying to you now, two years later but I just recently discovered a filter on YT that tells me who I have missed. So sorry, it was never my intention to be so rude as to not reply. I hope you are still shooting and battling your way through the constantly changing and challenging world that is ecology!

Hello Simon, That Cowslip shot was a beauty and being fortunate to have that long lens does the job well. Questions: (1) Did you shoot in manual exposure (2) What was the large aperture that you used as you did not mention on this occasion ???
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 6 лет назад
Hello Allan, The cowslip was shot with the maximum aperture of f/4.5 and on aperture priority mode.

Wonderful image at Blue Peter moment - suggestion: why not zoom in on the details and let us look at it longer before giving us the grand reveal?

I've noticed on other videos from the area the painted sheep. Do you know why they paint them? I'm curious. The pano was good even though you didn't get colors. Nice reflections. Here in the southern US, we have "fire ants" which make dirt mounds. Step in one and in seconds, you have hundreds of the nastiest creatures God created biting parts unseen. People die each year from reactions to hundreds of bites. You gotta love nature!
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 6 лет назад
I've a feeling it's to stop the sheep being stolen? Ooh they do sound bad. Our's certainly aren't that fearsome! Thanks for watching!
@cartonmardybum
@cartonmardybum 5 лет назад
Sheep are "painted" for a number of reasons. Often its to easily identify one farmers flock from others particularly in fell areas where sheep often escape to other fields. Farmers will also put particular marks on them to denote certain characteristics (eg foot rot, not producing lambs etc....often marking them out for culling) and lastly any dye marks on their hindquarters in mating season are usually an indication that that ewe has been "serviced" by a tup (the tups are made to wear blocks of dye on their chests so that when they mount the ewe they stain their backs).
