Landscape and Nature Photography | Does Planning Stifle Creativity

The definition of Creativity is: the use of imagination or original ideas to create something! With that in mind I ask, does planning stifle your creativity in the landscape and with nature photography? Answers below please!
I always thought that planning was fundamental to achieving great landscape images, but is this really the case I ask myself? I often find that when I plan, the images are rarely the ones that stick in my memory, or please me long-term. Every-time without fail, I am most fulfilled in my photography when I find the unexpected and achieve the result there and then. But if I am working on something planned, my creativity becomes parked to one side and there is nothing more I can add when finaly realising the image. When I plan a landscape shoot properly, the only thing left to chance are the weather conditions and even then, a huge amount of consideration is given prior to the event to place the odds greatly in my favour. With so much of the shoot taken under my control in advance, it seems there is very little left to enjoy on the day. I'm not suggesting we never plan again because if we find something unique whereby the conditions don't suit on that day, then we have to go back. But it goes without saying that nothing beats a surprise. So with that in mind, I am changing my direction and doing less planning and enjoying more spontaneity! This way I don't find myself stuck indoors waiting for the light for a given place when I could be out finding the next surprise and flexing my creativity.
In this film I head to the Seton Coast sand dunes in search of literally anything that grabs my attention. The images were OK and I have done better but at last, I was out and freed from the jaws of a plan.

I think you're right that too much planning can damp down that buzz you get when you photograph something unexpected. My family think I'm bonkers getting excited over a photograph I've taken of some creature I've found on my morning wanders, but for me, those are the images are far more unique and exciting... I've only recently found your videos and really enjoy your calm enthusiasm, so thank you for that. My dogs are still hunting around looking for the source of the squeak the lapwing made!

Personally I try not to over plan a shoot. Other than knowing where I want to go and what I’m likely to encounter, I allow the day to take its own course. I rely on my powers of observation, (honed over many years and not planned), and make sure that I am always ready. It has usually been the case that my best images come from the unexpected encounters with both nature and light. Neither of these commodities can be planned for. I look forward to your weekly videos, keep them coming.

My best and favourite photo on a february Glencoe/Skye workshop was on the first morning from the Hotel bar window. Just a combination of light, weather and the geometry of the view. I should have packed up and saved my money then, as all the rest were clones of everyone else's. I now go out with no plan and no expectations .... and every shot is a surprise and reward for keeping an open mind.

Hi Simon. I think you are right about too much focus on planning harming creativity. When I go out I mainly take wildlife photos. I think the reason I find it so exciting is because you can plan all you like (research the habitat, wildlife present at that time of year etc.) but usually you find that the memorable, get your blood pumping shot, is of the unexpected thing you encounter. Case in point. We went out at dawn to a local wild life reserve to photograph birds (herons was what we were planning on photographing) we spent 2 or 3 hours sat in a hide seeing nothing and were just on the point of leaving when two otters appeared in the pond we were watching. Those shots still take my breath away now. I loved your ragwort shot. It was a very artistic unexpected view of something that I see all the time. Thank you for the video and please keep the wildife and ecology snippets coming. I love watching them.

Thanks Elaine. The otter sighting must have been really special. I survey for otter all the time and they are now in many of our rivers. I caught two on a camera trap recently whilst monitoring a hole for badger evidence.

Really enjoyed the honest analysis of planning versus creativity - food for thought. And throughout all your videos I really like how you enliven it with all the flora and fauna information (glad I'm not the only fern enthusiast!), as well as emphasising the care everyone should take, both with habitats and the wildlife. It's so good to see the importance of fieldcraft coming to the fore.

Simon, I’m still working my way through previous videos that I’ve not seen. This was a particularly good video. The images, specifically the macro images, were beautiful. But is really pleased to hear your take on planning vs not planning. I’ve always had better results from no plan. I really think it’s because when I plan I have a preconceived image in my mind. The more I plan the more detail and specificity I envision which only make reaching the vision that much more unlikely. A found gem is more rewarding, I think. I’m glad you addressed this subject.

Two beautiful images Simon. I do agree that planning can stifle creativity somewhat but only if you are planning to take that one shot you saw in a magazine or online. It’s nice to have that shot but it’s not very creative, unless you can bring something new to the table. This is why I love watching your videos as you are not just looking at the vista in front of you but the hidden gems all around you.

