In this video I press home the need to get out and keep using your gear regardless of the weather. It's of the upmost importance to know your equipment inside and out so that when that all important image presents itself, you won't be left fumbling around for the correct settings, focal length or viewpoint. In total I created three new images during this film and none were planned in advance, which leaves me to my final point in that planning and preparation is not always needed to get good images.
This video was filmed in one of my favourite places, known as Duxbury Woods near Chorley in Lancashire. The woodland is classed as ancient semi-natural and contains a mixed woodland with broad-leaved and some coniferous areas.
By using these links below to buy your equipment, you are directly contributing a small amount to help me make more of these films for you to enjoy.

The shots are unique and provide inspiration in addition to their main purpose providing practice for the special shots when they are discovered. Thanks

There is a very powerful message here Simon and one that I agree with wholeheartedly. Regardless of the level of our photography (you - skilled professional; me - 'enthusiastic' amateur) it's important to practice. If I am out shooting in less than ideal conditions I often get other photographers telling me that the light is crap and that there is no point. My response to that is "Barcelona don't just tip up on a Saturday and expect to win"!
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 6 лет назад
Thanks Chris... I am however, only an amateur like you! I might tell you the light is crap, but I usually shoot something that suits it! I could have done this here, but maybe I'll do that on another film!

Thanks for this Simon. As I said before I'm loving the accessibility of your photography for those of us who get little chance to jet off to Antarctica for a photo jolly; it's nice to see through your eyes the opportunities that are all around us not that far away. I like the message too, there's nothing quite like having that muscle memory for setting up when the pressure is on. Familiarity with your gear really can be your best friend. Great Video, please keep them coming Mr Booth.

Great to here from you David and thanks for commenting again. As you know, I'm always on the look out for images and anyone who can find them at this time of year, will do well the rest of the time. Yes the reality for most of is that far off exotic places are but a dream, but you know what, I have travelled enough to know that Britain is great when it comes to photography. We have such a changeable landscape and it does it with such frequency, which is hard to find elsewhere.

Beautiful images. Even if they do seem ordinary. I really like the last one. We don't have that plant in Australia so it is new for me! Lovely to get out and just play and practice. I always get the better images when it is a happy wander without expectation like that. Just let nature show me some stuff and see what's there . . . .

Hi Denise. I had to watch that film again and it was interesting to see that even in 2018 I was still an advocate of just go out and see what you find. I think if Thomas had seen this he may have felt less singled out. The last shot was certainly the best and I do often say that sessions usually get better as the progress!

Enjoyed your video, the music was great :) Loved the photos, especially the tree bark. I love exploring our woodland areas, but I usually stay out over the summer months and here in Texas that'll be till mid to late September, too many snakes and mosquitos! So it was nice to see you wander around in the woods, I would have loved a closer look at those flowers there too, they looked lovely.
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 6 лет назад
Thank you Liesl Our native woodland areas are so accessible compared to other parts of the world and with the exception of the adder in certain regions and one or two plants, there's nothing at all to worry about. This flowers that you mention are from the Himalayan balsam plant. It's a serious invader to the UK and is threatening the native plants associated with damp areas in woodland and along stream-sides. That said, the flowers are beautiful and the insects love them.

Hi James You are right, it's much easier just to grab the bag and go, but making these films as you will know, there is an element of pressure to get something at least! I'm told by the many comments on one of my recent video's 'When is Enough, Actually Enough', that viewers want to see me fail and whilst that's all well and good for the viewer to know that they are not alone, in truth it stinks when it happens to you!

Thank you for this vlog Simon. I always love to watch your vlogs because they are always so relaxing to watch as well as very informative. I have been a very keen amateur photographer for many years (since early 80s) and have always loved taking close up images . I always got frustrated because I could never seem to get the images I wanted . So recently I eventually bought a dedicated macro lens and wow I am loving what I can capture :D What with my new lens and your informative videos I am now capturing some images I am really happy with . I liked the images you captured here especially the last one it was so pretty Thank you for sharing your wisdom and knowledge :D Teddy

Thanks Simon, I tend to carry lenses for most eventualities so I'm rarely stuck for a subject! The natural history knowledge goes back many years and I pretty much take it for granted, until I'm reminded. Viewers do seem to like that aspect of my films. Cheers for watching!

Water horsetail Phillip and yes me too. You can tell water horse tail from all the other horsetails because it has a hollow stem. When they grow in water, the stems fill with water and give the plant stability in the wind. They only grow here because they are sheltered by the trees.

Many thanks for your comment and interesting remark about black and white. For me, and it's just my view, black and white is suited to what I would class as fine art, and is often most successful when the composition is simplified, but with texture, simple shapes and contrasting tones. Out of the three images that I took, Im not sure any would be very good but if I were to choose one, then it would be the tree bark! The first two didn't have the tonality in for my liking!

Great video Simon, I think woodlands are one of the best places to hone composition and understanding of light that can be applied to other scenarios. At the moment I spend pretty much every evening practicing in my local forest (Delamere) whilst out walking the dog with no expectations of a good image but now and again come back with one I really like.
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 6 лет назад
I know Delamere Paul, although it's been a while since I have been. I noticed the last time I was there that the largest body of water (I forget its name) had a problem with New Zealand pigmyweed and I expect it's not got any better? It's a great forest though and excellent for fungi in autumn I seem to remember!
@markharris5771
@markharris5771 6 лет назад
Great video Simon, full of great tips for everyone. As someone else has mentioned, woodlands are far from easy to see a composition and it’s something I need to practice more. I have a feeling with this summer we are going to have a better Autumn than last year, which didn’t seem to happen. You’ve been missed, I hope you’re in fine fettle.

@Fotograffa
@Fotograffa 6 лет назад
It's officially called Shawme State Forest and it is located in Sandwich, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. In the summer the forest is turned into a campground and it would be impossible for me to go shooting there. Too many people and besides...in the summer they charge you to go in there in the summer. I'm grounded a lot in the summer because of the traffic and all the people. In about 2 weeks things begin to calm down and if I go out very early I should be able to get my shots and get back in before the traffic gets too heavy.

M B I almost did and yes it’s easily done if you don’t take care. It’s something which I am very mindful of normally but filming these can make you clumsy if you’re not careful! @SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 6 лет назад
Peter Robinson Thank you..I explained this unfortunate mishap already on another comment as this could quite rightly have been avoided. However, to put in it into context, simply walking across a local park will flatten the plants with every step you take, just as driving down the road during the summer kills thousands of important invertebrates that bats and birds rely on. The plant I happened to put my bag on is fortunately common and widespread in this instance! I think because it's a large plant, we want to shout and complain when we see damage occurring when in fact, the smaller overlooked species that we damage daily when we go out for a walk are equally important and in many cases, more rare and valuable!
@peter-robinson
