Dull weather, rain, wind - what can I do? Well I decided to head out to the coast and shoot some 6x6 pinhole shots and also walk around with a 1950's folder. Just goes to show that the weather can't stop you making images!

Equipment used:
Zero image 2000 pinhole camera
Voigtlander Perkeo 1
Fomapan 400 in xtol 1:1

Isn't it strange, we always want the things we don't have. In the old days, when those camera were state of the art, fotografers probably would have killed for any digital camera. Today, where nearly every shot is technically perfect, we like the imperfection of those old fashioned cameras. Thank you for the video.

I used to dream about a digital workflow back in the 80’s, being able to sit at a computer and edit then print shots exactly as I wanted them. The reality is quite different and ease of use seems to have robbed us of a lot of the creativity (and fun)!

Thanks for the kind words James, I always get more satisfaction from the bad weather outings. Picking the right equipment is definitely the key, no point shooting high resolution images when it’s chucking it down.

I thought I’d down loaded all your videos, this one slipped through the cracks: Waiting on same pinhole camera from eBay to arrive: I’m leaning more and more towards film these days: Took my horseman 690 out on weekend for the first time: enjoying the slower pace and having to think more: Loved your images, but always do: You are a very good photographer Steve and your feet are on the ground: You inspire people: God bless you mate

Thanks Brian and I’m so glad you are out shooting more film. I’d love a really flexible large rollfilm camera to use on a regular basis, something in the 6x9 or 6x12 size would be great.

Steve O'Nions I brought a horseman 970 with film backs 6x9 and 6x12. It’s a press camera range finder: How anyone ever used it for a press camera is beyond me: It’s not that heavy and easy to use: No need to reply, you have enough to do: All the best

Steve, you've given me an idea, shooting with my pinhole 'Canera,' basically an empty coffee can, fitted with a pinhole, and loaded with 4x5 photo paper, and resurrecting my 6X6 Franka folding camera. I never thought these simple implements were serious photography tools, but your work clearly demonstrates that spectacular results are worthy of the effort. Thanks again!

Steve O'Nions Steve - have you done anything on framing up a pinhole for a shot? It would be a bit of a challenge with the wide angle and getting the horizon level. Love the look you are getting in this and your other videos with the pinhole. Thanks.

I try not to be too exact with Pinhole Ian and enjoy the freedom of guessing the end result. If I need to be more precise I will often use the GoPro to frame with as it has a similar field of view and at the very least ensures the camera is level.

Hi Steve, funny to see you at one of my local haunts. I often go walking and taking photos down the various beaches on the peninsula. I too have a Perkeo - fantastic sharp lens which surprisingly resists flare as good as anything. I don't shoot much film nowadays due to processing costs, but am tempted to try B&W and develop it and scan it myself to keep the cost down. There's something about film that digital just doesn't have, and not having to use batteries and menus frees you up to just take photos. Kind Regards, Phil
@SteveONions

I’d definitely give the Perkeo a run out Phil, B&W is still affordable and easy to develop/scan.

Steve, I’ve recently found and subscribed to this channel. This is one of my favorite shoots so far. Is there a trick to composing with the pinhole. You had so many keepers with it! @SteveONions
@SteveONions 6 лет назад
Hi Christopher. Glad you liked this video, it was a challenging day weather wise and I was also surprised at how many decent images I got! The Nettar you have is very similar and I had one a few years ago, it is surprising just how good those old lenses are especially When stopped down to around f/16. I often set my focus to roughly 15 feet or so and use 1/100 sec@f16 with a 400 speed film and just shoot with that setting all day, the results are usually excellent. Have fun with your Zeiss 🙂

Hi Steve, Happy New Year! Just watching this video in readiness of receiving my first pinhole camera - Ondu 6x9. Very excited! I see you are shooting here with Fomapan 400 - do you recommend this film and speed with pinhole in dreary Blighty? With my film cameras I normally shoot with Kodak TriX, Ilford Ortho Plus 80 and Ilford FP4. Im not sure if I need to think about film differently for pinhole Photography. I don’t want my pinhole images too grainey. ..... Any advice/suggestions gratefully received. 😊📷

Hi Joanna, I hope you like the pinhole camera when it arrives. There are two really good films when it comes to this type of shooting in my opinion. Firstly Fuji Acros as it has no reciprocity failure down to 2 minutes. Secondly Ilford XP2 super which can handle massive amounts of overexposure with ease and gets finer grained too. You can’t go wrong with either of these 👍

I've never seen a pinhole camera. Sounded like it is fixed aperture around F132? Is the roll film readily available? I couldn't tell how you aimed it or if there is any focus adjustment. That is pretty fascinating to me.
@SteveONions
@SteveONions 6 лет назад
It really is just a small teak box Philip and composition is guesswork which I like as you are never certain what you will get. It takes standard 120 roll film and is fixed at f/138. Everything from about 6 inches to infinity is in focus.
@MegaSumo67
@MegaSumo67 4 года назад
i have a pinhole. im wondering when you add reciprocity?? i have been taking the measurement with light meter. add reciproicty to it then with dial that came with camera i go to say 185 and it gives me a time for exposure..or should i add it after the final number the dial gives me...i have a zero image also so i think same as you
@SteveONions
@SteveONions 4 года назад
Always add it at the end Norman. For example, if you get a reading of 5 seconds from the dial you then work out the additional exposure based on that. Typically I’d double it for that speed on older films but not the likes of Tmax which doesn’t suffer much reciprocity failure.

Hi Steve, i've just got a Perkeo 1with the Vaskar f4,5 75mm lens, won it on ebay £32 looks a great little camera, ? is it any good with colour film? there was a roll of fujicolor superia X-Tra 400 in the camera on about frame 10 i wasted the last two frames not knowing it was in there, not tried to develop it, so haven't a clue what is on it or how it looks! Anyway i've ordered a 5 pack of KodaK Ektar 100 on amarzon, came today! and also some B & W Fomapan 200 ,400 from a diff site, not here yet, have you shot colour film in this cam and had good results? do you have to shoot it at the box speed or adjust settings to allow for colour/focusing? I think i read somewhere, that the Perkeo 3 has a colour lens for shooting colour film? Cheers Paul.
@SteveONions
@SteveONions 3 года назад
Hi Paul. The 3 element Vaskar lens in your camera is fine for shooting colour film although contrast and saturation will be a little lower than something like a Tessar design. I’d rate you film at half the box speed and just go out and shoot - it will come out fine 😊