Thanks for a great video. I grew up taking snap shots, and usually no one was any good, just family and holiday stuff. my photographing has been on an of since I bought my first camera at 15 years old back in 1981. Have had some few period up through the years or decades where I have tried to commit to Photographing, but nothing to hang on my or others walls. most of the reason I haven't photographed so much has been school/education, work and family. Changed job for little over a year back, and got some more spare time I wanted to fill with some interesting hobbies. Well, ended up just with one hobby, photographing, and love it. Even though I have been photographing a small bit all back to 1981, I guess I started my journey on the path to photographing back in January, 2020. Taking images almost every day, started following some Landscape Photographers on RU-vid, mostly cause I love being out, along the sea, river, and in the woods and on the mountains. I was lucky, growing up on a farm with easy access to the woods and mountains. my mom loved gardening, mostly flowers, and that interest I have taken with me. That interest is also the reason I found Your channel here on RU-vid. Like it very much, and appreciate all your great tips and trick. Thanks for sharing. As for this video theme, planned or not planned photographing, I see a lot of the RU-vidr I follow advice to plan, make a system, write notes. Check the weather reports, and sun up and down. Well, I know from my own experience that we mostly learn from our own mistake, so some kind of notebook may be handy. And up to some amount, the weather forcast, knowing were the sun rise og decline, the sea level can be ok information. But every images where I have done some degree of planning has failed me in some way. My very few "best" images has been pure luck, mostly thanks to a relaxing approach. No stress, no time schedule, just love, look and listen.

Hi Simon, another great video and one for "the bank". I find your approach to photography very refreshing and inspiring. I've a collection of DVD's from renowned UK landscape photographers, the likes of Joe Cornish, Charlie Waite and David Noton. What inspires me is the fact that you can literally just go out, shoot and get amazing images. The likes of David noton would sacrifice hours/days to get "the image" which don't get me wrong are fantastic but there are 2 of your images which stand out amongst the best I've ever seen. The first is the image which was taken at sunrise and was the shot of the gate ate the end of the track with the soft light hitting the trees on the left of the track. The second was a similar shot of a long track which led to a fog tunnel with young trees lined to the left leading you into the shot. 2 amazing images Simon. You also shot a film where you scouted some ancient oak woodland in the peak District, could you tell me the name of that sii ancient woodland as I would love to visit it. Kind regards.......davey

Hi Simon, I am a new subscriber, although I have watched many of your videos over recent months. I live in a tropical climate, however I am quite envious of the variety of subjects you manage to find, and the softer lighting conditions you experience in your part of the world. On the subject of creativity I think there is a close relationship between satisfaction and luck. I find the element of luck plays plays an important part in both planned and unplanned photography. We always strive to reduce our reliance on luck by planning our shots where we can, however in reality it is the element of luck which keeps us interested and keen to improve our results. I really enjoy your gentle approach to photography and your ability to see what most of us miss, which emphasizes the saying "it's not what you see, it's how you see it". Cheers, Terry.

Yes! It does stifle my creativity. I just went on a photography workshop to a mountain range and I really did not get that high I’m seeking from discovery. The whole group popped out of the van, set up their tripods and took -pretty much the same shot. I love the camaraderie but not being able to roam and discover on my own was really frustrating. We were ‘corralled in’ because of potential bears-which we never saw one. I like the way you wander and explore-that’s my speed.

There are times when an off the cuff shot has turned out better than the ones I'd planned. I take quite a few photos of trail races, snapping runners galore. Alister Benn has been discussing similar thoughts in the past week on his "Expressive Photography" videos here. A Canon EOS 3 and Provia!! Now THAT takes me back, because the 3 was the last analogue camera I owned, and which I still have. It gave way to the Canon D60, and many more since.... More importantly, preparation and creativity. Big picture, I agree with you. I would add that preparation and practice allow us to embrace the unexpected and to be able to respond to creative impulses when they arise. I've been an actor for over 40 years and although photography and acting are not perfectly aligned they are of the same family. We master our technique as best we can, we rehearse so that we feel comfortable and confident with our instrument and our partners....and then we set ourselves free to explore. Maybe we make magic, maybe we don't. Your musings bring to mind a lovely image of yours taken of a subject in a mud puddle on your way back from a hike. You weren't expecting it, but your eye was fierce that day and you captured some magic. Lovely vlog today Simon, keep on musing and keep on shooting.

