Nice explanation! I always find it humorous when Thomas Heaton talks through his shot and almost always says, "focus 1/3 in..." and his shots are just incredibly sharp. Have a great day!
Thanks Charles, I've actually put a free to use toolkit on my website including a DoF and focus distance calculator. I'm going to run through it in a few videos but I'm hoping that it will be really helpful for folks out in the field.
You must have been gutted when you got back and didn't have your audio! I haven't done it yet, but I'm sure I will at some point. Another technical subject explained really well. Now you have to do the circle of confusion! 😁
haha yeah, that was the vid I was up on millstone edge. I did the intro and first part over there and had the audio. When I wandered across to mother cap to get into the 'bones' of the vid, I switched off the mic and forgot to turn it back on....idiot! Yeah you're right, I probs got to do the CoC one now. Argghh a maths lesson, thanks for swerving past that to a more artist friendly version. Thanks also for including APSC settings again too, I just need to get the Nikon back out and try getting some landscape images with it.
Thanks mate, yeah I didn't really think the maths was necessary but you know what YT is like, if I didn't cover it, some know it all would be in the comments saying 'just learn the hyperfocal distance'. I felt I needed to show it to get the credibility I needed to move on to the less joy sucking method....looking at the analytics though it probably killed the video haha the irony!
ooooh, I so nearly glazed over when I started seeing formulas appear on screen, you rescued that very nicely though 😁 definitely something that i’ve found difficult when I was starting out, and I could probably say I’ve still not completely mastered. Cheers Martin. I'll be honest, whether to put the maths in was something I wrestled with. For the point that I wanted to make it wasn't necessary....but....it's a RU-vid problem. There's hundreds of YT photographers out there who constantly talk about hyperfocal distance, far bigger channels than this one, many of whom have no idea how hyperfocal distance actually works. So folks see these channels and believe that it is the only way. Then I come along and do a video which show the double distance method and I get loads of comments telling me that 'if this works why does such and such say different', or 'learn hyperfocal distance mate, that way you'll get it right!', honestly the amount of uninformed comments I get like that on vids! So I've come to realise that the only way I can get around it is to show a working knowledge of the thing I want to say is irrelevant, which removes the mystique and (I hope) buys me some credibility. Leaving me free to dismiss it and go onto the (as someone else put it) 'artist friendly method'! I promise, I will never do a vid where you have to do maths or get a measuring tape out in the field haha
@@LetsClickPhotography 🤣🤣🤣 so I can take the 5m tape measure out of my bag then! I get it with the comments and fighting the YT algorithm, apart from time it’s another reason I’ve not given any thought to starting my own channel. Oh, and not having a clue about doing vids etc. that might also be a reason 😁
Another nice 3 a.m. surprise having a notification of another Dave Laffan video. To be honest, the maths part at the beginning lost me at 3 a.m. but that was followed up by a very easy to digest explanation that even the bleary-eyed could easily understand . I was commenting on a couple other videos how nice the heather looks this year and the same goes for your location, especially the images at 10:18 and 10:36. I over the woodland image at 10:33 as well. Great work as always mate, really helpful and easy to follow information. Have a great weekend over there mate, chat soon!
In the past I haven't really seen the heather at its peak. So this year is definitely looking good to my eyes. Because it blooms and peaks in August, a month that I tend not to have much time to head out (and avoid the national parks due to the tourist swamping!) what with weddings, family shoots and my own family on summer hols. But I planned three days into my month this year after I realised that I didn't have a decent heather shot in my PD portfolio. Managed a few decent shots that will come up in future vids. Yeah I wrestled with whether to keep the maths in, will probably turn a few peeps off and kill the vid, time will tell..haha probably not the best at 3am....trying to figure out the maths at 7am was problem enough 🤯
I completely agree with you about the maths sucking the joy out of photography , really well explained and even better simplification to achieve the same result . Really well thought out and put together , helpful video, well done mate. Like the images at the end as well especially the woodland scene 10:36 and the heather at 10:40 Hope your well all the best mate
Thank you Lee. Yeah, I'm really aware at the moment that I'm doing a lot of technical 'joyless' type vids, so trying to find easier ways that are far less daunting is definitely what I'm aiming for. Hey Joel, no it isn't. The nodal point sits within your lens, sometimes more than one point depending on type of lens. It tends to sit near to the front of the lens, again though this can differ dependant on lens. Good question thanks for asking...I've just added nodal points onto my topic list for a future vid
