Mark galer is awesome. Great teacher with fresh insights not not only sony shooters but everybody. A lot of experts state that using 16x9 crop would crop the image because they state the sensor is not fully used. Good to know that is not true. What a fantastic way you explain everything that I feel like you can read peoples mind as you are talking, you know what the audience is thinking as you are explaining things and you are answering our question that came to our mind while listening your detail nice, amazing way of explanation and you keep answering our question, I don't know if I managed to explain myself as English is not my first language and I don't have a good communication skill. I shoot uncompressed for landscape and compressed for action/sports - it really only makes a difference when shooting into the light and you try to lighten the underexposed shadows by more than 3 EV or stops.

Excellent informative and helpful video! I believe Canon SLRs have an auto DOF feature (one focuses on the nearest and furthest point in your composition and the camera computes optimal focal setting and aperture). Why don't other cameras have that handy feature?
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 5 месяцев назад
I have asked Sony for this feature - I would like to see the cameras become more 'user-friendly' so I can stop writing 600-page eBooks for the Alpha cameras.
@MikeNelsonPedde
@MikeNelsonPedde Год назад
Ansel Adams used what is now known as the "1/x rule", which meant that - for him - he found that he could adequately handhold a camera at a shutter speed that was the inverse of the focal length of the lens. I don't think he ever intended it to become a rule, and he was shooting film. Camera shake - what's visible - depends on the sensor size, number of megapixels, focal length, and perhaps more importantly, the way the photographer holds the camera and clicks the shutter. Camera shake on a cell phone image is much less visible than on a Phase One IQ150 or a Sony a7RV. If one holds that camera out in front (like a baby with a dirty diaper) and composes through the screen on the back of the camera, stability is much less than holding the camera tight and looking through the viewfinder. For me, I have what is medically known as a fine motor tremor. To that end, when I'm not using a tripod I will tend to use a monopod instead. I can set up my monopod much more quickly than a a tripod and it gives me more stability than handheld shooting.

Mark! I'm impressed with your guide! Just one question, do you recomend using ISO 50 in any situation? Advantages?
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 2 года назад
It’s useful when working with f/1.4 lenses on a sunny day and a camera’s fastest shutter speed is 1/4000 second. The optimum ISO for dynamic range is ISO 100 and not 50.

Hi Mark - Hyperfocal Distance @40 minutes. noticed the Max Print Dimension @f11 is 27" for 14mm & 16mm and 20" for 20mm. Also, noticed @ f16, the print dimension changed to 25" for all focal lengths. I understand the concept behind increasing the print size. Just curious why the print dimensions are different at various focal lengths and f-stops so I can apply the same concept to some other focal lengths. Thanks. BTW - 2nd time watching this video .. so much info to remember to use. Regards
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 2 года назад
I am not sure I can remember why I increased the print dimensions for this slide. The important thing to take from this part of the seminar is that Depth of Filed calculators can provide different information (and a different hyperfocal distance) if you increase the size of the print or increase the visual acuity of the viewer.

Hello Mark I hope I have the right video of yours but did I hear you say that for the a7r4 the best ISO for the most dynamic range is 320 and if so how much are we losing shooting at ISO 100 for landscape pictures. Thanks Dave
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 2 года назад
Sony sensors are often described as dual-gain sensors. They have an optimum ISO setting and then dynamic range starts decreasing and noise starts increasing as the ISO is pushed higher. The optimum ISO for the A7RIV is 100. Most of the other sensors that Sony make have a second sweet spot at ISO 640 where dynamic range and noise is better at 640 than 500. The line on the testing charts spikes at this point and this signifies the optimum second ISO of the dual gain sensor. The A7RIV spikes at ISO 320 and this may offer better performance than ISO 250 but not as good as ISO 100.

Longer focal lengths benefit from lens stabilisation as well as IBIS at slower shutter speeds. That’s why some of the Tamron telephoto lenses have cut one too many corners (in my opinion)

The length of these Masterclass videos are not for people with a passing interest or with short attentions spans. Fortunately for RU-vidr's they can set the playable speed to 1.5x or pause me while they take a break. This was never an option for the undergraduates I used to teach.

@@AlphaCreativeSkills Hi Mark, Upon re-reading my comment I realize that it could have been wrongfully interpreted as insinuating that your videos are boring. I didn’t mean this at all!! I thoroughly enjoy your videos and find them highly educational. Your students were very lucky; your videos are my number one go-to resource for improving my photography skills and I have implemented your PAL workflow on my A7M3. I have found it very helpful. At the 14:40 mark in your video, you were saying how anyone who hasn’t had 5 or 6 cups of coffee would be able to take handheld landscape shots at a slow shutter speed. I was just making a self-deprecating joke about drinking way too much coffee as I enjoyed your masterclass. :) Keep up the great work! Cheers, Jeff.
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 2 года назад
I gave you the benefit of the doubt and I am aware my Masterclass videos are much longer that the typical videos you find on RU-vid. I am surprised I made a joke in the video - this is something I usually only do in front of a live audience! I used to be an Adobe Ambassador some years ago and they asked me to reduce the length of my video tutorials to 3-minutes. A year later they said I would need to reduce the length of my videos to 1-minute. I responded by making them a 90-minute Lightroom Masterclass to demonstrate that some photographers want more than just sound bites. It has proved to be a very popular masterclass. Needless to say I no longer choose to work as an Ambassador for Adobe.

@@AlphaCreativeSkills haha! That is amazing! Short clips are great to grab the attention of those who are passing by, but a masterclass can’t be done in a few minutes. Your channel mixes it up well. This video is over a year old and was recorded in a single session. I sometimes use slides from a previous video but never older video clips. Putting together a free 2-hour presentation is a monumental effort, so sometimes if I can cut a few corners and reuse a slide from a previous presentation that could have been talking about a camera setting I take it. I would prefer it if you add constructive criticism rather than non-constructive criticism Gabriel or just unsubscribe.