My main genre is wildlife, so in some ways you know what is likely to be about, but often on my journey I'll see a landscape or something else that begs a shot. Hi Bob thanks for the comment on the film. The grasshopper warbler is found over most parts of the UK, but has a particular liking to open scrub mosaic habitats, so you don't get them literally everywhere. Your disabilities could actually work in your favour, for those who are more mobile often go set themselves too great a distance to cover on an outing and see nothing because they have there mind set on completing the walk in the allotted timeframe.

Lovely peaceful few minutes with you again, Simon. I love the whole planning aspect. I love researching places, finding out what’s there, how to get there, the history of the place. But I find the unexpected moments exhilarating, particularly when wildlife appears or when I see a scene for the first time that takes my breath away. I often find that - particularly when I’m doing landscape work - I will have planned on one thing but find that something else draws my eye, something unexpected or something that isn’t the classic view of a place. So I tend to plan on a general idea when visiting a location, but part of my plan is always to be open to the unexpected marvels that tend to surprise me. Lovely vid. 👍

Fascinating video, Simon. In my work, I find that I live in a most happy place where planning is hyper-important for many shots (all the strange studio and product stuff), while serendipity and whimsy are key at other times when I am just out and about. Clients are often very specific about things, and that's where the left side of my brain has all the fun, planning every last detail. And then there is the nature and landscape stuff (which I mostly do for myself, and not for money), and while there is a lot of thinking that goes into some of that, not as much planning; and the right side of my brain has a field day...so to speak. One of my favorite things, which you clearly share, is that moment when you "discover" a shot that had never occurred to you, until there it was, just sitting there waiting for you to get out your tripod (your rock in the roots comes to mind). I think the rule of thirds should apply here, too: 1/3 planning, 1/3 whimsy, 1/3 caffeine (not necessarily in that order). And, Oh My Goodness, that second shot was just stunning!
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 4 года назад
I agree with just about everything you say Peter. You say it in such a great way and I loved your third analogy, especially the last one! However, I'm not sure the two sides of my brain work independently. I need them both to pull together to stand any chance of anything worthwhile happening!

To be honest, I rarely plan in any great detail, but when I try to work like that and things don't go right for whatever reason, I find I get fed up with it. On the other hand, those chance encounters really stick with me and the photos give me a better feeling when looking back at them, even years later. 😊

@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 4 года назад
Haha...my point exactly Jeff. Still, I think you probably reacted naturally to the new scene and didn't have chance to overthink it. This is why I think these shots are more about the photographers natural instinct. With planned shots, there is too much time to allow other influences in!

I don't generally plan. I mostly don't have the time. I get a window in which I can grab my gear and go shoot, and I take it. My life is too busy. However, I'm not strictly a landscape photographer. I shoot a lot of birds and wildlife, and I generally go hunt them down. I go to places where I know they are, but I can't really plan which ones are going to be there, or the specific place they will end up being. I do know that there are a lot of bird photographers who do this, but I seldom get the opportunity. I also enjoy just going out and looking for whatever I can find, whatever catches my eye. So I might take what I consider nature photography(wooded areas, flowers, trees, insects creeks and rivers, etc). But if I planned every trip out, and had an expectation or understanding of what I would end up with, for me it would suck the life and joy out of photography. But I'm not making a living, and there is no pressure to get "the shot".

I do both. I make a plan but sometimes I see something and let my intuition take over and see where the road takes me. Most times I find something wonderful I hadn't expected. I do plan though. I want to go shoot the forest tomorrow. It should be raining and I want some wet forest images...that's not to say that something else along the way won't take me off course a bit. Love your videos and Willow is gorgeous!

I just plan to go out with my camera, in some ways I'm spoiled as the beach is just a stone throw away and I have a gorge that opens out to the sea at the bottom of the garden with views across to Cape Wrath, great for sunset shots. Trees are a bit further but not too far away there's an old forest walk with ancient woodland standing stones and a collapsed Broch. I do have shots I want to take of ruined castles and sea cliffs but they are on the east coast in some ways Autumn/Winter is the best season for what I have in mind rough seas and stormy clouds so that I needs a bit of planning to get the right weather and its over an hours journey. Lovely shot of the common ragwort.

