Landscape Photography at Roydon Common - Beautiful Heather and a Faulty Sony A73!!

Welcome to this week's vlog in which I travel the furthest I've been since before lockdown to photograph the lone trees amidst the blooming heather at Roydon Common in North Norfolk. The location was fantastic but, unfortunately, my camera was not so as I finally discovered that the issues I was having with it were not down to lenses and adapters but a faulty shutter mechanism...
I hope that you enjoy the vlog!

Hi Gary, a fantastic video mate! Amazing how the heather popped up. I love your result at ~12:50 - the tree back there is just awesome. Have a great day, Christian

Enjoyable watch Gary, great B Roll as usual, good results with all the lone tree shots - particularly the first and third ones, and some nice banter with Darren to finish the vlog. Hopefully by the next one you'll have a replacement camera that you are 100% happy with 👍

I’d of struggled to get away from that tree. Gutted for you with the camera issues!! I hope your sorted and with the camera that works proper soon. Both areas of trees, you worked very well! I prefer the second tree. Stunning! Stand out B roll with touches of pastel muted tones. I would just like to add, when you’re both moaning about being Darn sarth I’ll remind you of this vlog. 😂😂😂👍

I think it's more the producers of the pats that Darren was worried about ;-)

Watching this made me do a test on my own A7iii. Shot the neighbours chimney stack 5 shots at 200mm and all pin sharp. Don't let a bad batch put you off the camera.

I'm really pleased that you're not having the issues that I had. The first thing I'll be doing when my new camera arrives is making sure that it doesn't have that fault :-)
@iainmc9859
@iainmc9859 4 года назад
You have my sympathy with the camera. I've not found anything online about focus problems, so I guess its down to an individual fault. Don't dump the glass yet, a second one should be fine. Having said that I've decided to get a Sony A7rii as I don't need the improved video and speed of eye focus of the A7riii. Saves a shed load as well. I still like the shots you showed (except of the chimney). I'm envious of the wonderful heather, ours isn't really out yet. Skin So Soft...good for repelling midges and attracting strange men on the common!

That first lone tree is a slow grower, barely changed in 15 years by the look of it, i first photographed that on my canon 350d way back in the day. Shame about the camera fault, bloody annoying when our gear fouls up like that. Last time i was on the common i got assaulted and harassed by the local horse gang, their scary buggers when they come over with their eyes all madly wild and waving their silly big heads around. One thuggish pony even head butted me, gave me a side swipe, nearly knocked me off my feet lol Good to see Darren pop up, recently started watching his videos, seems a nice bloke but he landed you right in it, i am sure you will get the sod back =) a note on the birds of the common, Kestrels are obvious, but Red Kites also frequent this area, as do Buzzards, Hen Harriers and lots of Herons, just so much wildlife to see, including slow worms, common lizards, adders and grass snakes, it is literally a wildlife haven around there! ps, why the white borders around your images? Personal preference but i dislike them immensely, their distracting and unnecessary, but each to their own,
@GaryNormanPhoto
@GaryNormanPhoto 4 года назад
I'm glad that you've started to watch Darren, he's a top bloke with an excellent channel, I'd also recommend Janie Overland too (if you're not already watching him) I think that Roydon is definitely worth a visit with my 150-600 for a bit of wildlife (and also something to fend off the horses!) As for the borders, I do get your point but I like the way they put a frame around te images and give them an end point... Like you sid though it's very much personal taste :-)

Hope your camera issues are resolved soon, I went to Roydon Common yesterday (24/8/20) afternoon had a good time snapping as I do, as you say plenty of wildlife about, butterflies, dragonflies, grasshoppers etc etc, the silver birch on the way in from the car park need more investigation, there are more of them if you come in from the playing field/ play area in Roydon and follow the old rail track. Take care

That looks like a great location and you got some good results from it despite the camera woes, which I hope you get sorted soon. I have used lots of Sigma kit for my Nikons over the years and often wondered how they got access to the camera data to be able to manufacture their third party lenses, was it by reverse enginnering or by co-operation with Nikon? Having cheaper lenses might sell bodies for them. Look forward to more vlogs with whatever kit you adopt, you still have your photographer's eye.

Nope.. 1st shot the heather was the star, the tree was in the background as support ! Lovely soft (and I don't mean as in not sharp) feel to the 2nd image, I thought it was great... but as you was doing your bit to camera there was a small batch of fern over your right shoulder - I was thinking that would make a nice addtion to the heather too... I am typing as I watch so hopefully you will get some in a future image (?) Nice image that 3rd one but the 2nd was the one for me. We have spoken about the camera issue as you know so let's just wherever we both end up in the future as far as gear it works out better. atb Alan

Hi Gary, I've had my A7iii for just over a week and because I got a great trade-in deal from Wex I found I was able to afford a native Sony lens, so I got the 24-70 2.8. I also bought the MC-11 converter and attached my Canon 50mm 1.4 and did not get on with it at all. I'm most likely going to park the MC-11 and my Canon glass and am going to concentrate on using my 1 Sony lens.

In times past I’ve let a poor buying experience sour my enjoyment of an expensive item. I paid dearly to go into the Nikon z system right before the world, my career and my income ground to a halt. It seems things are staring up again, but for months I couldn’t look at the kit without beating myself up for being so irresponsible. With some light at the end of the tunnel I’m now finding some of the enjoyment I was expecting eight months ago. With a bit of effort and a replacement body, you’ll find it too. In spite of our photo kit setbacks, I’d say were pretty darn fortunate for infinite other reasons.

Sorry to hear about the new camera. You may have already been aware of this but was the sensor stabilisation switched on when you had it set to auto bracketing? I can envisage that if it was enabled then when the mechanical shutter fired for the first exposure it would set off a small vibration which the stabiliser would detect and then try to correct for it as the subsequent images were being shot, so the sensor would be actually moving at the time of exposure resulting in a bluured image, this would not happen on the electronic shutter as nothing moves, just a thought.
@GaryNormanPhoto
@GaryNormanPhoto 4 года назад
That's a good point Peter, but I did check with stabilisation switched on and off and also with auto and manual focus... Unfortunately the issue was there throughout :-(

You might not be happy with your images but at least your skin is lovely and soft, by the end of the vlog you looked an hour and forty five younger. I'm a Canon user and I'm in the upgrade predicament. Do I change to the R system that seems to have much better lenses than anyone else or do I switch to Sony and save myself a shed load of cash? Still I did say I'd wait until next year to upgrade so plenty of time for Canon to introduce trade in offers 🤞

It's definitely a one-off unit related issue... To be honest the images weren't too bad in terms of blur but I did have to put them through the wringer in terms of processing as they were the least exposed of the bracketed images (hence no blur) but needed heavy (too heavy perhaps) processing to bring them up to scratch...