Another thought provoking and informative video Simon. I find the summer months stifle my photography more than planning; I am an early riser but 03:00 is just too early. For me, over planning leads to disappointment because previsualisation takes hold and reality rarely lives up to what you have built up in your mind. However, going to the east coast and expecting a spectacular sun set is bad planning, so you do need a broad plan and having some knowledge of a totally new place does help get you in a place where things might happen. If things work out, Jane and I will be going to Mull and Skye in September. I have some locations in mind but not to the point of standing at coordinates XYZ at 06:45 and the sun will illuminate these rocks, etc. The thrill of finding something new is more powerful that going through an 'image factory' process. Thanks for sharing.

I never plan anything. I just get what I get. Certainly when I'm out in nature. Is that better than planning? I'd think, perhaps not, but if I come home with no good pictures, I'd be more frustrated if I'd planned than if I hadn’t. On the other hand planning might improve the chances of getting good pictures. But I think I'm effected by only kind of photography I feel I do reasonably well: Candid portraits. Apart from bringing a good, fairly long lens to where there are people, you can’t really plan, I think. You just need a good angle, a good composition, the right fairly long distance to the subject, and of course good light. (And the ability not to call attention to yourself is an important skill). And then it’s a game of waiting a bit, and shooting at the right split second when the beautiful, interesting or meaningful facial expression is there.

A very interesting question Simon and one with no simple answer to my mind. I totally take your general thrust and cannot argue with the overall truth. However, there's always a however, life in general is rarely that binary and I think there is room for the planned shots where you envisage particular sun angles, specific light or weather etc. for a location you have found and plan to try and create the image when those requirements are met. You are creating the image after all by doing that. I have a situation just like that in a local spot I found last week where I'm planning a near sunrise shot when the tide is at the right height, which looks like November. I'm using Photopills to work out the sun along with tide tables so to my mind I'm creating this in advance with the weather at the time being the main variable. It may not work of course but the process is enjoyable in itself which is surely important and why we seek to create images after all. Equally I always have my camera with me when I'm dog walking for instance and take many shots which are driven by mood, weather, tide, things I come across etc. So this is totally creating in the moment with zero preconceived ideas. To my mind if you take either approach exclusively you lose out. However a mix of both styles of working is probably the way to go as well as being achievable for most of us. As for today's images. Delightful. As are the golden nuggets of natural history as it was called when I was at primary school several decades ago!
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 4 года назад
Hi Martin, re your planned example, this is my point. I have done exactly the same and it's great when the vision is realised and everything leading up to that point. But to me, stumbling on a golden nugget on the day when everything aligns is far more exciting because every element of it is new. But yes, I will still continue to consider both approaches.

To me, it's about expectations. "Planning" leads to raised expectations of what a potential image could be. I try to keep those expectations in check. I won't stop planning, at least somewhat, because it's important to know at least some of what a scene has to offer. Still, my best images tend to come from a little planning, but with unplanned conditions and light.
@SimonBoothPhotography
@SimonBoothPhotography 4 года назад
I probably should have said Derek that yes, to have at least some idea where to go is important.
@franzgisinphotography

The opposite extreme of too much planning, no planning whatsoever, is probably not a good idea either. [I accidentally forgot the extra memory card, spare camera battery, polarizer, the ball head for my tripod, proper clothing, etc. back home.] Perhaps somewhere in between these two extremes is optimum. I think there is a big difference between "I would not be a bit surprised if certain conditions will be present at my intended location - for logistical planning purposes", and "I expect/demand my desired conditions present themselves to me on a silver platter as soon as I arrive." Where I get into trouble is not in planning, but in clogging up my mind with too many "unrealistic expectations".
@SimonBoothPhotography

I wouldn't say that planning stifles my creativity, but it can certainly deflate it. I can't tell you how many times I've excitedly pursued a plan for a photo only to be utterly disappointed with the result. It can make the entire "creative" experience feel meaningless. I think it's best to hold your plans in an open hand, free for the winds of change to blow them away and bring something new and unexpected.

I dont think you plan nature photography. Realistically you can say yep those animals/insects/birds have been seen in X location but it all depends on if they are in the right place at the right time and on top of that is that light good. Landscapes I see very little reward in it and I dont get excited by it. It's too slow for me but I get a real sense of reward from photographing nature, certainly insects. Landscapes it's just a case of turning up to a location and if the light is good then you've got what you've come for. It doesn't do it for me. I watch landscape photographers more for the journey rather than the photography as I do enjoy walking in such as the peaks and the lakes. Also Chris sale is a fantastic photographer, been following him for a long while now. If you enjoy the lake district his channel will be a good watch for you :)
